Brooklyn Eagle , the superintendent
of a Sunday school out in the Black
Bills happened to be visiting some
'riends in Brooklyn , and , on invita-
tiin , attended the school services of
one of our popular Methodist church-
ea. Invited to address the children ,
he declined at first , but finally con
sented , and to illustrate the welcome
of the sinner to repentance related the
following anecdote :
"I reckon most of youyonng men
have hearn about that old feller in
Egypt , which was well fixed for kids.
The old man was heeled clear to his
neck , and thar wasn't a dip nor spur
that he wasn't onto , and yon bet he
had his squar dose of sheers in every
pay-dirt claim on the divide. He was
a peed old man , straight as a rifle bar' ]
ard without knot , rot or wood

neat For a long time ha had
been full owner o' an eighty stamp
mill , and travelers in them parts Keen
the imoke ruing from his chimney
pretty steady , and they knoweS quartz
was grinding and the dust was good.
There w rn't no funny business about
the old man. Ha knowed prime wash

long before the boys quit stealing his
mules and set right down to the levels

to do. Prospecting was no use. So
he went down on a ranch and told the
ranchmen he'd keep the coyotes off

kill him and smoke him and throw
him away and forget him before you
eat him , and yet that thar young mau
bived right down with them pigs and
drawed , when it was hia turn , and if

He made up his mind that he would

Yes , you bet your life , and he's wait

out and started in the stamp mill again

WOOD HIVKR.
THKKEWMININO KESION.
The great regicu of country known
as Wood river was an unknown , unex
plored portion of the earth two years
ago. A little over two yeira a o a
company of prospectors startud ont
From the Yankee Fork country to ex
plore the headwaters of Salmon river
for cold and other metals. In their
travels on the Salmon they found the
dead body of an Indian and a few
very rich leads of silver ore , which to
day are being worked by large com
panies , and are producing lart > u quan
tities of rich ore assaying 300 to 3000
ounces per ton. A few of the restless
ones of the party did not stay long
In the newly discovered region
but soon were on the road to a coun
try still more unknown to them than
the other had been. In two days'
time they hid made the summit of
the Sawtooth mountains and camped
on the "Wood river side of the range ,
wnere Galena City now stands. They
camped there several days to pp s
pact. They had not boon out a day
btfore they brought in large lumps of
galena ere. This c < tused great excite
mem in the party. They made nine
locations and all started back to Yan
kee Fork. There they had their vari
ous lamples of ore assayed , and , to
Iheir good fortune , It run up into the
hundreds of ounce ? of silver , with 60 or
70 per cent in lead. This nawi caused
great excitement in the whole country.
Every one that had a horse started
without delay to find a fortune. It
being very late in the fall they had to
return on account of deep snow.
Spring-time , however , found them all
back again. The excitement by spring
bad got out to Utah , Nevada and
Washington. Large quantities of
goods were taken to what is now known
us Belleview from Salt Lake City and
Boise. Belleview soon began to look
something like a town. Men were not
to be had to work at any price , as
all that were able were
out prospecting. In the course
of a month there had been
many claims found on the lower river ,
From which hundreds of tons of ore
have been sent to various markets.
Belleview has about 600 inhabitants.
Ketchum , 18 miles above Belleview ,
has 200 , also Galena. Bellevlew has
a public school ani other good insti
tutions. She polled 210 votes at the
recent election. The great outlook to
; his country Is via Blaikfoot a station
182 miles north of O den on the Utah
and Northern railroad. Belleview Is
distant 122 miles westerly from the
same point with a good wagon road
to It from there. There is a daily
1-ne of stages from Blackfoot to
