During State fair week there might hive been seen on our streets and on tbe grounds of the association an old croiie , industriously begging a pitt ance of whomEoevcr came in her path- Tray. Meanly clad .and apparently destitute the old woman , who was of Italian nationality , won considerable sympathy and not a few were the uickles and dimes thrown in to her pocket. From one of hir countrvmen who is an old ac quaintance if hers , wo learn that at the close of the fair ehe had accumu lated no less than $140 in hard cash , one hundred of which she forwarded to h r BOD , who is said to be a well-to- do fruit merchant in Burlington , Iowa , where he owns one or two brick blocks and other property. We have often heard wonderful stories of the success and cccumulative powers of the Italian professional beggar , but this n the fiist instance that has come under our OKU jurisdiction. The woman is reputed well-to-do , and her iaiu8 ; are acquired in this manner , which is much easier and more profit able a business than many men of brains possess. The moat un fortunate aspect of the case 13 that it throws discredit on the profession , which includes many des titute and deserving members , but at the same time it illustrates the lucra tive nature of the business , which In Borne countries numbers its votaries by the thousand. A DIAMOND OWA'EB. -Another case , somewhat sim ilar , came under our personal observa tion not long ago. A man who was to all outward appcirances a physical wreck , canvassed the city with a docu ment setting forth as a fact that ho was injured twenty years ago In the mines of Cornwall. After having re mained hero for some limo , boarding at an obacmo boarding house on Sixteenth street , ho left for other fields. Ona night before his departure , ho gave a little reception to his friends , at which our reporter had the good luck to drop in. There \vaa music nud feasting , and when most of iho guests had retired , the proprietor of the house persuaded the party to exhibit his wealth , which was in the ehapo of several score of precious stones , concealed in a belt worn about hij person , and which must have been worth several thou sand dollars. LateTueaday evenimjperhapselev < n- o'clock , as a well known grccer of this city was on his way to his home in North Omaha , having closed up his store for the nlqht , ho met with a lit tle adventure which he says hes taught him an important lesson , never to car ry his monyy about with him at night. He had about $1100 on bands in the evening which he had drawn from the bank to make a payment with this morning , and with visions of safe bur glars In his mind he thought the safest plan was to take the money home and sleep over it. Because he was so foolish he does not wish his name mentioned. When about half way home , he observed as he proceeded quietly along , that he was not alone upon the streets , a man walking a short distance in front of him and another rather clcse at his heels. He thinks they must hava come out of an alley aa he did not notice either until their footsteps broke quite plainly upon his hearing. He felt a little uneasy , but thinking his alarm was without cause he walked faster and then slowcruntil he ascer tained beyond doubt that the two men regulated their pace by his own. Ho had neither knive nor revolver and for the life of him couldn't get his eyes upon sticker etono to pick up. His hair assumed a perpendicular al- attitude and he would have let bis national bank bills go at a dis count. Not deeming it safe to at tempt to run or dodge up an alley he finally hit upon a happy expedient. He saw a bright light burning in a residence along his route , and opening the gate , as if at home , he walked in to the yard and through the front door with the greatest of eaap , and closed the latter upon his enemies with a si.h ; of reliefi Ho readily ei- plnined the situation to the family whoso house he had invaded , and was accompanied the rest of the way horn by a man , a dog and a double-barrollei shot-gun. This morning ho learnec that theEo two men had loitered abou his store all the evening , on the out side , and that they were ill-favored desperate looking fellows , who woul undoubtedly not have ecrUpled at do ing him bodily harm to secure th money , which they mils ! haVe fleeli him draw from the bank. But is Saved by a "Visiting Physician. " Quite a little sensation was created among the inmates of and vialtora at a house of doubtful reputation in the third ward Tueaday , shortly after 8 o'clock , by the attempt of a young girl to end her life by taking poiaon. She had , it appears , been depressed in spirits for sometime past , and ht-.d made frtquejit threats of- self de struction , which her companions thought were not mere idle words. A kind of watch was therefore kept over her , and last evening when she made an excuse to go to her room , 'she was followed and detected in the act of pouring a dose of arsenic down her throat. The cries of a friend brought the whole household to her assistance , with the callers aa well , and among the latter was one whcse knowledge of medicine enabled him to pursue the proper course at once to save the girl's ' life , and his success was such that she is to-day as weil as over. The gttl's name is Jennie Liwrence and she came to Omaha from Ringold , Ga.onlya short time ago. She is not over twenty years of ago , is a pure blonde with blue eyes and hair of the golden color of sunshine. She has evidently not lived a hard life for very long , and in fact it is claimed , that ehe was , although an inmate of the house , not a woman on the town. She was accompanied to this city by a young man who soon after deserted her and ever since she has lived in comparative seclusion from thoao around her and used only the remnant cf money left her by her male companion , In which , notwith standing her condition and his heartless - loss conduct , she persistently refuses to recognize her greatest enemy. Her money being well nigh ex hausted and not seeing any way open to her for a return to her home , tl.o unfortunate woman no doubt thought that her pleasanteat path lay through the valley of the shadow of death. Well m'ght ' she exclaim : "If there be any majesty above , That has revenge in store forperjur'd love } Send , IieaV'n. the swiftest ruin on hishead , Strike the destroyer , lay the victor dead ; Kill thd trminplier , and avenge ray wrong , lu height of pomp , when lie is warm'dand young Bolteii with thbHder , let him1 rtisn alpngj Antl when in Ihe last pangs of life hB lies , Grant I may eland to dart him with my eyes ; Nay . after death Pursue hi * spotted sou' , and shoot him as life flies.
