Some Valuable Thoughts Concerning Human Hap piness and Timely Suggestions About Securing It. Synopsis of a Lecture Deliv ered by Dr. Chse. Craig Before the Metropoli tan Scient fie As sociation.- The free and Jndcp'ndent thought of this age accepts statementa only where they are proven to be truth , while the development of mental power seems equally great in every other department of lifo. The valua ble inventions of the day are counted by thousands. Tno increasa of scien tific study is universal. The spirit of inquiry in all fisld ia so marked as to cause COUSIEST ON EVEP.T SIDE , while people seem investigating and advincing in every direction vrhich can help them morally , mentally or physically. This ia specially true of the human body and everything which concerns it , and the truths which the people have found even in the last fifty yeiM , are simply marvelous. Hovr really ignorant soma cultured and supposeably scientific people were only a few years ago , as compared with the presentjday , may be better under stood from a few illustrative facts. A prominent write- prepared an elabor ate esaay to prove that steamships could never cress the Atlantic , raid his pamphlet was issued just in time to be carried by the firat tteamor that went to Knglind. People once be lieved that the heart was the seat of lifo and health. It is now known that this organ is only a pump , simply keeping in motion wiiai other and more important organs of the bodv have created and transformed It nn"s once supposed that if a person felt a pain iii the back , the liver waa de ranged ; if a pain camn in the lower chest the lunga were affected and can- sumption was near , it is now known that a pain in the b ck indicates dis eased kidneys , whila1 troubles in the lower chest arise from a disordered liver , and not imperfect lungs. A severe pain in the head was once thought to come from some pirtial derangement of the braint it is non- known that troubles in other parts of the body and away from the head , cause headaches and lhat only by re moving the cause can the pain be cured. It is a matter of j PRIVATE HISTOKT that General Washington wa bled to death. HU last illness was slight , and caused piincipaily by wearinesj. A physician was called who 'bled him copiously , ' Strange to eay , the pi- tient no bet'er. Another dDstor was called , who again took .IWHV " a large : amount of the \ital fluid. Thuj in ) succession four physicians drew away the life of a great man who was in tended by nature for an old ae , and who prematurdy died murdered by malpractice bled to deith. That was the ago of medical bleeding. " The speaker then graphically de scribed another period which came upon thepeople , iu which they assigned the origin oi all diseases to the stomach ach , and after showing the Wsity of ; this theory , and lhat the kidneya and liver were the causes of dueasf , nlid that many people are suffering from kidney and liver troublts to-day who do not know it , but uho should know it and attend to them at cnco , con linue-d : ' Lot us look at this matter a littla moro ckseJy. The human body is tha moil perfect and yet the most : delicate of all created thing * . It is capable of the greatent rtsU'ts and it s liable to- the greatest disorders. The .ightest ciuses sometimes seem to throw its delicate machinery out of ; order , while the mcst simple and commonsense mon-sense care restores and keepi , them in perfect condition. When it is remembered that tha amount ol happiness or misery wo are to have in this world is dependent on a perfect body , is it not strange that simple precautions - cautions and care are not exorciaedi This is one of the most vital questions of life. People may avoid it for the present , but there is certain to come a time in every one's experience when it must be faced "And here pardon me for relating a tttle personal experience. In the year : 1870 I found myself losing both in : strength and health. I could assign no cansa for the decline , but it con tinued , until finally I called to my side two prominent physicians. After treating me for some time they de- lared I was suffering from Bright's ' iisease of the kidneys , and tlut they ould do nothing moro for me. At his : time I was so weak I could not raise my head from the pillow and I FAINTED BXPEATED1Y. My heart beat so rapidly that it was frith difficulty I could sleep. My , lungs were also badly involved ; I jould retain nothing upon my stomach , There the most intense ptius in my t i : ! sack and bowels ctused mo to long For death as a relief. It wss at this nh iritlcal juncture thata physical longing h 11 felt ( and which I moat firmly Delieve was au inspiration ) caused mo o send for the leavts of a plant I had nice known in medical practice. Af- Bl or great diffiulty I at least secured Bltl hem and began their uao in the form tlT f tea. I noticed a lessening of the tlii ? iiin at once ; I began to mend rapid- iie y ; in five weeks I ws able to be iiII < ibout and in two months I became IIla orfectly well and have continued to laa his day. It was only natural that a uch a result should hive caused me C ! o investigate most thoroughly. I tla isrefully examined Gelds in medicine tlti lever before explored. I sought the tiai of order aud disorder ai auae physical , aim lappinoss aud pain , and I found the aihi .ianeya and liver to be the governors , hidi rhoee motions regulate the entire ays- di em. " ta After describing at length thu of- ices of the kidneys aud liver , and heir important part iu life , the decor - w or wont on to say : "Having found this great truth I aw clearly the cause of my recovery , 'ha simple vegetable leaf I had used ras a food and restorer to my well- m .igh exhausted kidneys and liver. It in ad come to them when their lifo was inI'i ' early gone and by ita simple , yet I'idi owerfnl , influence hid purified , trengthencd and restored them and th &ved mo from death. Realizing the ar teat benefit which a knowledge of arI'i ' Ilia trnth would give to the world I I'iai ai egan in a modest way to treat those fflicted , and in every case I found the aigt gtav HAPPY RE8ULT3 rhfch I had experienced. Not only his , but. many who were not con- clous of any physical trouble , but ho , at my suggestion , began the use the remedy which had saved my fe , found their health steadily im- roving and their strength continually hi icreasing. So universal , where used , hiyc as this true , that I determined the yc hole world should share in its re- yce ilts , aud I therefore phcod the sh rmula for Its preparation In tha th nds of Mr. B. H. Warner , of iochester , N. Y. , a gentleman whom had cured of a severe kidney dis- ise , and who , by reason of his per- mal worth , high standing and nami berality in endowing the astronom * mi al observatory and other public en * mibe terprisc8 , has bocoma known and pop- uhr to the entire country. This gan- t Ionian at cnce began the manufacture of the remedy on a most i-xten-ive scale , and to-day Warner's Ssfe Kid ney and Liver Cure , the pure remedy that saved my life , is known and used in all parts of tha continent. "I am aware that a prejudice exists toward p-oprietary medicines , and that such prejudice is tco often wall founded , but the value of a pure rem edy is no l ss because it is a proprie tary medicine. A justifiab'e ' prejudice exists toward quack doctors , but is it right that Ihisprejudice should extend towards all the quack doctors who are earnestly and intelligently trying to do their duly ? Because Warner's Safe Kidney and Liver Cure saved my life before it came a proprietary med icine , is it reasonable to-snppoae it ll not cure others and keep still more from sickness now that it is sold with a government stamp on the wrapper ? Such a theory would be childish. " The doctor then paid some high compliments to American science , and closed his lecture as follows : "How to restore the health when broken and how to keep the body per fect and free from disease must ever be nun's highest study. The one of the greatest revelations of the present day has been made in ascertaining the true seat of health to be in the kid- nej and liver , and scientists now ad mit , aud I can but feel that the diV covery which 1 have been permitted to make , and which I have described to you , is destined to prove the great est , best aud most reliable friend to those who suffer and Ion ? for happiness - ness , as well as to these who desire to keep they ni\v po es. " Siliin * and Dressing t'oaitry. I' ' h an acVn iwledgod fict that ouHry ftheu bled to death is tth'tti1 in fl h then uhen etMn led. 1 hen the question is how to cause them to b'eiid to death and not dlsfi/jnre ihem in any way. This ran be easily done by opening the beak of tbe fowl , then with a sharp pointed knife make an incision r > t the bick of the mot , which will divfde the vertebra and cause im- med'uto death , after which hnng the fowl up by the legs till the bleeding coises , then rinse the beak out with vinegar and water. A nice plump turkey most people \ve a weakness thU way is what on lany a tarrn the young people of tha ousehold are now looking forward to produce. Turkeys in a fevr months -will nut be the least remunerative de partment of the farm-yard , when properly cared for and fed. In the 1 majority of places in this country 1 turkey rearing hardly pays for the large outlay in trouble and other ex pense. But they are undoubtedly profitable to raise when reared on pro fitable principles , which meins plenty of food , care , end exercise. Tnere is a gro-.t difference of opinion in regard to fattening turkeys , but experience hB shown breeders that the beat way to net the greatest number of pounds of fleah is to feed the birds all they want to eat , right from the ( ime they hatch out till they are ready for the market. While they are running at large is the time to develop them. They un doubtedly get much food in the fields , the shattered grain , the 'hoppers , " worms , etc. , but then they must be supplemented hy daily or twice dally feeds of grain at the barn. Turkeys cannot bear confinement , especially when in small flocks or singly , and should never be confined longer than a week or ten days before killing. An ordinary rail pen is one of the best for the purpose , for they like to be on the ground. Atthis time feed princi pally on cooked or soft food , and plenty of milk , if you have it to spare ; pive occasionally hard whole grain , to keep the flesh solid and firm. The Bignt of Way. Delrolt Free Prc8 There wag a Ddtrolter among the trio of officials rho passed over the route of the Bu'ter Koad to secure the right of way. In some cases farmers cheerfully signed otf ; in others money had to bo used ; but in one case the committee found a most determined opposition. The road would divide a wid'iw'a farm ; and she vws independ ent , obstinate , and defiant. SheTtnew tha ; her.hay stacks and barns would be destroyed by tprkg , her live stock run over by trr.ius , and her slumbers disturbed by the rattle of trains ; and nhe wouldn't listen to argument. In this emergency one of the committee suid : ' Madam , do you know of any wid ow in this neighborhood who would be willingtoboarda gentleman connected with the construction of our road ? He is a widower , and prefers to board with v a widow , " 1 'No , I don't know as I do. Is he a nice man ? " "Splendid man , ard has money in the bank. We want him to perman ently locate at this point ; and are ilt hopes he will take a wife. It is unfor tunate that " "I never did take boarders , " she mused , "but " "If you only could , now , I'm sure you would not regret it. He to ex tremely fond of children , and would be like a father to your little ones. " "Perhaps I might , to accommodate " 5 you. "Oh , thanltsl He would be here next week if this righi-of < * ay matter rVas decided , but as it is ho may not " "Do you agree to pay damages if pen burn my barn ? " "Of course we do , . " 'And I will probably get used to the noise1 ! " 0 of courael In a week you won't mind il. Fact is , you will sit up jvery night till midnight , anyhow , ifter the gentleman arrives. " ' * 0 no , I shant , I shall never love igain ; but if ho is a nice man lovrs children , why , I don'tknowss lougl t o stop your road. 1 guess I'll eignl Nebraska Republican Platform. 1. We regard the recent seizure of the polls and fie wholesale robbery of the franchises of tha republican citizens of Al bama , surprising in the magnitude and jffrontery of the crime of all former efforts > f the party under the Tweed plan in New STork , and the Mississippi plan in the south , as a fair specimen of democratic method and a forecast of democratic do minion in national affairs .that should in- ite every honest man and taxpayer in the country to most earnest endeavor to de feat the party of brigandage and frand at the polls in November. 4.
