3IABKABLE STORY OF ESCAPE AND
IMPEISONMEXT.
Xew York Sun.
"How did yon lose all f e fingers
of your tight hand ? " a man was
aakcd in a drag store in Yonkera.
"Shot off , " he replied. "Whenlhn
war broke out I enlisted as i private ,
aud the first actual service I was en
gaged in was the battle of Yicksburg ,
where I was wounded in the hip and
had the fingers of my right hand taken
off. The rebels took me prisoner. I
was transferred from one point to an
other till at last they landed me in
Anderaonvilla. There I received a
wound back of tha ear. The ball
went into rrv mouth and lodged di
rectly back the ear. Feel It ? " as
he placed 011 j of the reporter's fingers
on the spot indicated. Toe ball was
felt , it being about one fourth cf an
Inch from the surface. "The ball
don't pain me any , " he continued.
"Soon after this I fell into the
hands of Kirby Smith , and while try
ing to escape frotn'hiin I wan actually
forced into the Rio Grande river. Pre
ferring to die by drowning , I struck
out for all I was worth. Before I
had s tram a great distance , several
shots were fired at me , ono of them
struck mo iu the hip. Feel thnt ? "
placing the reporter's hand on the
spot indicated , where a largo ball
could be felt. "Well , I kept right on ,
and soon succeeded in reaching the
Mexican shore , but found that I had
jumped out of the frying pan into the
fire , for , after wandering about for
some time , n band cf Mexican
'greasers' caught sight of me. I
started on a keen run , but they all
being mounted , soon overtook mo
and called out to me to halt.
I paid no attention to this ,
and a shot from a blunderbuss
struck me in the breast and brought
roe to the ground. The wound has
not healed , owing to the poisonous
nature of tbo copper bullet. They
then surrounded mo and lashed mete
to one of their horses , without piping
any attention to mv wound , which
was bleeding. Loosening one hand I
succeeded in stopping the flow cf
blood by placing a red handkerchief
over the spot. I was compelled to
ride in this position for two days ,
only being relieved when thay halted
for f dinner or supper. Oa the third
day the whole baud was surrounded
and captured by Mexican Govern
ment troops , and they , being the
common enemy of everybody in genera -
era ! , were sentenced to bo hanged ,
and , of course , I was expected to
bavo to Eharo tlio ssmo fate
as the rast. They were taken
one at the time , and strung up. The
rope was put about my meek , when I
cried out , which only seamed to amuse
these t having charge of tha hanging. I
iapponed to have some old papers in
my inside shirt pocket , and on hold
ing them up I waa permitted to go un
hung , but waa placed in prison until a
further investigation into my case
could bo made. They kept me im
prisoned for nearly twelve years ,
irhlch was owing somewhat to the
: nrbulence existing in Mexico during
.bat pariod. I WAI finally released ,
about a year ago , through the efforts
of the American consul , who claimed
my release on the ground of my being
in American zz4 A soldier in the
Union army. I was transported to
aanta Fe , from there to Oruahp , from
hat pointtoOhicagoand from Chicago
to New York , wheio larriyed a few
days ago.
"While in New York my wound
was treated by Dr. A. B. Mott , who
said he could remove the bs.ll from
uy chest , but it would endanger my
Ifu. He told mo he thought it would
erentutlly work cut , r.oci then the
wouud would heal. Toe first thicg I
did on reachiug New Yoib waa to as

, hr.t limo lived in Palmyrs , were slill
iving , aud learned by latter th < t ihcy

'or ' dead several years aao. "
The veteran , who describes himself
as William Bray , arrived in Yonkera
about a week ego , aud was well taken
care of by members of tha Grand
Army and others. The only thing
which bothered mo in relating his
career was dates , as during hia long
confinement ho had become indiffer

SCHOOL CHILDREN'S SKIRTS.
AN APPEAL FOR THS BARE-LEGGED LIT
TLE ONES.
No JV York Sun.
Miss Susan Wright haa been a
teacher for twenty-ona _ years in the
girls' pub'.io sclool , in Twenty-eighth
street , east of Third avenue. She is
now the principal of thn primary Ju-
jarhnent. A short time ago sse
vrote a letter to the Board cf Health , I
n which she said that the short dresses
worn by many of the girl pupils did
more harm than bad plumbing and do-
'ective ventilation , and that the fash-
on made the children liable to rheu
matism , consumption , pneumonia and
other diseases which ore the result cf
exposure. Her letter closed as fol
lows :
"My sympathy for the ill-usod
children of tho'Uch and poor compels
mo to ask your attention to this cry-
ng abuse , and to risk the uupopulari-
; y of putting the blame where it
rightly balonga noon physicians , too
; ender-pocketcd to make parents full
aharera In the blame which belongs to
neglec'ed ' buildings and ignorant
; eaohers , in this 'murder of the inno
cents. ' "
The board oi health referred the
otter to the society for the prevention
of cruelty to children. Mr. Elbridgo
T. Gerry , the president of the society ,
returned an answer in which he
wrote : "It is impossible for the so
ciety to interfere upon the general
lomplaint preferred by Miaa Wright.
[ f aho will furnish evidence of any
specific act of wilful cruelty the case
will bo prosecuted at once. "
Miss Wright said yesterday to a
Sun reporter that even where poor
children ( n her school had been given
dresses of a proper length they had si
returned the next day with their dress siy
es cut short. The children of wealthy sib
> arenta were as poorly clad in this re- b
poet as the poor children. The stock- H
ngs might be of finer quality , but a
.here w&s no more warmth iu them , ii
ifotnera cover themselves with heavy iiti iiR
l&nnels and furs , and yet they eend ti
ont their delicate little girls with their tiI tit
ogs exposed , in some cases even above t
ho knee , to the cold winds. It is
81
simply a foolish desire , Mis ? Wright
to be in tha fashion. Years ago , _
girls \rora long dresses , ana wore then' h
sufficiently protected. Certainly girls ha'
are uot harder now than they wore a'd
then. She had lately seen
very small children who wore
socks and left a space of bare flesh
exposed above them. Little buya
with knickerbockers generally wear
ulsters , and are thus protected. The
cold b ranch more injurious to girls
than to boys. A great deal of sick so
ness In Iho eohooj , Mias Wright said ,
nrlses from this cause. In regard to
the answer of the society , she said
thai she could not , with propriety ,
give the names cf parents cf ill-clad
children. Iho society could sse the
children anywhere on the streets.
She hoped to accomplish much by
calling the matter to public notice ,
and believed that when parents
learned of the wrong they
were doing' their children , they
would seek to remedy the evil.
Mr. Elbridgo'T. Gerry said Ilia so
ciety did not work on theory , but on
law and evidence. It could not un
dertake to engage In a crusade against
the public schools , or the fashions fo
children's dresses. It was purely a
medical question as to whether tha
children sulfered by short dre ea. ]
a case was brought to his attention
where a child was actually suffering
on tins account the society would take
action at onca. Ha thought it 1m
proper to make sweeping assertions in
regard to children's dresses. Oni
child might suffer in a certain style o
dreas , while another might bo very
comfortable in it. Again , povert ;
h s much to do with it , as poor par
ents are often unable to clothe thei
children properly , The society couli
not undertake to furnish them , but i
would be glad to furaleh propar cloth
ing. If well-to-do people sent on
children' poorly clad it would ba an
other thing , and the society would in
terfere.
Superintendent Jenklne , of the so
ciety , said that , so far as hia observa
tion went , children did not suffer
much by wearing short dresses.
A * physician skilled in children'
diseases eaid that waa undonbtedl ;
unhealthy to expose any portion of th
body to cold. It affected the lungs
snd heart , aud was likely to bring on
diphtheritic and other complaints
All children should wear heavy under
clothing andlwarin woolen leggins in
cold weather. Stockings are a veri
insufficient protection in a cold wind
It was wrong to blame the doctor fo ;
the short dreaaca. They do not se
the fashions , and are only asked for
advice when the child becomes ill.
Several ladies , when asked whether
their children ever complained of cole
legs , replied that they did not. They
thought that if the children wore thick
woolen stockings they wonld ba very
comfortable.
A Bear Hunt In Newfoundland.
Earl of Dunravjn in J3llt Century.
Scarcely had Indian Joe and I got
well away from the camp next morn
ing when such a blinding storm of rain
c.imo on thst we were compelled to
mske a little shelter for ourselves
among some dwarf Junipers and wait
till it was over. We lit a little fire ,
boiled some water in a pannikin ,
brewed some tea , and talked about
hunting until the clouds lifted and en
abled us to BBO our way about the
country ; but the best part of the day
waa gone , and wahad to return to
camp without seeing anything , or even
a fresh track. The day following wo
were obliged to sot out on our homeward -
ward journey , for we had left our [
selves only just time enough to catch
the tug steamer which was to call for
us in the bay , even by traveling al
most night and day ; but as I was loath
to quit the country without one more
try , Joe and I climbed up to the bar
ren bolero daylight , leaving the oth- &
ord to pack up , carry the bagqage and
meat down to the Iako7 and get every-
thing ready for a start In the aftern'
noon.
Joe got the host of me that day to
the extent of § 25 , the villain. We
had walked for hours without seeing a
thing , when ho remarked in a casual
manner , "You have not seen no bears ,
have you , since you came on tha is
land ? " "No , Joe , " I replied , "not
even a sign. I should have thought
bears vrould have been plenty enough ;
there is lots of feed for them , good
ness knows , for the whole barren is
covered with blueberries ; but they
seem to bo very scarca. " "Yes , " an
swered Joe , "bear's awful scares in
Newfoundland , but I think I know a
pleco whsre we might find one , only I
ain't got much time ; want to
got back to my beaver
trapping , you know. What you give
me if I show yon a bear ? " "Oh , well , "
I said , "I don't know. There's no
chance cf that now ; but I would give
a tive-pound note for a shot at a buar
if wo had time to look for one. " "All
right , " aaid Joe ; "eapposelshow you
a bear within shot , you give mo five

The ground was very bare and open , aiti
but Bruin ( or "Mouin , " aa the Indi tir
ans call him ) was so busily engaged r
eating berries that ha allowed na to
crawl up pretty near. I had to wait
some time for a shot , for the bear
would not stand atitl for a second , but
kept turning himself about restlessly ,
moving rapidly from bueh to bush ,
grumbling to himself the while soin- "
plalninjj , DO doubt , about the scarcity
of borriea that autumn and the diffi BeAI

wo went after him as hard as we
could tear. How Joe jumped aud
bounded and yelled , and how the bear
did put down that hillside ! He
seemed to go twice as fast on three
legs as any other animal over went on
four. Sometimes Joe would head
tha bear and turn him ; sometimes the
bear would make a drive at Joa and
turn him , which would glvo me time
to get up ; and so we went on yelling
and whooping and plurging throcgh
the tangled , ma'ted ' junipers , the
bear doubl'ng and twisting ,
and sometimes charging us ,
but always struggling gallantly
to gain the shelter of the woods. Wo
had the bast of bruin so long as we
were on tha bare ground near the

hard and spongy as steel , then the
bear got so much the best of us that
wo feared we should lose him. Now
and then I would get ft shot , but shoot
ing under such circumstances Is chance
work , and I mused the bear several
timas , uutll at last with a lucky shot E
rolled him over , and Joe and I
threw ! ourselvea down exhausted -
ed beside his dead body.
Joe filled and lit his pipe , and
gasped out , "Oh , I thought we should
have taken off our breeches ! " I stared
' Joe , thinking his exertions had pro

said , "Why , Joe , what on earth should use i

worth from § 5,000 to $10,000 in good
cily property. There are negroes In
thia connty-who own 200-acre farms ,
with all necessary itnuroveiuonts. Ono
recently built a acnnol house for his
neighbors and got a country road

$100,000 worth of property is owned
by negroes in Halifax , Warren and
other countiea. Odds and ends of

DEATH IN "OLDGOLU. "
SAD FATE OF A GIRL WHO WORE GAUDY
STOCKINGS.
Qorlrudo Thornton , aged 6 yo&ra
daughter of A. G. Thornton , of Port
Jorvis , TX. Y. , recently died of pyromia ,
or blood-poisoning , resulting from the
wearing of stockings colored in "old
" and brown. Over
gold" a month ago
the child was coasting , and , being
thickly clad , her foot becime warm ,
and when her shoes were taken off it
was found that the coloring of "old
gold" and brown In the feet of the
stockings had been absorbed by the
warm flesh of tha feet , leaving the
Biocklnge almcat white. The girl soon
bcg n to show symptoms of poisoning.
Her limbs became swollen and discol
ored , and aha suffered tha most excru
ciating agony for thirty-eight days.
She would scream at times with pain ,
and during the whole time of her
sickness there was hardly a day with
out tl gnest suffering. As the end
drew tsvarher limbs and hipi became
swollen and mortified , and all the btdy
ezcept.tho fac3 ahowol the rank pola-
on. A half hour before her death she
sank into a comatose state and never
regained her consciousness. The ut
most skill of Dr. Sol. Van Etton could
not check the ravages of the poison.
