THE .FLOOD OF IMMIGBAT1ON. The past year has witnessed the arrival - rival on our shores of the largest num ber of immigrants in the history of the country. At the port of'New- York alone , 320,808 immigrants were landed. The only year approaching 1880 in the number of arrivals was 1854 , when 319,223 immigrant * were landed at Castle Garden. In 1879 but 135,070 immigrants were register ed in New York. The total number booked at Castle Garden since 1847 is 6,177,833. The bureau of statistics furnishes the figures in regard to the immigra tion into the United Statea during the month of November , from -which li it appears that 42,051 passengers ar rived at the various ports , of whom 37,851 were immigrants'who expected [ i ed to make their permanent residence In our country. 0f this total number of immigrants there arrived from England , 3,607 ; Wales , 112 ; Scotland , 509 ; Ireknd , 3,631 ; Germany , 11,163 ; A-jstris , 1,529 ; Sweden , 1,754 ; Norway , 698 ; Denmark , 271 ; France , 347 ; Switzer land , 513 ; Spain , 72 ; Holland , 115 ; Belgium , 102 ; Italy , 1,252 ; Russia , 457 ; Poknd , 109 ; Hungary , 797 ; Dominion of Canada , 10,846 ; China , 372 ; Cuba , 153 ; Au tralia , 74 ; Mexico ice , 201 ; Azores , 62 ; and from all other countries , 90. The number of immigrants arrived from foreign countries at the above mentioned ports during the five months-ended November 30 , 1880 , was as follows : Dominion of Canada 70M2 Germany 64,556 Knsland and Wales 29,081 Ireland 26.954 Scotland 6.541 China 2,390 All other countries 54,295 Total 250,468 THE LAND LEAGUE. One of the most valuable contribu tions to the history of the Irish Land League is the article of Mr. T. P. O'Connor , M. P. , published in the December Contemporary. Mr. O'Connor first proceeds to show the sources from which the Irish news roach the public. The Dublin correspondent pendent of the London Times is the manager of the Daily Express , the recognized organ of Irish landlords and the -blHer opponent of Irish re form an we. ti.thcL.libBral ralmatry. * From the IJOK enf1 * th B101" pirt of cablogrLra , to America are copied by correspondents and tlio Land League is maliciously repre' sentod as hostile to law and order and the direct cause of a large increase in crime. Mr. O'Connor has conclu sively refuted this charge in a mo&1 able and convincing paper , frcm which wo obtain the following sum mary : It is emphatically denied that crime has increased in Ireland , cithoi through the land league or any othei agency. In 1833 , there were In Ire land , according to official report , 175 .homicides , 465 robberies , 455 hough- Ings of cattle , 2,095 illegal noticosj 425 illegal meetings , 796 malicious in juries to property , 753 attacks on houECB , 3,150 sarioua assaults ; an aggregate of 8,317. In 1836 the sum total of all crimes was 23,89L In 1845 "of fences against the person" numberet 1,093 , and "offences against the pub- lb peace" 4,645. In 1846 the nura- bsr of these offences were , respect ively , 1,923 and 4,76C. In 1848 there ware 171 hom'cides ' , 97 firings at pot- i jus , 237 robberies of arms , 95 firing ! Into dwellings , and 750 incendiary fires. la 1849 , 203 homicides , 53 firings at persons , 113 robberies ol rms , 90 firing ! into dwellings and 1,066 incendiary fires. In 1859 there were 45 murders , 2 attempts to mur der , 57 shooting ai , stabbing , etc. , conspiracies to murder and 102 casre of manslaughter. la 1870 the num ber nf sgrarlan outrages was 1,329. Now , according to a return made to the house of commons at its lasi ten sion , the sum total of crime in Ire land from January , 1879 , to January , 1880 during which period the league wis in full operation was only 977. For the last year no compleSo return is yet obUmible , but in ll o four most distressed counties Gal way , Mayo , Sligo and Donegal from Februarpl to June 30 the number of offenses was 187. In the whole island during 1880 only five murders are at t tributed to the land agitation , and one of those is believed to have been an act of private vengeance that cf Wheeler at Limerick a few weeks aco. These figures show that the operations of the league have not increamd crime , rather tha rcvorse. It has not been towards increasing disorder , but towards preventing dis tress that the cflorts of the land league have boon directed. Mr. Gladstone himielf admits most fisnkly that in proportion to the distress of the ten ants the landlords rasorfc to the pro cess of the Uw and wbcu least able to p y raut are most liable to ba turned out of doors. The effjrts of the land league have bsen directed towards pre venting evictions by making them un profitable to the landlords. What has bean the result ? In 1847 , 70,000 tenants were evict ed , or about 300,000 persons. Tn 1849 , 50,000 evictions took place , and from 1849 to 1852 inclusive , 221,845. Tais WM in the ftur years succeeding the great famine , when starving wretches lay dying on the highways , and the purse of landlordism remain * ed , closed .to the sufferings of the ton- ants. In 1886,1,269 evictions took place. In this year the crops were aveiage. In 1848 , when the harvest was poorer , 1,749 evictions were recorded , and in 1880 when famine was Imminent 4,000 tenants , unable to meet the demands of rent , were turned out of house and home. At the beginning of the season Mr. Gledstone expressed the fear that at least 15,000 persons "would be eject- id from their homes , without hope or emedy , in the course of the present ear'1 (1880) ( ) . Instead or 15,000 evlc- IODB there have been only 4,000 ; and IT. O'Connor says : "The only agen- : y which did exist in 1879 and 1880 , and did not exist in 1847 and 1848 , and the only agency , therefore , that an have caused the decrease in ovic- ions is the land league. " The Land League strengthened the Ailing hopes and cheered the spirits if a struggling and suffering "people. So far from encouraging crime it dis- caurnged all manifestations of dis- crdor. This remarkable organization has kept within the law , and by its ilent though powerful influence has exercieed a control over the people which neithar landlordism nor the display of armed forces has been able to dissipate. This is. the reason that a hireling and partial press has as- cailed with its abuse men like Parnell and Dillon. Having accomplished such great re sults there ara still greater ends in view. Until a fair and equitable ays tern of land tenure prevails in Ireland the work of the league will not be fin ished. It is daily increasing in strength , popularity and influence. Ouly Irishmen know how loyal , how disinterested , how steadfast are ts members. And when the future hittcry of Ireland is written Its mem bars will take their places by the side of the bravest and noblett opponents of Erin's wrongs , and the most fe&r- lees defenders of Ireland's rights.
