The Abbo della Bocci relates a story
of a small privateer , With forty or fif
ty men , having on hoard some hives
of bees and beiut ; pursued by a Turk
ish galley mounted by EDO seamen and
soldiers. As s on as the latter came
along eide the crew of the privateer
mounted the rigging of tbeir own
ship , taking the hives of bees with
them , and dathid them down upon
the deck Of thtir enemies. The Turks ,
as.onishcd at this novtI mode of war
fare , and unable to defend themselves
from the stings of the enraged bees ,
became KO terrified that they thought
of nothing but how to escape their
fury , when the crevr of the email ves
sel defended by masks and glovesfldw
upon their their enemies , bword ia

sistance.
The same Abbe tolls another anecdote -
dote in regard to beet : When the
Turkish Emperor Amurath , in the
siege of Abba Grce a , bad battered
down part of the walls and was about
to take the town by assault , ho found
the breach defended by bee ? , many
hives of which the inhabitants hud es
tablished on the rums. Although
they nere tbe bravest soldiers of the
Ottoman Empire , they dared not encounter -
counter this fcimidable line of de
fense , and refused to advance.
Lesser also relates that during the
confusion occasioned by a war in
Thurugia in 1525 a mob of peasants
attempted to pillage the house of the
minister of Blende , who , having in
vain employtd all of bis eloqueucatn

Strange Sulolde of Two Lovers.
Hew York Sun.
PABIS , November 80. A remark
able duel has just taken place , which
for its hovelty and fearful termination
has set Parisians ago ? .
Two brothers , Augusta and Andre
Berni , tbe former aged 40 , the latter
83 , both employed in the great glass
manufactory at Saint Denis , became
enanmrod of AdeleYergeri , & cook at
La Villette. Adcl * Yergcri is de-
icribed at a young woman of plain ,
simple habits , who had , by dint of
hard work and economy , managed to
save a few hundred francs. In ap
pearance Adele is but an humble rep
resentative of France , but ahe it mod
est and retiring , and not given to re
torting to balls and theaters. She
formed the acquaintance of the two
brothers at a bapti.m. Both , It ap
pears , from the very first , began pay
ing her attentions.
Adele Yergeri received the visits of
the brothers with much sang froid.
To her it was amusing to see first
one , then the other , come puffing and
blowing m hia deiire to be the first
to greet her. Neither would give in
to the other , and Adele had to escort
them both our , as neither would leave
the other BO' e with her. S > terrible
becirae the jaslotuy hot cen the two
brothesa that they w. uld not speak
with each other , ll had. however , to
be settled at last Adele Vergeri
threatened that Unlexa hot coutbhip
ctaied to be mixed with
hilred she would hsve. to'ask the
brothers io dosisfc from calling
upoh her. The brothers met. They
had parted with Adele Vergerl , and
both confronted each 'other in one of
the great wine shops of the Saint
Denis quarter so Appropriately called
by Zola Assomimoir. " They glared
at each other , and their friends saw at
once that mischief was browing. They
finally motioned to each other to with
draw to K table. They spoke iow , bnt
excitedly smoked quickly , and the
bine smoke of their pipes was hot.
"A duel 1 Tes , a duel 1" Thia was
distinctly heard , and then the brothers
beckoned to Jules Remi and Alfred
Ponlier , friends oHhoirs. They had
decided upon fighting a duel , bat not
with svrords or pistols. It Waf to be
a duel to the dOath' .
two bottles of rum , brought from
the cellars of Jacques Barbier's As-
sommotr de Saint Denis , were put on
the table. Two tumblers were eet by
the side of the bottles , and then this
contract was made by the brothers in
the presence of witnesses.
' * It is agreed between the brothers
Aguste and Andra Berni to drink rum
nntil unable to drink any more. The
first who succumbs will consider him
self beaten , and surrender all claim to
Adele Yergeri. "
The contract was signed , the bottles
tles , tipped , and the tumblers filled.
At first the men drank slowly , but as
tbe liquor began to excite tbeir brains
they iairly pouroi it down their
threats. At the ninth glass Augaate ,
tbe younger of the brother ; , gave a
yell of pain and fell senseless to the
floor. Andre Berni then arose , and ,
with a smile on his face , turned to
leave. Hardly had he reached the
door of the cabiret when he threw up
his hands and fell senseless. He was
quickly carried to the Hospital Tenon ,
bnt died shortly after reaching it , of
concussion of the brain and paralysis
of tbe heart. Auguate Berni , crazeo
by the rum he had drank , recovering
from his faint , ran rnadly through the
streets , and has not been seen since.
Adele Ver eri , the humble cook of
LvVillette , when she heard of the
death of Andre and the diaippear-
anco of Auguste , merely shrugged
her shoulders.
