Everybody Celebrates a Lit tle. New Teara" day in Omaha dawned bright and clear and closed calm and beautiful. It was as fine a day as could have been wished for inaugural ing ' new year's work and was accepted - od and made use of accordingly. The day was obaerved by merchants , bankers and business men generally , doors wera closed everywhere and the only life visible on the streets was the stream of ekaters iwending their ray to tbo rink , the avalanche of small boys and large boye , on tUida of every siza and diszription coasting on the hills , and the carriages driven from place to place with New Year's cilK-rs or drawn up in line be fore some palatial residence. The number of thoia who kept open house was perhaps notquito BO Jargons last year , the disposition being to combine forces , and consequently r.t many of the favorite places of calling the host ess was found surrounded by a bevy of good looking young hdies , and a guard of their matronly lookIng - Ing elders. In many places day-light Wa3 excluded for gas light , supposed to heighten the effect of the toilets aud occasionally lessen the visible effects cf the pencil with which the threat artist time decorates tha face of every one sooner or later. Music was a feature in many places , but elegant toiieti w n * too general to need much special menticn. KELSEY-1IOUCK. On the evening of New Yeir's day , the residence of Mr. D. B. Houck , on North Nineteenth btreet , was ti e aeno r > f one of the plaasautcst wcd- dmgs we have had to record for some time. The high contracting parties were Mr. Charles R. Kelsey , wbo manages the business of D. C. Adaine , Esq. , agent in this city for Sprague , Warner & Co. , Chicago , and Miss Belle Houck , the lovely and accom plished daughter of a well- known ox-member of the police force. The wedding ceremony was per formed about 0 o'clock by the Rev. James Williams , of St. Barnabas church , after the solemn and very impressive ritual of the Episcopal church , and with the beautiful ring son-ice. The bride's attendants were Miss Mollle Cotter and Miss Mamie Gardiner , while tha groomsmen were Mr. Lawrence McMahon and Mr. W. S. Scobio. The bride was elegantly and tastefully dressed. She made her responses in a clearfirm voice. After the ceremony was * over the usual congratulations followed , and that pleasant duty bo done , the bridal party and guests sat down to a royal feast , which occupied a consid erable portion of the . The invitations being confined to the rela tions and most intimate friends , the party was just large ouou h to t f ex tremely agreeable aaa "there was a delightful % \ > aonce of formality. JIayor and Mrs. Chase and Mifs Emi ly Butterfield entertained most hos pitably every ono who called , and the number of cards -jpon the tabla in the eroning indicated that over two hundred and fifty persons had been happy to pay their respaccs to the party at the mayor's mansion. Among these were counted iu the fire department , under Chief Galllgan , the city council , the police force , Company G in uniform , and repre sentatives of every daily newspaper in the city. The ample parlors were fhrown wide open , end through these the visitors passed to the dining- room , which as a marvel of richness in culinary treasure * . It was beauti fully dec irstod with flowers , cs well is by ailvt > r , cut glass , and china , itid its re f-urces never seemed to diminish in tlio slightest. Lieut. One of the boldest robberies of the past six months was that perpetrated on S itnrday evening , of which Mr. J. H. i Fliegel , the merchant tailor , in Visscher's Block , was the victim. In the observance of New Years day , Mr. Fliegel had left the shop about noon and did 'not return until late in the evening. Two of his men had ben there during the but left r-bout G o'clock. Between that e and 7 o'clock ' the robbery wss accomplished. Mr. Flietjel'a ehop fronts towards Hubormann's block , and it seems itn possible that any one could have the hardihood to go into it in the broad glare which always lights np that portion tion of Douglas street during the evening. The thieves went to the front window where they broke out a pane of glass large enough to afford u ready entrance. They then proceeded to unlock the front door from within and pulled down the curtains to pre clude iho view from the streets. After that they made thorough work of it , emptying shelves and relieving hooks of their weights until thy had accnmuUted over S-t 00 rih of valuable clothing and co3tl J > patterns. They took among other thinga a heavy new overcoat , a brown drtss coat , twelve pairs of pan- ttloo.18 , five or six pants' patterns , aud several suits independent of the garments enumerated abuvo. Havi got about all they could conveniently get away with the 1'ght was turned out end the store desert ed. Between 3 and 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon there waa a row" of consid erable proportions at the intersection of Dodge and Thirtsoiitb streets , which attracted a large crowd of lookera-on before it was 0Ttf. ? It appears that a number of men bad bceu testing their * tfength in the saloon at the northwest corner of Dodge and Thirteenth , known as "Tho Mint" and kept by Levilie & Quinn. One of the party hi over come all the others In this tea * , which consists in two parties flitting down on the floor , bracing their feet agains th their opponent and then the two seizing upon a stick with both hands and palling until one raises the other from the floor. The victor is said to have expressed his belief in his ability to ra'so any man in town in that manner , and ono of his com panions , who may have been a little jealous of his prowess gave him the He ; upon this a blow was given , and a general fight precipitated. The pro prietors of the ealoon who aay that they had nothing at all to do with the row , immediately put the combatants out.on the sidewalk and locked their Ara. Tno rumpus that followed WEB of nearly half an hour's duration and a mdat disgrace * ful end ditgusting street fight. Thu police did not put in an ap- pearancu until after ono of the com batants had been knocked down and j imped on several times , and when they came the blood of the fighters was up and they had no dis position to bu arrested. Some r n ono way and some another and the officers were em ployed in alternately running after a man and keeping his friends off when ho captured him. Deputy Marshal Weaterdahl , and Officers McOlure , Ford , Bellamy , Black , Donahoe and others wera all kept busy quelling the disturbance , and at length landed five of tJ.o parties in.j iil. This morning they wore brought be fore Judge Ha was and two of them fined S3 and costs for drunkenness , ono $5 and costs fur fighting and one § 15 and costs for resisting an officer in the dhcharce of bis dutieo. Qn Saturday evening Mrs. B. McNeil , who resides on Pacific street , between 7th and 8th , received quite a severe Injury and came nearbeing killed in a very mysterious manner , She was out In the yard about six o'clock , gathering in some clothes at the line when suddenly she heard a shot , and the next mordent a pistol bill flaw by her face , so close as to plough a deep hole in her cheek , and glancing off from the cheek bone , alao inflicted a wonnd on her right ear. A few momenta before her daughter , Mrs Warwick , a bride of six months , was just passing from the house to call on a neighbor. She observed a man standing in the street with one hand behind him , as though lie hi-U a weapon. She bad just before hoard quarreling in t1 e street , and hesi'atcd about going out alone , though she certainly had no cause for fear at that hour of the day. The shot wss fired just as slio crossed the street , and She hastened on to get out of harm's way. When she returned homo a little later she found her mother in the condition desznbod , lying en the bed in the huuso , and having ascertained the extent of the criminal carelessness of the party she had seen , she has tened to a store near by and notified Officer Gorman who made an ineffectual search for the man. It is said thai there were two men together and thai they both fled on firing the shot. Mrs. Warwick had on a valuable golc watch and chain and it is possible the intention was to rob her , although she aaya the man she saw was rather goot looking and very well dressed. It is a very singular affair. HQflG HIMSELF. A Nemaha County Merchant's Horrible Fate. Caused by Had Luck in Buei ness Ventures. The community about the two quie villages of Asplnwall and Nemaha Oity , Neb. , was startled Sunday after noon about 4 o'clock by the unexpeot ed announcement that William Tid row , a prominent and respected merchant chant , had committed suicide bi hanging. Aspinwall is situated about throe miles southeast of Nemaha City , and Mr. Tidrow had for many years been a resident of Nemaha county. He owned the only store in Aspinwall carried a largo stock of general mer chaiume , ncd consequently his trade was very large. Anticipating a stil larger trade this winter , he orderec gooda bayond his financial ability. The result was a closing out by his creditors , principally those at St. Joe. This seemed to bear heavily upon Mr. Tidrow'a mind , and evidently brought on the wretched thought of suicide. About one week ago the first at tempt to take his owa life was maio by taking a heavy doae of morphine , but a physician was procured in time to save his life. After the first at tempt ho has assumed a state of set tled meloccholy the result of which was a second successful attempt ol self-destruction. Juat after dinner on Saturday , he very quietly left' the house and made hts way to the chicken house , where it appears , ho had made arrangements for suicide by hanging. Mrs. Tidrow , his wife , happened to go to the coop on an errand , a little later , and found her husband suspended , a frightful spectacle , and quite dead. With rare presence of mind she rush ed into the house and secured a knife , but on returning and taking a second look at her husband's ghastly body , aho fainted away. No alarm was { ivon until Mrs. Tidrow became con- cioUs again , when of course all aseii- ; anco was useless. The entire surrounding country is very much shocked by the sad event and the loss is regretted by innumer able friends. The coroners inquest was held yesterday and a verdict found in accordance with'the facts. .a. New Company.
