rich , C. H. Withnell , Wm. Neligh , J.
0. Dreiel and JL D. Hyde ,
Harold Dunlsp was the only son of
a widowed mother , who removed with
him and a younger sister to Nebraska
sometime ago to make It their future
home. They had lived in Indiana
previously , where the family had Buf
fered many vicissitudes throngh the
short-comings of the father , and the
widow centered her hopes for the fu
ture on her boj who was just turning
14 years of age , iras bright , loving and
indnstrious.devoted to his mother and
greatly attached to his employers and
fellow workmen.
Until about four months sga he
worked on hli uncle's farm near this
city , and at that time was apprenticed
to Mr. Daniel S. "Mitchell , to begin
the photographer's art. At the Bee
Hive studio te made himself generally
useful , and made n pid progress in ab
ility to help Mr. Mitchell in the var
ious departments of bis business.
When he first came to the Bae Hive
he was iu rather poor health , but that
improved gradually , and nntil a few
days ago h believed to ba per
fectly healthy , strong and vigorous ,
and with a long life of usefulness be
fore him. Bacently he complained of
headache , pains In his left leg and
right arm , and a bad feeling generally.
He thought he had rheumatism and
kept at his work as usual , only with
less vim than was customary. He
took no medicine except a simple
powder occasionally , and last night
used some medicine by outward appli
cation for the rheumatism. List
evening he made one or two trips out
in town , and during the evening
worked a very little and played some
with a boy who dropped in for a few
momenU.
Mr. Mitchell and his operatives
worked until about 11 o'clock , when
they left the studio , leaving Harold ,
who slept on a stretcher iu the oper
ating room , alone. Mr. Mitchell was
the last to leave him , and previous to
aaying good night brought down f' r
him some medicine , which he had up-
stain. This was the last that was
ever seen of Harold Duulap in this
life.

AR the whistle We ? thir morning at
7 o'clock the hired girl waa awakened
by a noise down stairs , and supposing
it was Harold building the fire paid no
further attention to it , beyond the
thought that he waa making m ro
noise than usual. Mrs. Connell , Mr.
Mithell's -later , was awakened about
the same time , but did not know nntil
later what was the cause.
About half-past seven o'clock the
employes brgira to arrive , Mr. O'Neill ,
the finisher , being the first. He tried
the front door , and not finding it open
went around to the back door. This
.also was closed , and he shook the doors
a little , which awoke Mr. Mitchell ,
who sleeps up stairs , and he came
down and opened the front door for
Mr. O'Neill. He noticed , as he did
BO , that yoang Dnnlap was" lying alill ,
asleep as he supposed , and that his cot
'bad fallen down and a chair had been
kicked over against the back door.
There were other signs of confusion ,
which' were afterwards explained.
After admitting Mr. O'Neill he went
up to the sleeping boy and shook him
gently. The lad was eo limp that it
startled him , and he told O'Neill to
come and see what was the matter.
The latter turned the boy's face
around ; he was lying on his face , his
hands beneath him , aud fouud that he
was dead.
Mr. Mitchell immediately went to
Mr. T. C. Brunner's store and tele
phoned Coroner Jacobat the same
time calling Dr. fc'cherer , who lives
next door and the latter arriving first ,
found life entirely extinct. The re
mains were removed to the under
taker's and the mother notified of her
terrible misfortune , "which nearly
broke her heart. The testimony of
Mr. D. S. Mitchell , Dr. F. Scherer ,
P. F. Davenport , Jennie Sampson
and J. K. O'Neil , was taken and did
not differ materially from the facts
stated above. It seems that he must
have risen , feeling the fatal moment
at hand and endeavored to reach the
stairway to call Mr. Mitchell. Being
unable to do this he returned and
threw himself , or fell , face downward
across the cot , -which rested on a chair
atone cnd'aud a box at the other ,
knocking both chair and box over.
He also in the course of his
death struggle threw over one of
the backgrounds , knocked two or three
pictures off of a hlch shelf aud caused
several other mishaps. This was ,
doubtless , the noisa which awoke Mrs.
Oonnelland the girand ) was less than
an hour before his body was discover
ed. A large dog slept in the same
rooHi , and apparently was not dis
turb'ed , at least he made no noise
about it.
Dr. Sober or give it as his opinion
that the sudden death was caused by
rheumatism of the heart and it was
not deemed advisable * to hold a prs
mortem.
The jury found a verdict in accor
dance with the facts.

Bo-nan's Home for the Horse , j
There are no better stables in all the

to be proud of. Extensive alterations

your reporter's pencil found an op

"forninst" the subject of HOMAM'S

ago , and a glorious good thing it was
for Omaha. It put a hoist of
several notches into the tails of some
of the gallauc equiues that board

didn't catch it , however , but concluded
that his funds at the bank would do
more good if put into carriages ,

unexcelled conveniences , would < ? o

"Our Boarding School"
Boarding schools have long had the
reputation of being institutions where
the monotony of hard study in the
pursuit of knowledge was varied by
a little fun and frolic , and the one
pictured to us laat night by Minnie
Palmer and her excellent company
proved no exception to the rule. It
was fuu all tha way through , as the
cheers and laughter of the audience
fully showed. The house was a large
one , and it is safe to say that not one
of the number left without having
added a pound or two of fat
to his person ' s a tribute
to the laugh provoking power
of the piece. Mies Palmer .is a very , ,
charming little actress , who plays her
part with a dash and sparkle that
capture the house at once. She baa ,
also a sweet , well trained voice , which
she u-.os with great effect , and these
qualities , aided to a more than ordin
arily handsome face and graceful fig
ure , make her a prime favorite where-
over she goes. The other members
of the company played their parts in
a satisfactory manner. Several local
hits were introduced , which invariably
brought down the house. To-night
the Bame troupe play again , and will
introduce new local hits. They de-
it.

THE SLOOUMB BILL.
Steps Taken by the Mer

Union to Test its Con
stitutionality.
'Addresses at the Meeting
Wednesday -Night.
In pursuance of the call for a mass
meeting of citizens at Brandt's Turner
hkll Wedneiday a large audience of
citizens a-sembled to listen to some
speeches on the eubject of the action
to be taken at the forthcoming city
election by the Merchants' and Manu
facturers' association and their friends.
Homer Stall. Eiq. , orestded , and Carl
Grandpre , of Tha Post , acted as sec
retary.
The first address of the evening was
delivered by 0. A. Baldwin , Esq. , who
cautioned the opponents of the Slo-
cnmb bill to be temperate in all they
should say and do during the next
three weeks. He believed that never
In the history of the city * of
Omaha had so much been ai
stake as now. The blow which was
struck at our merchants and mannfac-
turers was bound to be felt by every
farmer throughout the state , and the
steps taken in the matter should all
bo coolly , calmly and dispassionately
considered. He would not ad
vocate tLo slightest infraction of vhe
law but if unwise , impolitic and un
constitutional laws were passed the
pepple had a remedy in a resort to
the courts. He then explained the
organization under whose auspices the
meeting was held , eulogizing the char
acter of the men who composed it ,
and said that the very preamble
adopted expressed opposition to the
use of alcoholic drinks , and a resolu
tion aubsequently adopted de
nounced thn sala of liquors
to minors and to habitual
drunkards. Only those in harmony
with these views could act with the
society. A. resolution had also been
adopted offering the sovereignty of
the people and their power to control
aud direct legislation. Ho expressed
a belief that if the temperance men
and the liberals could come together
and calaily consider the matter in
controversy there would be no differ *
ences between them. A committee of
safety had been appointed to take
the necessary steps to test the con
stitutionality of the Slocumb bill.
The object of this meeting was to co
operate with them in tbeir efforts.
He thought it should not be made a
political question , further than th&t it
should be seen to that the officers of *
the city from the mayor doxn , wore
men who would carry out the wishes
of the people , The tenor of the argn *
ment on this point was that the same
rule now applied to violations of
the laws against gaming , etc. , viz :
one arrest only within a stated period ,
the time occupied in testing the law ,
should be recognized by the police
judge , and the parties should then bo
permitted to go on selling without a
new arrest nntil the disputed question
was settled.
Col. Mye was next called on and
premised that the subject of the meet
ing was "to protest against the tyran
nical Slocumb bill. * " He then proceeded -
ceeded to relate the manner in which
that bill was pjsaed. He declared
that not only was all debate cut ofT ,
but that all amendments were refused ,
one of which was to provide for the
tranefer of unexpired licenses in case
ot the death of the party taking out
such license , In order not to deprive
the estate of the party holding the li
cense and causing them to suffer an
unjust lots. He said the refusal to do
this was a heartless Invasion of the
precincts of citizens , of the rights of
men aud was unconstitutional. If
the bill was unconstitutional in one
respect , It was BO In all. Free speech
was , he said , suppressed in the senate ,
an act ol tyranny never before wit
nessed in this land. A combination
of men elected to cirry the bill
through without consideration or
imendment , had trampled upon the
freedom of debate , and there was but
one remedy left , an appeal to the pee
ple. .
The apeaker here lost the thread of
tils argument and made some very
wild assertions. He declared the love
of liquor to be the result nf the early
teachings and principles of Christianity
and drew a graphic picture of the auf
lering of the children of Israel for
forty years in the desert when all they ,
could get was water procured from a
rock by Moses * magic wand , and
their subsequent relief when/'tho new
Savior" turned that water into wine at
the marriage foast. He dechred that
if Kniser Wilhelm ihould take beer
away from his subjects he would not
jive a pinch of snuff for his throne.
3e wanted the liberals te organiza the
same as the temperance people , bring
their wives and daughters to the
meetings and sirg "Glory Hallelujih"
as well as their opponents.
Colonel Smythe was loudly called
'or and appeared amid great ap
plause. He tsok the ground
hat tha restrictions placed on
the dealers were unconstitutional and
he Slcumb law worse than the old L
Massachusetts witchcraft law. Ha
urged the people lo be careful in their
lelection of officers and get men who
iad a will of their own and would not
30 controlled by every passing wind
hat strikes them. He was with them
leart , body and soul in their work.
I. S. Hascs.ll followed Col. Smythe
md asserted that the law WAS a
raud on 'Lits face. Ha dis-
jussed at some length the
constitutional epect of the bill , and
Denounced the provision giving one-
'ourth the fine to spies and informers ,
Che law not only provided for the for
ellure rf a license but permitted any
'anatic to come in and rob the bonds-
nen of their $ -5,000. He was with
ho people in the effort to rid them-
lelves cf obnoxious laws , and if it
ouldn't bo done one way , it could
mother.
An executive committee , consisting
f three from each ward , was then ap <
jointed and the meeting adjourned.

THE BEE takes pleasure in bring
ing before its numerous Irish readers
and friends the following communica
tion containing a suggestion which If
acted upon as it doubtless will be can
not but result in great good :
Charles Collins , formally a citizen
of Omaha , where he was engaged in
the newspaper business , has lived in
Sioux City for the past ten yean , and
is well known throughout Nebraska ,
Iowa and Dakota. It will be remem
bered that he was the first man who
took an expedition into the Black
Hills , and on bis return spread tha
news abroad , which resulted In the
great stampede for that region a few
years ago. He was returning on his
second trip when his wagon train ,
which contained a complete printing
office in addition to a large stock of
merchandise , tras overtaken by United
States troops and burned , under
orders from the goyernment. Hts his
tory hae been one of bright and prom
ising dreams eah in turn dispelled by
some sudden misfortune coming just
on the eve of success.
Ho leaves in n few days for Ireland
with the intention of laying before his
countrymen the many advantages 'of
northern Nebraska and southern Da
kota , and has addressed the following
letter to his old friend , J. F McCart
ney , from whom we have received a
copy :
Sieux CITY , Iowa , March 18,1881.
DKAR Sin. I expect to leave here
in a few days to present to the people
of Ireland the inducements which the
west offers for securing cheap farms
and homes by the agricultural classes
of the Irish people. Should any of
your acquaintances in Omaha have
friends or relations who contemplate
leaving the "old land" for the new ,
please say to them that if they will
write to ouch friends to call on or see
me , I will famish them with any in
formation they may desire without
