A TRIP AFTER TREASURE-
Cnpi. Hillmnn , of Philadelphia , the
Prime Mover in n Peculiar
Enterprise.
-
PiiiLAnr.Lriii.v , .Iniio 4. Tlicro is
now lying at the foot of Pnlmor street ,
Kensington , n neat looking vessel that
will in u few tlrt's sail for the coast of
South America in an expedition to re
cover .1,000,000 Spanish dollars sunk
with a Spanish man-of-war at the com
mencement of the present century.
The vessel WAS built by llenj. Hillman ,
at Cooper's Point , Ciimdu.ii . , nnd after
ising latinched was towed to Ivoiisiny-
nil , where she was supplied \Vith her
nginu. She is constructed of wood ,
g 127 feet in length , 26 feet beam ,
1 foot 4 inches dept of hold nnd is of
85 tons burden. Her cabins
re handsomely tilted np with
ulunt and white cut woods , and she
s supplied with all the requisite appa-
atus and machinery necessary for an
ixpedition of this character , llor own-
r , who JH ulono interested in the en-
erpriso , is Cajit. Charles A. Jones , a
lativo of Philadelphia , who has for
ho past fifteen years been engaged in
ho wrecking business along the coast
f South America. The vessel , to-
; ether with her outfit , cost $7f,000.
, nd she is now loaded with coal and
iw : on board stitlicicnt provisions for n
Dyago of two months , it being calcti
ntcd that tlio run between Philadel
phia and Munte\idoo will occupy but
wenty-live daj's. She will nail either
n Sunday afternoon or Monday morn-
ng for the latter place. Her engines
ire very powerful , and at thu trial trip ,
tvhich was made about ten days ago ,
obtained an average speed of lif-
'een and a half miles tin hour. Her
srow will consist of twenty men , all of
ivhom have been engaged in the wreck-
ng business , including the chief engi-
leer , Chas. .1. Marsh , of. Now York
ity , who has had an experience of
seventeen years with the Coast Wreck
er Company of Now York.
In conversation with Capt. Jones ,
the commander of the expedition , this
: norning , ha stated that this was not
the first enterprise of this character
that ho had been connected with.
"For a long number of years , " ho said ,
" 1 have been working along the South
American coast and have boon engaged
in raising sunken vessels with very
successful results. The Spanish man-
of-war , the treasure of which wo ex
pect to recover , and which amounts to
ixbout ! ) ,000,000 Spanish dollars and
jewels , about the year 1800 struck n
reef near Montevideo , at the mouth of
the Hiodo hi Plata , and sunk. In my
trips along this coast , 1 have been ena
bled to locate near where the sunken
vessel lies , and find that she is covered
with mud to a depth of about 20 feet ,
and with about the same depth of wa
ter. This mud has accumulated on
the wreck , having flowed from the
Kio do la Platta. "
"Yes , when 1 sail from hero I will
proceed direct to Uraguay , where 1
will engage in the wrecking business ;
until the final arrangements of the ex
pedition are completed. Then 1 wil
engage native divers to assist my crov
in the work of recovering the sunkci
treasures. "
"How will I remove the accumula
tion of mud from the wreck 1 Well
my vessel is supplied with not only :
powerful engine , but also several pow
erful pumps , and when they are set ii
action the work can bo very speedily
performed. It will , in all probability ,
bo several months after wo reach' 0111
destination before wo will commence
active operations relative to recover
ing the specie. Additional machinery
will have to bo obtained and otliei
matters arranged , HO as to proceed
properly in the matter. ] have been
very careful to select none but men ol
experience in the wrecking business
for my crew , all of whom will profit
by the expedition if it uhotild prove
successful. In addition to the wreck
ing apparatus composing the cargo.thc
vessel is supplied with two portable
buoyers and anchors to hold the vessel
in position , chains , and all the othci
requisite appurtenances necessary foi
the undertaking. Her engines are ol
compound typo , having high-pressure
cylinders L'O inches in diameter and
low-pressure 151 inches in diameter ,
witli 20-inch titroko. Her boilers are
8 feet ! ) inches in diameter and M feel
in length.

A few week ago Dr. Smith and Dr. .
S. P. Larnior leased u track of land 01
Mr. Alexander Grcumyoll , It lies neai
Groemvul ! ford , and directly on Gram'
river , and the soil is as rich us any ji
America. The tjuantity of grounc
leased was indefinite * , meaning thereby
an much an the parties desire to nso ,
A nil thin is what composes and com
prises the "Onion Fields , " not only ol
Gentry county but of Missouri.
Of this ground thirteen acres have
been planted in onions , Just imagine
a thirteen aero onion patch. And yel
the work of planting was commenced i
little over two weeks ago. Since then
eight or nine men nnd six teams have
been steadily employed. The cost ol
the seed alone was § 227.f'O ; the coal
of putting in the crop will reach 8100 ;
two men and a boy or two will tend it ,
and then will como the work of gath
ering and getting it into market. The
entire cost of farming that thirteen
acres of land \vill bo between $000 and
$700.
That looks like a big outlay of mon
ey on so small n space of ground ,
and yet with anything like a growing
suuBjii the profits will bo on a com *
poiidinuly largo scale. Onions arc ul.
ways n staple ; always command a good
price. The yield in other places when
similar experiments have been tried
on a large scale has been from -ICO t <
( iOO bushels per acre ; and the onioi :
fields of Smith and Lanneir are in m
productive soil as can be found in the
world. Seasonable wetathur alone if
needed to make the crop ,
The work of planting has been thor
oughly performed. First a stalk-cut
ter clears the ground of the corn-stalk *
of the previous year , and they are
burned. Then follows another team
with u plow breaking deep. Aftoi
this comes , another team with n kind
of a drag or roller ; then another with
a heavy harrow ; and still another witli
a heavy rake. JJy the time these him
all passed over the ground the soil it
loose und mellow aa an ash pile. Then
the planting is done with u couple ol
Comstock seed-Bowers , u piece of ma
chinery that distribute the eueds witli
the utmost accuracy. The rows an
placed exactly twelve inches apart.nnd
four pounds of need put in tothoncro.
Everything is cAfried out with mnthe-
matical certainty.
Three months more and the result
of this experiment will bo determined.
"Tlio Pnrlor-Cnr for Cattle. "
A Now York paper , commenting On
the first trip of an improved car for
transporting cattle says : "It arrived
witl twenty head of cattle fn-iu Cin
cinnati , having como through without
unloading. The cattle were- watered
and fed by A mechanical cmitrivAiicei
operated from the end of the car.
With AH ordinary car the cattle would
have t" bo unloaded for feeilmi ; throe
times , with considerable injury and
delay. The superiority of ( ho now
car was shown not only in its mrroasenl
capacity and the superior o.nifnrl of
the animals , but rdse ) in tlio saving in
weight by diminished loss , \\hich is
usually about 10 per cent , \\tih the
improved car the loss was Miuh-r three
per cent. " This report is encouraging
in every respect. It prost-ntM the
money side of the questuui. Th0
scheme of transporting live stock in
cars fitted np with convciiioiu-es for
feeding , watering und resting was the
oll'spring of sentimentalists. Hut to
make it a practical success it must bo
hewn to be economical to the Hhip-
ior. Tlio comfort of animals during
ransporlation by rail will bo sought
> y business men when it is fount ! to
> o profitable , and they will not bo
: t great trouble or expense t. > ne > euro
't till they are asstireel that it will add
.o their gains. When it is demon
strated that the change will pay , the
nest cruel shippers will prefer thu
parlor" to the box car , und will
gladly pay the increased rates for
r.vnsportation. Sleeping e-ars are
low patronized from motives of econ-
iiny. A traveller finds that ho is a
joiner by paying for A bed that on-
nblcs him to rest ami sloop while ho
s riding , as ho is enabled thereby to
transact his business better the next
.lay. A day's time is cheap to a busi-
less man when purchased at the cost
of n elollar or two. Shippers will pre
fer the "palace stock car" as travellers
.lo the sleeping car when the former
can bo shown to bo economical. The
olficors of humane societies would do
ivell to push their investigations to
ward determining the money value of
thu improved carjto the owners and
shippers of cattlo. ] f they can dcm-
onstrato that it is economical it will
succeed. It will ho well to compare
the conditions of the llesh of cattle
transportcel in these cars of dilleront
patterns , and to test its keeping quali
ties.
WHO WILL OlTO.sn THU CAIi !
Not the railroads , as they have w
direct interest in the matter. They
will make the sanio amount of money
in hauling one kinel of car as another.
With little doubt , they would prefer n
cur that can puss from < no end of tin
line to another if occasion requires ,
without stopping. The palace cai
could do this , -as no time would bo re
quired for feeding and watering stock-
as in the case under the present or
raiigement. Butchers would not op
pose il , as they desire to get the ani
mals they arc to slaughter in the bus
condition , ami the more intelligent u
them know that the more cfiro'fully an
imols are handled the bettor the men
will be for immediate consumption o
for keeping. Packers will not obj'ec
to it for tlio reasons already given
Neither will persons who purcJiaselivc
stock for reshipment , for they wish t
recuivo the animals they pay for in ;
condition that will enable them t <
stanel the fatigno of a long voyage o
journey with as little loss as possible
Of course the producers and consumer
of meat will not object to it. Tin
objection will como from a class o
shippers who profit by dishonorable ai
well as cruel practices in handlini
stock. They are willing to torture cat
tie , sheep and hogs by hunger am
thirst , and to increase the latter bi
the use of salt , that they may maki
the animal eat and drink more whei
they have arrived at the end of thoi
journey. It is profitable to sell water
hay , bran , and shorls , or oven corn a
the price live meat brings inanensteri
market. For years they have maeli
money in this sort of tralJic , and the ;
desire ( o continue it. Those men havi
opposed all improvements in the trans
portation of stock that had for thoi
object the comfort of the animals
They opposed the introduction of tin
aeljustabletrough , that allowed animal
to got a supply of water at any statioi
at which the train might stop , am
threatened to withdraw their patron
from such railroads us adopted it fron
motives other than necessity. It wa
to put a stop to the cruelty inflicted b ;
this class of persons that it was pro
posed to make compulsory laws in re
lalion to fllock-cars.
