Should you see it to accept this proposition , please communicate with us at once. Respectfully , LA-WSON & Oon Solicitors. Such was the letter , startling in its unexpectedness and chilling in its for mal phraseology , which Florence May placed in the hands of her lover. "What shall I dol" she asked , wist fully , lifting to his her tearful , beau tiful eyes. "It came this morning. Ihave delayed answering It until you could advise what to do or say. I sup pose the offer Is a generous one , but if Uncle Onrtiss hadr called npon me , or even written tome himself , ! should have felt much happier. Surely , he has chosen an ungracious way of doing a kind and gracious action. " Robert Curtis looked at the letter with a degree of surprise that for the moment caused him quite lo ignore his pretty sweetheart's complaint. I 'Roger Curtlss ! " cried he. "Why , that mutt be my rich old curmudgeon of a landlord. Lawaon & Oo. tran sact his business , I know. And Is he a connection of yours ? How stranga , to be sure ! You need not wonder at anything old Gurtiss does , my darling. I see a good deal of him , not only on account of his office being next to mine he owns the whole building , you see , and lets it nil in officer but because of the similarity in our names. Only the difference of a letter Curtis and Curtisa and people are continually making mis takes in consequence. I don't know how to advise you , Florrle , dearest. Mr. Curtlsa is a terribly eccentric , stingy , disagreeable old fellow among his fellow-men , and to tell the truth , an ignorant , coarse , selfish fellow into the bargain , and yet he might be kind and good to you. Wno indeed , " he added , tenderly , softly caressing her bright hair , "whe could be otherwise ? And we should meet sometimes. You would be here with your own people , not trailing as a governess among strangers. I hatu to think of that , Florrie. But why , in the name of wonder , pet , have I never heard of your Uncle Curtisa before ? " "I uon't think I ever thought of him , " Florrie answered , frankly. "I have never known him , you see. He was poor mamma's half-brother only , and after her marriage , which ho did not approve , he ignored her existence altogether. I have heard papi apeak of him sometimes as an old bachelor , very cross and whimeical. who inher ited a large fortune from his own fath er , and added to it until he became Very rich. " Robert took alarm instantly. "He'll want to make yon his heir ess , " said ho , "and break your engage ment with me. Of course he looks upon me as he did upon your father aa a poor , beggarly devil of an artist. Oh , Florrie , dear , why can't we con sult our own happiness and be married at once ? " But Florence shook her head. "You know that cannot be , Rob ert , " she said , gently. "Poor dear papa is scarce two mouths dead could I forget my grief so soon ? Not even for you ! But , surely , you are not afraid to trust me ? I would not exchange vour heart's true love for the wealth of all the world ! " Her lover caught the fair girl to his breast. "I know it ! " he cried. "I do not fear you , love , but old Curtisa. If he is going to make you rich , he will assume the right to choose your hus band ; and I am very sure that hla choice wouldn't fall on me. " Florence smiled. "You are my choice , " she said , softly and tender ly. "Does that not content you ? Do you think that I would accept fortune at the price of. love ? But I will say nothing of our engagement to Uncle Gurtiss , unless he questions me. And if he does so , " she added , archly , "shall I tell him that you have real estate up town ? " At that question Robert's gloom was disiipated by a merry laugh , in which Florrie's vcice chimed music ally. "Raal estate , " cried Robert , merrily. "Don't I wish I had ! Our future lives would look brighter , dear ? But that old rat-trap , so far up town that wo couldn't even live there our selves even If it were inhabitable on account of the distance. And yet , If we ever do have rapid transit , pet , the place would be valuable. It may ifive us a lift in the world some of those days , after all But don't speak of the poor old shanty to Uncle CurtisB , pray ; he knows what real es tate ii , and the weight of scorn for my poor inheritance would crush its crumbling walls. " So it was agreed between the pair that Florence should keep silence about her lover's landed property , and also about her young lover herself , aa far aa possible. But old Roger Curtisa was sharp and keen , and made up in natural acuteness - ness and observing power wbateve the looked in experience or education. He had never married. Possibly he had never made love except to money but he recognized the symp toms of the tender passion in his ten ant at the office and his niece at home , for all that. "What's that artist feller doing around here ? " he asked Florrio. gruffly , when she had lived in his house a year. "He cornea oftener than ever of late. Ob , to be sure ; I know 'he's n old friend , and pspa liked him ; ' you've told me that before ; what's bothering me it that papa's daughter likes him , too. And it won't do , Florrie ; you may aa well make up your mind to it first as last ; It won't do I" Florrio turned red and then pale. II What won't do ? " she asked quietly. "Oh , you knowl You're smart enough. He won't do. Love rubbish between you two won't do. You'ro my niece. You'll have money. I want something better than a beg garly artist for your huiband , my girl ! " Florence flushed crimson , and her eyes flashed indignantly. "My mother married an artist ! " she cried. "I know it , " said Roger Curtiss. "What did she gain by it ? She lived and died poor , and left you penniless. What did she lose ! She lost a friend in me , my girl. It ain't the man ] object to. Young Curtis is well enough , if his name is spelt wrong. What I object to is his poverty. " "But I also am poor , " saidFlorence ; "and if Hove him , uncle " "Stuff ! " interrupted Roger , gruffly. "You've got no business to do any thing of the kind. You ain't poor. Haven't I given you a good home , fine clothes , money to spend , and servants to wait on you ? Haven't ] been a good uncle and a good ftiendi Well , you be a good girl to me in your turn , and marry to please me , and see if I don't give yon a fortune into the bargain ? " It was all true. The rough , coarse , eccentric old man had been kindness Itself to his orphan niece , and , in spite of much that wai repulsive In his ways , the young girl was grateful and had learned to love him. In good truth , Florrie would have been glade ; o find it possible to keep faith with lertruo love and yet please her uncle , ; oo ; and this out of thankfulness for ; he kindness he had already shown 10r , far more thin from the hope of any benefits yet t J come. She went up to him now at his last words , and flung her arms about his neck and kissed him ; and aa she did so she said , archly : "He's quite rich ! He hss property up town real estate. " "Ha , ha , ha , ha ! A shanty on the rocks , perhaps1 ! ' shouted Uncle Curtis - tis § ; then , as he saw her weeping with vexation , "There , there , my girl , I won't quarrel with you ; I'll talk to the young man about It. " He hurried to Robert's door , but stopped short. A card was nailed to It , announcing that the artist would not return till noon. "Noon be It , then , " grumbhd the old man , cross ly , and turned into his own private room. Letters lay on his desk. He opened , read , laid them on one side , until he came to one that puzzled him ; it ran thai : "R. Gaums , ESQ. Dear Sir : We are offered $80,000 cash for the house and lot on 61st street , which you in structed us to sell. Your place at Harlem we shall put on the market to-morrow. If offer named is satis factory , please answer. "Yours respectfully , JOHN SMITH. " Old Roger Curtisa drew a long breath and gave a longer whistle of surprise. "By glngar , now , " mut tered he , "the girl was right. I've ; ot no house on 61it streat , nor at larlem , and Curtis with one 'a' isn't me. She said 'real estate up town. ' She's , right. This is R. Onrtis's ( the artist's letter , and it's come by mis take to me. " He sat pondering , there for quite a long time. This fine discovery alter ed the aspect cf affairs entirely. "If the girl likea the fellow , " he mused , "why should I cross them , since he is so well off ? I'd like to see her happy. But why has he always worked so hard and let people think him poor ? " By and by he arrived at the conclu sion that thii was merely an eccentric ity In Robert. "Artists are full of whim ? , " thought ho. "Well , 1 won't cross him , especially as his real cir cumstances have come to my knowl edge so queerly. I remember now that Florrie didn't speak of the real estate until she was hard pushed. He told her to keep it quiet , of course. Well , I'll la as smart as they are. I'll keep my discovery all to myself , and ? ive my consent generously , as if I know nothing at all. " And he did , to Robert's delight and surprise. The artist had just come from an interview with his lady love , and ras expecting an unfavorable an swer to his suit. Imagine his aston ishment when the eld man consented immediately. "Though you're not rich , " said he , "my girl loves you ; and why should I stand in the way of your happiness f I'll give her § 50,000 dowry , sir , and you must settle upon her that real estate which she tells me yon own up at Harlem. " Robert agreed instantly. "It isn't worth so much now as it will be after awhile , " said he. ' 'The elevated road i really begun at last , and I've had an excellent offer for the place this very day. But I mean to hold on for better prices. " "Do so , " cried Uncle Curtiss , eagerly. "You're right. Hold on to all your property up town , sir. Values are going up ! " Then , in great alarm , lest he had betrayed his secret knowl edge , "And when is the wedding to be ? I never was a friend to long en gagements myself , and the sooner you two get married the better ! " Both the lovers agreed to this , be ing in terror lest he should change his mind. Two weeks later they were quietly married Uncle Curtis being good as his word , and paying over to the bride her dowry of § 50,000 , while Robert modestly gave her the deeds of the Harlem "rat-trap , " which really bid fair to reach , in time , a very high value , too. "There's a letter for yon at my office came to me by mistake , " sail Roger , as he bade them good-bye at the depot ( they were going on a quiet wedding trip ) , "something about your property , but it'll keep. This isn't the time to sell. " And he chuckled over his own cleverness as ho hurried to his office down town. A gentleman was waiting there to see him a tall , elderly stranger. "I am seeking a letter , which I fancy has come here by mistake , owing to a similarity ef name , * ' said the stranger. "It is too late to be useful now , but I should like to be satisfied about it. Here is my card " "R. Curtis , Esq. , " said the card. Roger looked at it blankly. "Roger or Robert ? " inquired ho , In a kind of despair. "Neither , " said the stranger , politely. "My name is Richard Curtis , at your service , air. The letter was from J. Smith. " Roger produced it very quietly. The gentleman thanked him. "The mistake has cost mo some inconvenience , " he said. Roger glared at him. "The mistake has cost me § 50,000 ! " he groaned. "Great heavens ! " cried R. Curtis. "How ? " But R. Onrtiss was reticent. "Ex cuse me , " said ho ; my only consola tion is , that no one will ever know how I fooled myself. No one has been to blame. I wasn't so smart as I thought myself , that's all. Not smart enough , indeed , to reflect that there might be three of one name ! " RELIGIOUS. Cincinnati has a Sunday school class of thirty-three Chinamen , all of whom are apparently sincere converts to Christianity. The Third Presbyterian church ol Pittsbnrg , Dr. 0 Xi. Last Sunday at the Metropolitan Church , Washington , was devoted to wiping out the debt , and ihat the effort was successful Is attested by the fact that 814,000 was raised , leav ing only § 1000 to be lifted. The late Bernhard McCane , of the Manayunk District of Philadelphia left § 300,000 in bequests to Catholic religious and charitable Institutions , including § 100,000 for the church at Manayunk. The American Presbyterian board of mlislons has received from the es tate of the late Mrs. Lapsley , of New Albany , Ind. , the sum of § 215,000 with the prozpect of recelying § 60 - 000 or § 70,000 more from the same source. The Irish Disestablished church la likely to suffer severely on account of the land agitation , and it is suggested by some that an appeal be made to the Church of England in Its behalf Many landlords hare ceased to con tribute to the church , and others have reduced their donations. There are now absnt fifty French- speaking Presbyterian congregations in Canada , though forty-five years since not a solitary church would have been found. Five years ago they had occupied but nine fields ; now the number has grown to forty-two , with fifty-one laborers , wholly devoted to the work. Of these , eighteen are able to converse In both English and French. The proposed visit of Moody and Sankey to New Orleans will ba post poued for somp time on account of the immense quantity of work which they are doing in San Francisco , and which is yet to be done in that city. As they propose to visit England during the coming spring and summer , if they should be detained much longer in California the trip to New Orleans must be postponed indefinitely. In any event their stay will not be long. From New Orleans they will go to New York and take steamers for England. GREATEST REMEDY KNOWN.
