They have demonstrated by the defeat - feat of Content , Locke & Co. , that hireling bulldczsrs , subsidized , edi- tsrsj political pimps , oceans of baer , barrels of whisky , bogua tickets acd piles of greenback * have been impotent in stemmfng the popular tidil wave ajplnst monopoly domina tion. They have put the seal of con demnation upon the packing cf repub lican primaries with U. P. demo- ora'.s and repeaters. They fcava demonstrated that men who Dies betrayed a public trust omnot ba elected to responsible posi tions by procuring a nomination by a convention. Nearly ono thojasand re publicans have risen spontaneously against the outrageous suppression of honest party sentiment and cast their votes against candidates foisted on their party by Thurston , Hanlon and Hitchcock. Audacious and insolent , these woald-be leaders spurned all efforts of reputable republicans to se cure a delegation for the legislature that would represent the republican masses. Coutant and Locke were forced npon the convention under whip and spur by accalamation but the people refuted to ratify. The sturdy , honest farmers of Douglrs county met in convention three days before the election , and by joining bauds with the worklugmen and mer chants of Omaha they have overthrown the wicked rmd corrupt combination that sought to force npon them repro soatatives that wcro under the con trol of the monopolies. " This was no Email achievement when it is berne in mind that Dr. Millerwas in entire8ympathyandactivo ] collusion with the TJ. P. republicans , that an unlimited amount of money was &t their disposal , that an army o : strikers , bummcra and repeaters wera in the field working night and day , that beer and whisky was dispensad for the Union Pacific candidates ir ovec- hundred saloons , that over three hundred bogus democratic tick' ' ets had been smuggled into the billet boxes , that the registrars were playing into their liande and in several wards hundreds of voters had been dis < franchised and lastly that ssores o men were intimidated by fear of losing their places , and hundreds whipped in by the party lash and the bugbear of a democratic legislature. Notwithstanding the disgraceful warfare waged against hitn by factionists - ists within his ovru. partv , onr good " friend , E. K. Vslontine , "did not run far enough behind his ticket to make any ono feel bad. Hall county gave him her f ull.party vote. Nearly all the counties in Nebraska did likewise. The entire republican ticket was olectcd in Donglaa county for the first time in many years. Church Howe was re-elected sena tor in Nemaha county by an increased majority. [ Grand Island Ihdcpan- dent. dent.Whti Whti a difference a paltry postal clerkship makoa in the political views of the editor of the papsr from irhich we clip the above paragraph B. Not very long ao no paper in Nebraska was more outspoke a in its opposition to political atool-pigeous of the U. P. than the Grand Island Independent. To-day it fawns upon them and be slavers them with fulsome praise. As a matter of fact "our good friend Valentino" ran behind his ticket * in every county. In Douglas alone he is nearly eight hundred votes behind the state ticket. In Blunders county he runs behind one hundred votes. In Washington county ditto , and when the returns are all In ho will be from 4000 to 6000 votes bshind his ticket. Douglas county did not elect the entire U. P. ticket , and Church Howe wasn't re-elected sen ator by an increased majority. Howe is elected to the house , but ho ran way behind his ticket , and only got in because Nomaha rolled up a tremendous deus republican majority. So much for the veracious Grand Island paper that has gone back on the people for a paltry postal clerkship and a little U. P. patronage. Ir Soneral Garfield is at all. dis posed to favor Nebraska with a place In his cabinet , his choice , in our hum- bio opinion , will fall upon General Mandorson. No man in Nebraska en- joya General Garfieli'a friendship to such a degree , and wo venture to as sert that 110 man west of the Missis sippi has shown as much devotion to him. General Mauderson was the only representative man from Ne braska at Chicago who was a Garfield man from the outset , and even when Garfield did notcppear to h&ve a ghost of a chance for the nomination ho made urgent appeals to the Nebraska delegation < o turn in for Gsrfield. General San derson , It will be remembered , was very prominent on the listfrom which President Hayes made choice for the war office on the retire ment of Judge McCrary. He enjoys a national reputation and is eminently qualified fir such R position. The oaly reason why Mr. Itamsoy was given preference over him was the fact that Nebraska could not match Min- ne oa ( in the electoral college and na tional convention. Under the new ap. portionmont Nebraska will take higher rank among the republican state ? , and General Garfield will doubtless RIVO due weight to this change in makingup his cabinet. THE Herald Is greatly ajitat ed on the subject of local sewerage , and comes to the conclusion that our sewer is practically worthless. Three weeks ago tha Herald had a glorious oppor tunity to devote its energies to the democratic press as politic.il servers , but Dr. Miller was silent and aided his contemporaries ia the dFssemenation of political filth. CABINET making still continues , and if General Gatfield doesn't make a goad selection , it won't bo the fault of the editors of this nation. It seems generally understood tht Secretary United States senate to a reappoint- mcnt to the treasury portfolio. Gov. Foster ia prominently mentioned for the secretaryship of the interior , and Congressmen Levi P. Morton of New York , is said to be Senator Conk- ling's cholca for successor to Secretary Sherman. J. STERLING MORTON started the ) oem for his silent partner-in the obby and the Omaha U. P. organ wi.h a democratic brand , pramptly endorsed Morton'a candidate for sec retary of the interior. With Morton and Miller as sponsors , Mr. Hitch- eoak's appointment into GarSeld's cabinet , is a forgone conclusion. By : ho way , what did Morton and Miller say about Garfield lately , and what support did the candidate for Schurz's shoos give Garfiield at Chicago ? IOWA tOILBD DOWN. The cause of the dispute was foul abuse of ono of the republican candidates by the dem ocratic journal. On the 1st in Pickwick , near Ot- tumwa , Joseph Genochfe and John Aus'in , both driving wagons at the time , got into a qnarrell about who should back in first against the ride- walk in front of a blacksmith. Iowa is the banner state as usual , and drops 80,000 majority at Garr field's feet. The re-election of Shelby M. It appears . . that . Fair . . _ , of bonanro amo , has captured the Nevada le is ature , and will probably succeed Sharon in the senate ; but Senator Dorsey announces that Fair will act with the republicans if elected. P. T. Barnum of circus fame was beaten in the race for a seat in the Connecticut sanato. This is a bad year for the Barnums. Let them be embalmed and laid out with the mer maid. She was a Birnum fraud also. Mr. Evarts will return to the prac tice of the law at the close of his cabinet term. He has been a mem ber of the firm of Evarta , Southmaid & Choate during his term. The firm is one of the leading combinations at the New York bar. The Minnesota legislature stands , so far as it is possible to ascertain thus early after the election , as fol lows : Senate .Republicans , 80 ; democrats , 11. House Republicans , 8G ; democrats 1C ; greenbackors , 3 ; independent , 1. Old "Pig-Iron" Is once again at the fore. The Philadelphia Times say a : "Judge Kelley , the father of the house , and the ablest and most poten tial protectionist in either branch cf congress , is chcsen to his eleventh consecutive term , and his majority grows as hia terms increases. " The republican majority in New Ycrk state in 23,010. Barnum and John Kelly may howl as much as they can , but the democracy , in the lan guage of Bob Ingprsoll , has gone to the place in which that eminently pious gentleman does not believe Perhaps that is why Barnum and Kelly howl so much. Notwithstanding that Garfield car ried the city of Philadelphia by a very largo majority , something like 20,000 , yet the McNames , republican , candi date for comptroller is beaten by the democratic candidate 13,000 votes. The people had a fancy that there was altogether too ranch McNames ring in local affairs , and they gave his can didate for an important office the go- The republican candidate for gov ernor of Tennessee , Mr. Hawkins , has certainly been elected. The re publicans also elect three congfcis- men , being a gain of two. They have elected forty-seven republicans to the legislature , and only lack three votes to have a majority on joint ballot. Five of the legislators-civet are col ored men. The Wisconsin legislature will stand as follows : Senate , 25 republicans , 8 democrats ; a sembly , 77 republicans. , 23 democrats ; majority on jcint bal lot , G9. The candidates for United States senator to succeed Senator Cameron are the Hon. Philetus Saw yer , the Hon. W. Keyes , ex-Senaior Howe , the Hon. Horace Rubles , and several dark horses. Senator Cameron will hardly be a candidate for reelection tion , The democrats In Alabama "are ma kiug a desperate effort to deprive the Hon. Wm. M. Lowe , republican- greenback congressman elect , of his 2,000 majority. Thair flimsy excuse is worthy of Gnrcelon. The law of Alabama prohibits pictorial designs upon ballots. Lowe's tickets were headed "V11I. district , " the demo cratic strict constructioniats insist that Arabic numerals are "a pictorial de sign. sign.On On the eve of the election The Hart ford Poit announced Mr. James E. English made a cash subscription of § 25,000 to help himself and party out in Connecticut , acd that the national democratic committee added § 31,000 , through the influence of Barnum , who had control of their barrel. As the sequel shows- , the Connecticut English didn't realize any moro on his invest ment than did his namesake in In diana. There is every probability that Mr. Johnston and Mr. Murphy , republi can candidates for congress in the First and Fourth Arkansas districts , are elected to congress over the pres ent representatives , Messrs. Poindei- ter Dunn and Thomas Gunter. The republicans are confident of the suc cess of their candidates , and some of the democrats are willing to concede their claim. Well , this ia much bet ter than was expected from Arkansas. Mr. John C. New , chairman ofhe republican campaign committee of In- dianahas announced that he will bo a candidate for the United States senatorshig. The other candidates who have already begun a canvass for the place are Gen. Ban Harrison , con- Rressmsn Orth , the Hon. Will Cum- back , and Judge Graham. There are several who think they may 'turn up as the dark horse , among them be ing the Hon. John M. Butlar , Judge Fnzer , the Hon. JohnH. Baker , and Judge R. S. Taylor. It Is stated with some positivenoss that two of the three "readjustor" congressmen elected In Virginia have already declared their intention to act among the supporters of Mr. Garfiold's government. This , If verified , will place four of tha representatives from Virginia on the government side of the house , and fiyo on the side of the opposition though it is not unlikely that all three of the "readjuster" members will act with the govern ment party , making the division five to four. The crowning act of President Hayes' administration would be and onttht to-bo the negotiation of a treaty with Germany , in which a firm stand should bo made opposing the Euro pean ptinciplo of "once a citizen al ways a citizen , " \\hich implies a restriction npon individual opinion not in accordance with our belief or action. The United States has been made what it is by foreign immigra tion , and our adopted citizens ought toreceivo the same projection from our government that its native-born citizens do. This they do not receive. eignty exists than Germany. The archives of the embassy at Berlin , are filled with the cnmplainta of our adopted citizens , who have returned to their native land that they nave been threatened with expulsion from the country or enforced enlistment in the German army. The German emperor now eays that Al sace : and Lorraine shall not be includ ed in the operation of the present treaty with the old North German Confederation. This leaves us with out an extradition treaty , so far as AhacQ and Lorraine are concerned , aud places our adopted American citi zens of Alsace-Lorraine birth In the position of a German citizen if here * turns home and is found in his prov ince. One of our citizens now lies in Ji i a German prison. Ho is wrong fully imprisoned. Germany refuses to release him. As the case now stands , cur government is powerless to act ; but in duty to the men who , as much as any , have made this coun try what it Is , it ought to insist upon his release , and then negotiate a treaty which will prevent the possibility of such occurrences , or else demand sat isfaction from the German govern ment for any such acts.
