Tlio Iron Trade.
Philadelphia Press.
Wo linvo again to report n week < ;
dojjresrion ns regards prices , nlthou
the volume of business npnenrs to ii :
crenso rnthor than othcrwiso. Tlio pi
sition is oiii ' to
nn 'mn everyone , j
demand of nn almost nnproccdentci
proportions , prices down to or bolov
cost , yet the market is gradual !
weakening. No sntiafncti ry explain
tion can bo given for such a state (
ull'nii-H. The usual answer is thai
prices will improve , or must improve
nut they _ don't. Without protemliii
to explain something which others fate
to explain , wo cannot nvoid the in
pression that the weakness is Inrgel
duo to foreign coinputition. A toti
importation of upwaid of 250,000 tor
during the lii-st four months of th
year , largo quantities afloat , and ncgc
tiutions for still heauier lota pending
nro facts which fiirniah food for son'
ous reflection. Then n ain , the col
dition of the English iron trndo i
growing worse , stocks increasing , coi
sumption decreasing , and Continenti :
mnrkots closing their doors to Britis !
products. It should not bo n surpris
under such circumstances to find Eug
lisli iron-mnsters unloading here
Prices obtained certainly seem Jov
and it is declared that transnctioi
have been nt a heavy loss to sellorw
but it seems quite likely that stil
greater loss w uld bo incurred b ;
holding. In the absence of nny bottu
theory wo conclude that our mnrko
is over-weighted by Orent Britain , an
unless Homo other outlet can ho foun
the United States will linvo tolnketh
mirpltiH ut Bomo jirico. It may do vor
well to decry the miality of foreig
iron , but the fnct in beyond question
that for months post the heaviest con
HUiners have bought their live then
sand ton lots abroad , nnd the&o. an
the trnnsuctions that influence values ,
It is said , by way of explanation , thn
our Ameriean funiacoa cannot funiis"
the quantities desired , which would hi
entirely true if supplemented hy tin
words ut the price It would not hi
fair to attach all the blame to buyer
of foreign iron. The cheapest inarke
to buy in , and the dearest to sell in i ;
a maxim observed the world over ,
Furnace men frequently express thci
willingness to sell at prices to mee.
foreign competition after the orders
have boon placed. But it ia reason
ably , certain that if those same buyers
had naked for bids for such quanti
ties aa they required , and liavi
actually purchased , prices would hay
been run up'wo hesitate to say hoi
many dollars per ton. Labor , alrcad
unsettled and disiatiftfiod , would have
demanded an advance , or pcrlmp
gone out on strike. It is , therefore ,
in ono sense true that American
furnaces cannot furnish nil the iron
for which there is n consumptive do-
liquid. What proportion they will
furnish depends entirely ujwii the
diflorenco in prices. It is not un
likely that wo nro nlrcnd nt the price ,
working up to full capacity. A
heavier demand would increase cast ,
nnd n falling oil'may bo necessary to
so fur reduce it , thnt our iron-masters
may bo again placed in n position to
meet foreign competition. The Inbor
market in this great country is exceed
ingly sensitive , and with an nlnind-
anco of remunerative employment ,
such as now oxisla , it is impossible to
produce iron nt lower rales than nro
now current. An alternative ( which
wo regret to say seems very improb
able ) is that the equilibrium may bo
restored by a stin'eningupin England ,
owing to an improved demand , to
dtich United Stntes buyers nro nl-
eady contributing thoirquotn. Tina ,
lowovor , is merely n suggestion which
hose in the trndo will bo nblo to
itimnle nt its value. Snlcs of Amcri-
inn iron during the week have been
'onfmod to very small lots , and with-
nit appreciable change in prices ,
/or largo lots sellers would bo quite
ullitig to ncoept business nt inside
lUotatioiiH , say No. 1 foundry , SIM
.o S'Jo ; No. 2 foundry , 3i2 ! ; gray
'orgo , Si-'O to $22. Poroigu boa sold
urgely nt 8-iI.r > 0 to S''U for Hessomor ,
, nd 817.25 to $18 for Middlesboro ;
Scotch iron in nominal at S21 to $2t ! ,
icconlinu to brand ; the entire market
H unsettled ns regards prices , but con-
inuption is heavy.
Nothing whatever has transpired
[ luring the week to change the course
of the market as indicated in our last
report. There is ample employment
' .n all branches , nnd so far ns wo can
learn every mill in the vicinity run-
jiiug full time. The old complaint in
regard to prices remains , but there is
n growing impression thnt nftor mid
summer there will bon general stillen-
"ng up. No ono seems to expect high
jH-TceH , but it is hoped and believed
thnt nominal rates will bo the active
selling rates , which has not been the
ease for ninny weeks past. In fact ,
the market has been entirely adrift ,
Bonie parties have sold their product
from time at a fnir average of prices ,
others have been n good denl lower ,
nnd still others have been crowded out
nt rates a good deal beyond current
quotations. This is duo in some meas
ure to the diiloronccs in quality , nnd
these having the best reputation nro
the fullest of work at the highest
prices. Others have been uneasy for
fonr that work would run Hhort , nnd
for that reason have lowered their
prices in order to secure certain con
tracts , nnd having cut rates in ono
case have found it difficult to advance
them to others. This refers chiefly to
plato manufacturers. Tank iron , for
instance , having boon sold during the
past thirty days nt figures varying
from 2.55 to 2.85 nt mill. At the mo
ment prices are steadier , nearly nl
the mills being supplied with work
nro quoting at 2.7 to 2.8 , and not in
clincd to make concessions. Merchan
bar is in fnir demand and stcndy n
2.35 to 2.4 for refined iron. No larg
orders linvo been on the mnrkot fo
sonio time pnst , nnd there is n diaposi
tion on both sides to wait for develop
incuts , and in the meantime deal fron
hand to mouth. This clnss of busines
keeps manufacturers steadily nt work
although the mills cannot bo run ns
profitably ns on largo contrncts
Shaped iron is in fair demand , and
witli contracts already engaged , mnnu
facturora nro in n fairly easy position
Such orders as come in are taken n
about 2. ( ! for angles , 3 for tees , 3.3
for beams and 3.4 for channels. Thii
shoots are in active demand , but prices
incline toward weakness. Mnnufac
hirers are crowned with work and are
very much pressed to meet deliveries
Prices vary from 3.75 to 4.25 , accord
ing to gauge.
