NOT BIBLE LANGUAGE. A DEADWOOD SONDAT SCHOOL SUPEBIK- TEKDEKX'S PAEABLB OF THE PRODIGAL SOX. Lsat Sunday afternoon , says The Brooklyn Eagle , the superintendent of a Sunday school out in the Black Bills happened to be visiting some 'riends in Brooklyn , and , on invita- tiin , attended the school services of one of our popular Methodist church- ea. Invited to address the children , he declined at first , but finally con sented , and to illustrate the welcome of the sinner to repentance related the following anecdote : "I reckon most of youyonng men have hearn about that old feller in Egypt , which was well fixed for kids. The old man was heeled clear to his neck , and thar wasn't a dip nor spur that he wasn't onto , and yon bet he had his squar dose of sheers in every pay-dirt claim on the divide. He was a peed old man , straight as a rifle bar' ] ard without knot , rot or wood pecker hole from root to crow's neat For a long time ha had been full owner o' an eighty stamp mill , and travelers in them parts Keen the imoke ruing from his chimney pretty steady , and they knoweS quartz was grinding and the dust was good. There w rn't no funny business about the old man. Ha knowed prime wash from ialt by the color , and it wasn't long before the boys quit stealing his mules and set right down to the levels nd picked for trade. They knowed he'd straddle any blind , but he dealt fir , < e > nd they respected him Well , children , the old man banked aheap o1 quartz. He had a big ranch , and the sheep in it was 03 thick as miners' tents. Thar was antelope , and prairie chickens , and jack rabbits , ind black-tail deer , till yon couldn't rest. And thar was lots of wheat and a big shack built o' logi , with a parlor In one bnd. Now , [ tell you , that tiur old man was tired up to the trap , and don't you forget nothing. But one o' his eons was kind o' restless. He wanted forte to prospect for himself. The old man give him the racket straight from the hip ; told him not to make a doggone fottl of himaelt. Stay where he waa. Thar was more money in a stamp mil I than thar was in mines , and he advised the kid to locate right there. Why , children , that thar old man knew from the fust sour that tha short didn't have no show , even for tailings , * nd that's tailings , even if he played o -"in. * ( a squar divide on the regu lar washl" "L > U the kid wanted long sjraas , so the old man sUrted him and gave him nis blessln ? , and told him fur to al ways dtal level with the table , and never lota man gut his elbow behind his kidiu-y on him , and so the boy vet * way. Fixed straight to hig hair. All the dun he wan ed. Best advice t > otiy ever got. What do you think h * die ? He went bioke. I never knew whether he got into a game whar they played straights , or whether some fel low held over him a squar deal , but he went clear to the bottom o' his sock , and struck bed r < .ck. Clean up , dead gone. Th-j yield didn't pan a cunt to the ton. Gulch dried up Dips crossed his angles. Blind leads fetched the only vein he had , ezcaot one , but that he didn't kn.w of. He was d giinn for yellow in black rock and couldn't see the glory that was waiting for him to aeaay and coin. Yes , you bet. Thar thet p ior boy , without money enough to buy a box o' matches , was driving where thar wasn't even pyrites , while all the sky waa pouring out the best color ever panned , and he couldn't get on to it. Well , thar was only one thing to do. Prospecting was no use. So he went down on a ranch and told the ranchmen he'd keep the coyotes off the pigs. Yon know what an orntry denied thing a pig It. You've got to kill him and smoke him and throw him away and forget him before you eat him , and yet that thar young mau bived right down with them pigs and drawed , when it was hia turn , and if be got a fair hand o' slaicka he was loose on his luck. Bimeby the racket ; ot too stiff for him , and he kicked. He made up his mind that he would Sock back to the mill and strike the old man for another stake. Did the old man go back on him ? Well , not For coin. Did he say he wasn't hiring any new hands , but the kid might get on to work at Hamilton HollowJ. I reckon not. Says he , 'Put it here , pard , ' and he just fell clean over him. That's style. That's trade from the origin. Thet ain't all. Thet thar old man fetched ont a buck skin trowsers , and an antelope shirt , and some buffalo boots and a camp bat , and drawed the young feller right in. Eh ] How'a that ? Gltting you now , am I ? Begin to hood on to my racket ? Know who the old mau was ? Yes , you bet your life , and he's wait ing for you to pss ) out on a bobtail and ior yon to onme to him and be fitted out and started in the stamp mill again like you never hopped the ti-ra-luand bonked out from under the family umbrella. Let up and be saved. For I tell you , children , the lower level jets awful hot sometimes , and if yon can do placer work with the sky right around you , keep away from the tunnel business , for thar's no drawing after the bet. I'd like to have you ping a hymn for me that wo sing in our Sunday school , * Bby Mine ; ' doyen yon know it ? " And to the a'tonhhmeut of the local superintendent they did know it , and he couldn't stop it. Spoopendyko's Calls. Brooklyn Fagie. "Now , my dear , " said Mr. Spoop endyk , ' 'let me see tha list of ladies you wish me to call on. T really don't care to go around much , but a man ought to do what his wife wants him to do on New Year's Dy. Where's the list ) " "Here it is , " said Mrs. Spoopen- dyke , fluttering around with her hair in her mouth. ' 'I wrote them all ont with the addresses for yon , so you wouldn't have any trouble. " ' What makes you put old Sister L mb at the head of the list ? " growl ed Mr Spoopendyke. "She's got a wart on her chin the size of a fire bell , and aho can't talk , anything but the advantages of eug over stove coal for heating the Sunday school. " "But sht belongs to the church , and I don't believe any ono else will call on her,1' reasoned Mrs. Spoopen dyke. ' 'She will bo tickled to death to see you. " "What do you think I'm starting ont for"demanded ? Mr. Spoopendyke , fiercely. "Got an Idea I'm going around like a missionary to carry the Gospel to people everybody else is afraid of ? Who's this ? Whst's this second name here ? . Who's Mrs. Sholymbretoy ? " "That's Mrs. Wolverton. I promIsed - Ised her yon would call. Never mind Mrs. Lamb , but you ought to call on Mrs. Wolverton. " "What for ? What has she got In common with me , except that her Dones are hollow ? She don't know the difference between a I Juinea pig and the burning of Jerusalem. Al ways wants to know il I don't think .hat Sodom and Gomorrah were par ables. IB that the kind of list you've made out ? Want me to run around among the old monuments ? Who's Mis. Swash ? " "Thafa Mrs. Smith , the little widow. You know she's interested ii sending woman ont west to get husbands. She'll amuse you. " "She will if she sees me. She'll make me laugh like a hyena if she- geta one eye on me. Who's that yel- low-headed girl that sits two pews in front of us ? I'd call on her , now. " "She's a little chit of a thing. You don't want to run after those young people a man of your agel" "What's the reason I don't ? " howled Mr. Spoopendyke. "Got an idea that I only care for the tough old people , haven't you ? Think I'm a sort o' Plymouth Bock , don't you ? Got any more old landmarks that need inspec tionl" "I don't care ! " remonstrated Mrs. Spoopendyke , Indignantly , "they're nice people , and I like to cultivate them They may be along in life , but they can't help it. " "Cultivate 'em if " you want to , growled Mr. Spoopendyke ; "but il you think I'm going hoeing around among 'em on the 1st of January , you're left. What d'ye want to culti vate 'em for ? With your friends and ideas you only need weekly prayers and an alarm of fire to be an old woman's home. Who else have yon got here ? Mrs. Sllggonspratt , Mrs. Woptenslough , Miss Mimpzf " "You don't read them right at all , " complained Mrs. Spoopendyke. "That is Mrs. Silverapoou , and Mrs. Worthington - ington , and Mrs. Hemmingway. They are { ustaa nice as they can be. "Are they the three old worthies who howl 'In the choir ? " asked Mr. Spoopendykesternly. "They've got a grandson old enough to be my fath er. " "They haren't , " sobbed Mrs Spoop- endyka. "You know better. " "Well , mcst of 'em have. What d'ys want me to call on them for ? Got any more old almanica expecting me ] Where's the Sphinx ? You haven't got the Sphinx down here , nor the Tower of Babel. Who're these other pyra- mldn ? Who's Mrs. Upiidedown ? " 'That's Mrs Edgerton. She sent you the jelly when you were sick , and you said she was the best woman in Brooklyn. You will have to call on her for politeness , " said Mrs. Spoop endyke , severely. - , "I won't either 1" shouted Mr. Spoopendyke. " The jelly was sonr , and ehe made me pay a dollar towards a plaater-of-parts angel for a starving family out in FUtbmh. Who's this other nurse of Mr. George Washing ton's ? Here , this is a mutake ; I went to old Miss Schumalock's funeral thir ty years ago. "You didn't ! You never did ! " pro claimed Mi. Spoopendyke , thoroughly aroused. "That isn't her name , either. It's Mia > Schofield , and she is the best friend I've got. I only want " * 'I know what you want , " hissed Mr. Spoopendyke. "You wan't a few more acquaintances , and a map , to be a guide-book to ancient Troy. Think I'm going to cull on the old m nolith ? Got anything here that belongs to mi'dern times ? Know anybody who haa been dug up within tx or eight centuries ? Who's that black-eyed girl in th i Bible-class ? Don't she hang out a flag t i-day 2" "I wouldn't look at her , " sniffed Mrs Spaopendyke , "I wouldn't have you go there for worlds. Bo- iide , ih don't reseive. " "What's this ? " demanded Mr. Spoopendyke. "What's Mrs. Wimpqjtyx got to do with it ? What cemetery will I find her in ? " "That's Mrs. Willoughby , " explained - plained M . Spoopendyke , complac ently. "She's the young widow who recently joined the church. " "Don't mind calling on her , " said Mr. Spoopendyke "She wasn't born mor'n 4,000 years before the Chris tian era. Got any more like her ? Does this measly list contain any body else who wasn't the mother of the Chinese Empire ? Think of any more grave-stonea that haven't had the epitaphs worn off ? " "No , " replied Mrs. Spoopendyke , coldly , "and I now remember Mrs. Willotighby receives calls with friondn in Buffalo. " "Dod gait your dod gastod list ! " b6\vled Mr. Spoopendyke , dancing on the nnhappy document. "What d'ya think I am ? A ghout ? S pose I'm going to prance around among all 4he measly old ghosts in Brooklyn ? S'poso I'm going to swash around and eat cake and drink lemonade with a lot of illustrations of the Silurian period ? Thiak I'm goingto spend the day with a lot of articulated old skeletons just Decauio they belong te the same church that I do ? And Mr. Spoopendyke popped out of the house like a bung , ind went next door to see if his friend Tortorthumb knew any mummies of whose history there was sorno tra dition. "I don't care , " said Mrs. Spoopcn- dyke , aa she wai whirla'd around two or three times to practice kicking hei ber train ; "If he don't call en the church people , they'll be hopping mad ; ai.d , if he does , he won't have much of a time ; so he'll wish he i * dead either way , " and Mrs. Spoopen dyke bustled into thu parlor to ii ° iure a sandy-haired young man with u stiff neck that it was awful good of bim to come , and to lotrn ha hadn't come far of his own volition , but had slid most of tkS * way. WOOD HIVKR. THKKEWMININO KESION. The great regicu of country known as Wood river was an unknown , unex plored portion of the earth two years ago. A little over two yeira a o a company of prospectors startud ont From the Yankee Fork country to ex plore the headwaters of Salmon river for cold and other metals. In their travels on the Salmon they found the dead body of an Indian and a few very rich leads of silver ore , which to day are being worked by large com panies , and are producing lart > u quan tities of rich ore assaying 300 to 3000 ounces per ton. A few of the restless ones of the party did not stay long In the newly discovered region but soon were on the road to a coun try still more unknown to them than the other had been. In two days' time they hid made the summit of the Sawtooth mountains and camped on the "Wood river side of the range , wnere Galena City now stands. They camped there several days to pp s pact. They had not boon out a day btfore they brought in large lumps of galena ere. This c < tused great excite mem in the party. They made nine locations and all started back to Yan kee Fork. There they had their vari ous lamples of ore assayed , and , to Iheir good fortune , It run up into the hundreds of ounce ? of silver , with 60 or 70 per cent in lead. This nawi caused great excitement in the whole country. Every one that had a horse started without delay to find a fortune. It being very late in the fall they had to return on account of deep snow. Spring-time , however , found them all back again. The excitement by spring bad got out to Utah , Nevada and Washington. Large quantities of goods were taken to what is now known us Belleview from Salt Lake City and Boise. Belleview soon began to look something like a town. Men were not to be had to work at any price , as all that were able were out prospecting. In the course of a month there had been many claims found on the lower river , From which hundreds of tons of ore have been sent to various markets. Belleview has about 600 inhabitants. Ketchum , 18 miles above Belleview , has 200 , also Galena. Bellevlew has a public school ani other good insti tutions. She polled 210 votes at the recent election. The great outlook to ; his country Is via Blaikfoot a station 182 miles north of O den on the Utah and Northern railroad. Belleview Is distant 122 miles westerly from the same point with a good wagon road to It from there. There is a daily 1-ne of stages from Blackfoot to Ketchum which carries express and the " 0.
