The rpbbet then started and ran into some willows by the roidside , fullowed by Wood- raff , whom he eluded , and returned tt ) the staie , where ha went thtonjjh the box. Wmle doing so he wa > constant ; ly calling to his comrader.is ly ing on the opposite side cf , a.s mage , cold in death , to come mid help hinl. Receiving no answer , and nnegiuiug that eometaihg was wrong , ha hastily rifl' d the box , overlooking , in his huiry , si.me 2800 in coin. _ Detective Hume , in Wei's ' , Fargo & tb.'s employ , recently visited the spot , and exhumed the body of the dead road-agent , who had been buried where he Ml. Hume examined the f ice of tha highwayman , but failed to recognize him , and a search of his clothing failed to reveal anything but a mask- , which was made of a piece of gl E-d oil-cloth. Whatever Hume discovered during hia visit that could throw any light on the identity of the rohbt-rs he kept to himself Until he returned to the city last Saturday , when'ho laid the matter before Chief of P. lice Crowley end Capt. Lees , to wlu m he stated that , from informa tion iu tiis possession , he had discov ered that the deceased and his companion had been living in a house on Minna street. Ou Saturday evening , Detectives John Cofley and W. S X ties visited the house on Minna tt oct , and , in one of the r.oma th y took j ojeestion of a \fcl.te , hAicful , and other effects be- lon n g U > the highwaymen. Three uore opened , and a gold watch and chain and other articles were found. Photographs of the deceased , whosa name was Frank A. Dow , alias Keefe' , W. 0. Jones , were found. Detective Silvey and Officer John Wallace were then detailed to occupy the room and await future de velopments. The latter , having a CIES in court yesterday morning , was lelieved by Ji'hn ' Cuffey. About 11 o'clock , while Coffey was in the not of overhauling a val se , he was inter rupted by the tiogu g of the door bell. Opening the dour of the room suffi ciently to give them a glimpse of the front coor , they saw it opened by the lady of the home , who recognizad and spuke to the person .who had given the summons He stated that he had come to effect a change of clothing , whereupon fha invited htm to enter. As ho came abreast of the room where Coffey and Silvey were hiding , they quickly stepped out and grasped the unsuspecting individual , whom they fYrced into the room , where they searched him and found a pistol , § 2500 in cold coin , secreted in a belt around Ins waist , two certificates of deposit for § 300 on the First National bank , and 150 shares of Tip Top Mining company's stock. A roll of blankets which the fellow had with him at the time was opened and another pistol found. This weapen was identified as .one stolen from n box of one of the eteges that had been lobbed. The man was then handcuffed and taken to the cen tral station , where he was subjected tto a rigid and lengthy examination by Captain Lees. In response to in quiries , ho said that his name wss Lincoln Anthony Sharp , a native of 'Missouri" and aged 34 years. He re fused to tell where he had been within - ; in the past six weeks. The captain .has the information that within this period Sharp visited the city. His .dead associatKhe knew by the name of .Frank , 'Keefo-or Keith , which he was not sure , and sajd that he made his acquantance somewhere about Au burn , where he was looking for a job. The watch was found in hia room , he siid , was given to him by Keefe about two or three weeks ago. This watch has since been identified as one that was stolen from a man named E. B. . Shaw , ngent for Cutticg & Co. , on thn 19th of June ! when a stage was robbed on the Bod-o road. Sharp , during his eiami > a * > > . fre quently asked to have a c H t made against him. He was lur1sed that his anxiety on this so ire vt d be re lieved ere long. To the questions re garding his previous occupation and whereabouts , he said that he had principally followed mining In White Pine , Pioche and other cmps. The money found upon him'he said was the proceeds of his eavinjjs. He had been on this coast about twelve years , and had worked for Turley Roe , John Allison and others. He and Keefe had money on deposit in the San Fran cisco Savings Union , and "had drawn it out some time ago. His dead com panion never deposited any money un der the name of W. C. Jones. In Sharp's valise was found the morocco ma-k which he wore in his robberies , and a number of pieces of th * same material from -which it is made. The following is a partial list of tha rob beries inaugurated by Keefe and Sharp on May last : (0n : the 15tb of this month th y stopped theTorest Hul ( Placier county ) Bt gwtfd the pasMngen , Vrftfed for i Bodie. Thev collected six gold | watchfs and jewelry from the pis * I senaerj , valued at § 300 , and also S300 | in coin from the company. On June ' 14th they encountered a stage in the I me p'aco and robbed the company of $20 , not molesting the passengers on this occasion. They came before the pul lie again on the Oth of Aug- tt-t , c rry ng off a booty of f 1,500 belonging to the company , and . relieved a passenger of a j | 200 watcb. Oa the 31st of August they appeared once more upon thfr the scene of their labors. The Vir ginia stage wa midway between Bodie and Virginia Ciy wheu the driver was accosted and commanded to "hslt. " Contriry to fxpetatinns , he did not obey , but dashed off. The robbers thereupon fired shot after shot at him , but the driver escaped Unhurt. On September 2 , as the stage was boUbd from Carton to Bellvillej it was robbed of $50 and some packages of nominal value. Considerable of the property recovered from Sharp has been identi fied by the paranhs who lost it during the robberies It is stated that tbe amount of money realized by Sharp i and Keefe from their various depre dations aggregates over $6000 , besides large quantities of mining stock and other valuables BGO3. A TIUtFlDTHAT HAS Bi3EK TO GREAT IMPORTANCE IN TfliS COtJNTEY. Qcclicatl Commercial. The egg traffic of this country has risen tb an impottarico of which few comprehend. The aggregate transac tions in New Yoik city alone must amount to $8,000,000 per annum , and in the United States to $18,000,000. , A single firm in that line of business east handled $1,000,000 worth of eggs during tbe year , lii Cincinnati , too , , the traffic must be proportionately large. In ttuth , tbe great gallinace ous tribe of our country barnyards contribute iu no small degree to hu man subsistence , eggs being rich in nutritive proper tit * equal to one- half their entire weight. Goose , duck and hen eggi are the pdnoip" * ! kin H prodticed in America , We1 have notfc irig , however , lika we are told used to be found in Madagascar , or have been found there , the gigantic woa eg ? , measuring thirteen and one-half inches in Extreme length , and holding eight ftnd One-half quarts. One Of tlieie birdi , with a single effort , might supply a modern boarding house with omelets for a day. The perishable nature of eggs has naturally detracted from their value as a standard aiticle of diet. The peculiar excellence of eggs depends upon freshness. But lately the pro cess of crystalizing has b on resorted to , and by this process the natural egg ia converted into a delicate amber tint , in which form it is reduced seven eighths in bulk compared with tbe barrelled egga , and retains its properties for years unimpaired by any climate. This is indeed an achievement of sciencb' and mechan ical iiige'uUlty , and has d most im portant bearing Upon the qiieition of cheaper food , by preventing waste , equalizing prices throughout tha year , and regnlatmg consumption. Iu this form eggs may be transported without injury , either to the equator or to the poles , and at any time can be restored to their original condition simply by adding the water which baa been artificially taken away. The chief ege-desica'ing companies are in St. Louis and New York. No salts or other extraneous matters are in troduced in the process of crystaliz'ng ; tha product is simply a consolidated mixture of the yolk and albumen. Immense quantittet of eggs are prc- letVed in tbe spring of the year by liming. Thus treated they are good fet every purpose except boiling. It is a common trick for aoma dealers to palm off egi3 to treated fir fresh , so that impreition is easily practiced In the desication prccej , however , the the difference becomes apparent , as from four to five more limed eggs are tequired to make a pound of fggs crystalizcd than when fresh are usea , and egga in ihe It-aat taiuted will nut crytt-lize at all. Sume of the most experienced egg- dealers decltre that there is no piotii in raising poultry to compare with producing eggs. A single hen will lay from twelve to fifteen dozen eggs par annum , selling at an average of eighteen centa per dozen , and the birds thus occupied can be housed and fed for less than fifty cents for the whole period. In the enit the price per dozen is much higher. Here we buy them by the dozen Step into an eastern produce establishment , and they will sell o much for a quar ter of a dollar. There is no reason why the crystaliziDg process should not become quite general , and egg production stimulated as never before , and th < Pfood supply receive large accession from this source. The already great and in- creating consumption of oga in England and .France shows growins appreciation for this kind of fo < > < 3 compared with any other. In Lima , Peru , eggs sell at $1 a dozen equal te § 4 per pound cryatalized. It Is thought this new proreoaforpreserving for utilization of the industry of our hens and pullets may be acceptable , as wellrs beneficial , in a business and domestic point of view. A Curious Animal. , Los Anftlei Herald , September 18. A lusus natures of most astonishing kind reached Los Angeles yesterday , from Arizona. It was no leas than a remarkable combination of a jack * rabbit end a hog , The color was that of a jack rabbit. Its feet were those of the hog speclep-while ita ears o'a the other hand , was those of a jack rabbit. Its tail was .about half an inch long. It weighed from seven to 'eight pounds , being about eight inches in height. When angry tha gray bristles along his back would stand up to a height of from two and a half to three inches , porcupine fashion. Hog and rabbit are both powerfully suggested. It is an undoubted curi osity , and was sent to young Somers of this city by an aunt living in Tucson.
