A Peruvian Hero.
Tha Lima correspondent of The
Cologne Gazette gives an aeaount of
a boat action which took place a few
weeks ago off the the harbor of
Gallao , and which provei that the
spirit of daring displayed throughout
the war by the officers and men of the
Peruvian navy haa not been destroyed
by tha many disastrous reverses they
bare suffered. A small steam hunch ,
armed with a mne-nounder gun and a
mitrailleuse , was on guard duty in
the harbor of Gallao , when about two
o'clock in the morning a Chilian launch
was observed approaching from the
north end of the Island of Sat. Loreno.
The Peruvian boat at once steamed
to maet its adversary , and firing four
rounds , at it osuao it to turn n < i make
its way back again behind the island.
"Shortly . afterard , howerer , the Chil
ian launch reappeared , accompanied
this time by a larger and armored boat
with two funnel * . Undismayed by
thu in : erinrity of its adv.ars.iry , the
Peruvian 1 .ucch hastened to the en-
oiiuuter , the officer commanding de
termining to endeavor to dectroy the
armored C .il' ' n vessel with a torpedo
eontainlug 100 pounds of powder with
which hi * bo it wat provided. Banning
under the bows of ilm Chilian boat the
Peruvian officer sought to explode his
torpedo by suiting bra to ita fuse with
a lamp , but tailing to aacompliah this ,
drew bis revolver and fiwd into the
torpedo. At the second shut this
latter xplodad So viulant was the
explosion that the Peruvian boat was
itself immediately destroyed , but the
bow of the Onilun vessel wa also
drivan in , and ths latter sank a'most '
immediately. The six men forming
the crew of the Peruvian launch were
drnwned , but the lieutei.aat was
picked up by the second Chilian boat ,
whioh also took cff the crew of her
coDBor. Since then attempts have
batn ruada by thu Chilians to raise
their sunken vesstl , but as the latter
lies under the guns of one of the forts
of , the harbor , tha effort has hitherto
been uusucctstful.

quired for the carrying ont of a plan
embracing the most essential features
of the original scheme , and lecnrina
the land in the immediate neighbor
hood of the falls from further disfig
urement. As this object can be ob
tained at BO reasonable an
expenditure , it is altogether probable
that the state legislature of New York
will see their way clear to ita realin-
tion. The necessity of action rell
becomes more urgent every year with
the growth of the surrounding com
munities and the development of man
ufacturing enterprises. The object
of those who have the scheme at heart
is not to drive away manufactures ,
but simply to exclude them from the
immediate vicinity of the cataract ,
while giving every opportunity for in
dustrial expansion by the use ol the
unrivalled water power of the falls at
a point somewhat further down the ton
river. This idea appears to meet the
requirements of the case , and by some
judicious compromise of this sort the
jjreat natural attractions of this world-
famous resort can be maintained in
harmony with the increasing material
prosperity of a centre of traffic and
manufacturing industry. The action
of the New York legislature , if fa
vorable to the scheme , rr some modi
fication of it , as there is now every
reason to hope , should revive interest
in the corresponding plan for the re
storation of a strip of laud on the
Canada aide , which , as will be seen bv
the details given , can be effected at
considerably less expense than that
entailed in buying up the land across ter
the river.
