the winter with a special eye to this
particular market day. "
"Leeman , " said I , " 111 RO ! "
"Nonsensel" said Lseman.
"But why not ? ' ' said I. "Old
Pomp is as gentle as & kitten , and I
know every inch of the way. "
- "But there are the Red Swamp
woods , that desolate stretch of three
miles , with never n house on either
bide of the way , except the deserted
cabin where the old ncp.ro hanged
himself twenty years ago , " argued my
mother.
"Who cares for the Red Swamp
woods ? " said I valiantly. "I never
was afraid of frogs and whipoorwill ; ,
and I am not going to begin now. Li ) ,
will you go ont and help me harness
early in the morning- - "
"Oh , I wish 1 was going , too !
Can't 1 go , Kate ? " criedLil , my hey
den young sister , with'her eyes glist
ening with delight at the idea of any
thing unusual.
"Stufll" cried I , imperiously. "Of
course you can't ! Hasn't Pomp a
heavy load enough without your nine
ty pounds of mischief loaded on ? Be-
rides , you must stay at home nnd take
care of mother and Leeman , and finish
the chintK curtains for the big west
chamber , for Colonel Hay rosy come
home any time now. "
Colonel Hay was our city boarder
a gentleman who had boon recom
mended by his physicians to try the
Fresh , pine scented breezes of the
Shawaugeenta mountains , and whom
our rector had recommended to the
Icy Spring farm.
Wo were not.rioh. although mother
and Leetnah had managed the farm
economically and well since father's
death , and the weekly addition to our
income would be something worth
conaideriug.
The idea of a city boarder was very
plessant , too , and ley Spring Farm
was a very lovely npot , although wo

that.So
So , after a little , I coaxed mother
and Leeman to consent , and the next
morning Lil and I were up long be-
'ore daybreak harnessing old Pomp
tfnd getting ready for the day's jour
ney.
ney.By the time the "red , level light of
he rising sun touched old Pomp's
; ray mane with radiance , I was driving
.hrongh . the Red Swamp , whe're th'e
maple trees , from which it took its
aame , were all aglow with crimaon
dossomt , and the thrushes and robins
called to one another with flute-like
notes.
notes.Well
Well , I managed splendidly. I
mew where I was going to when I
started. Isold the&ix barrels of rus-
ets to the man who kept the Park
Hotel , for $4 apiece , and that was
more than Leeman himself anticipated.
"Be careful you don't get robbed ,
aow , " said the man , as he watched me
> ut the bills into my little portmonaie.
"Robbedl" ssid I , with a laugh.
"Why , who should rob rael"
'Oh , I don't know" said the land-
ord. "There's always tramps and
mrghrs around. They're B crop that
don't belong to any particular season
of the year. "
As I turned away I did not notice
t at the time , but it came back to me
if tor ward , ts things do come back

I colored a little , and thought to
myself : "Well , he'll know me the
next time he sees me , " and then for-
; ot all about it , for I had mother's
> lack bombazine to match , and Lil's
pring hat to buy , and some dinner
: hiua to select , and the doctor's pre-
cription for Leeman to fill out at the
iruggist's , so it was well on to seven
rhen I turned old Pomp's head home-
rard , in the [ suburbs of the town ,
ffith a feeling of elation that was quite
Dardonable , when one considers my
nexperience In the marketing line ,
ind my exceptionally good success.
The sunshine was warm , and still
m the highroad , and I was rather glad
is first wo came to the Red swamp ,
ivliere the birds were all silent in the

' 1 suppose that yu are going foi

"No , " siid he , "I am not going to

I asked no more question ? , I didn'l
like the idea of & man's shrouding
himself in mystery in that sort of way ;
and , a3 I glanced around once more , s
sudden revelation came across me like
a blazj of light.
It was the same man that eyed me
so keenly on the steps of the Park
Hotel.
Then I remembered my mother's
words of caution , Leeuisn's reiterated
exhortationrjand the landlord's friend-
'ly words of warning.
And , in spite of it all , I had delib
erately thrust my siliy head into the
jiwa of danger. There was only one
thing for me to do to get out of the
scrape as well as I could.
I cast about in my mind how to do
this ; and presentlj.wiih beating heart ,
I dropped a littla parcel of blue
ribbon into the road.
' 'Oh , " I cried , checking up Pomp ,
"I've dropped my parcel. Would
would you mind getting out after it ? "
"Not inthe leaet , " said the ntrnnger ;
and he climbed laboriously out of the
wagon.
He had scarcely set his feet on the
ground before I laid the whip on old
Pomp with a will , and rattled away
over the long straight road at a pace
that seemed positively marvelous tome
mo and Pomp both.
So no left our passenger behind in
tha middle of the Red swamp. I could
see him standing there , blank and as
tonished , the sole picture in the long
perspective , as I ventured to look
bask ; but I only whipped Pomp the
harder , and never let him 'bate his
pace till we werd well out of Red
swamp.
'Tve out-geiieraled him , " said I to
myself , "and I've saved Leeman'g § 24
I'm sorry about the blue ribbon ; but
it was only a yard and a quarter , after
all , and I can trim Lil's hat with
something elao. "
They were delighted at my prowess
when I related my adventure at home.
Leeman declared I was a capital little
market woman ; mother Shuddered at
tbo dtsperato tramp alone-with 'me in
thu Sffamp ; Lil declared that I was a
huro.
huro."Wasn't it a good idea for Kate to
drop the blue ribbon and send him af
ter it ? " said she ;
"Kate wa ? a goose ever to let him
get into the wagon , " eaid Leeman ,
knitting his brow.
"Kate mustn't go by herself such
i long distance again , " said mother.
And I drank my cup of tea and
rested myself , and went out after-
nrard to see the new brood of darling
little yellow chicks'which old Speckle
iad brought off the nest during my
ibscnce.
I wasun my knees in the henhouse ,
taeding them with scalded meal from
the palm of my hand , when I heard
mother calling me from the house.
"Kate ! Kate ! Come up at once.
Colonel Hay has arrived.
"Colonel Hay ? "
I started up , looking with blank
Jismay at my calico dress and the
meal stains on my hands.
However , there was nothing for it
jut to obey ho summons ; BO I went up
'a the house. A scrt of blur seemed
; o come across my eyes st I' entered
: hb sitting room and heard mother
iay :
"Colonel Hay , this is my eldest
laughter , Kate. "
And then the blur cleared away and
[ know the man I had twice before
leen that.day the pale , tired traveler
vhom I had recklessly abandoned in
: he middle of the Red Swamp.
"I I beg your pardon , Colonel
Elay ! " I cried impulsively. ' 'J
; hought you were a thief ! "
The burst of laughter that followed
: rom every inmate of the room tifect-
lally scattered all embarrassment.
That was my adventure. And Col-

There seems to ba great anxiety and
impatience on the part of the people
to tee the revised edition of the Bible ,
thct they may see' what changes have
been made. The trouble with most
people will be that they tion't know
enough about the old Bible to recog
nize the change when they see it. We
heard a man say that be considered
this unauthorized meddling with and
changing of the sacred book little less
than blaspheiny. And at the time of
making the remark he was hunting
all through the book of Job to find the
quotation : "Make hay while the sun
