POSTOPPICE CHANGES.
Fifteen Hundred Dollars Being
Expended Entire Redistricting -
tricting of the City for
the Carriers.
For two or three days carpenters
have been very busy in the postoflice
making some needed improvements
that have been for some time contum
plated. During Postmaster Hall's ub
sence in AVaihington in March he sue
cceded in obtaining an appropriatioi
of $1,500 and the acceptance of cer
tain plans for the improvement of th
working department of the ofiice. Ii
the room heretofore used for mailin0
purposes , two new desks are being con
strucled for the night registry lettc
clerks. In the day ofiice , a long desk
is being constructed , which will be
both serviceable and ornamental. Ai
iron fence will separate the depart
ments , allowing a passage between.
The ladies' general delivery , whicl
has occupied a part of the mailing
room , is moved toward Dodge street
and the gents' generaldclivcry1siiove | (
toward Douglas street , thus bringing
each window toward the center am
slightly contracting thcyale IKJX space
The room that will be afforded on tin.
Dodge street .side will be utilized fo
the Sunday delivery. Each carrier wil
have a window and the rush onSuuda ;
noon will bo greatly -avoided. As i
has Ix-'cn , thu inconvenience of obtain
ing mail on Sunday has been verj
-eat , and this improvement will In ,
highly appreciated.
Inside the ofiice a number of im
provements are to be made. The car
riers' distsibuting desk will be put
against'lhe north wall anil then more
desks provided , which will give
the carriers nearly four times
as much desk room as before.
There is also a new letter distributing
desk , stamping table and desk for the
superintendent of the carriers , which
will be in place by to-morrow. These
new de-sks are all of the finest work
manship and constructed solidly of
black walnut.
llut doubtless the most important
change in the office , and one which
will interest business men the most , is
an increase in camel's ' and an entire
redistricting of the city. Two new
carriers were appointed this week ,
lamed Molir and Henning. There
are now nine , and a substitute will
probably be appointed in a few days.
The routes of the men have been
carefully changed , to serve the best
interests of the public. AVhen every
thing is in smooth working order
Postmaster Hall expects to distribute
the mails in much less time than here
tofore , and with increased accuracy.
He contemplates future and additional
improvements , when another appro
priation can be obtained.
