A fad cape came to our notice at
noon to-d y. The west-bound train
had , among otver passengers in the
Pullman coach , a Mr. Joe Davis and
his family , consisting of a wife and
six pratiy and healthy looking chil
dren , the youngest not over six
months old. Mr. Davia.was engaged
by n raining company at Hancock , a
Lake Superior town , and fifty days
ago to-day ho , with four others , were
upon a scaffolding thirteen feet higb ,
loading a veisel with coal. The scaQ"-
olding broke and precipitated the four
men into the water with the coal on
top of them. Mr. Davis fell on the
dock of the vessel , striking his back
on a chunk of. coal and breaking off a
small piece of the back-bone. Ho
was picked up and found to * > e par-
ilized from the waist down.
The probability is that he-
10 will never recover. He is going
to Hastings with his family to live ,
and expects to buy a piece of land
and have it farmed. He is quite
cheerful notwithstanding his misfor-
, uue and talked freely to our reporter.
Us wife has some relatives living
about 40 miles from Hastings , but
they do not know of his coming. He
las evidently been a strong , hearty
man and it looks pitiful to see him
, hus prostrated for life.
