"Ndver. But I was mighty near
being caught up once , and the only
way I escaped was by being mistook
for my brother Jim. " ilere * the

mind went back to the serio-comicsl
adventure. Tom Wood , or "Uncla
Tommy , " as he was known in General
Leu's cAmp , had never been with the
army in Flanders , but he had liarued
their habits all the same , and was
perhaps , as wicked a hunter as. ever
shouldered a rifla.
"But I'll tell you about how I liked
to have been caught. It was late in
December , and it occurred to me that
I would take my Christmas frolio by
making a little ecout out to my home
in Randolph county. We were camp
ed at the Warm Springs , and had
nothing to do in campand I felt lone
some like. As Christmas draw on I
got to thinking about my old woman
and the children at home they were
rtway iijslde the lines of the enemy
and I thought that Christmas would
appear more like Chris tic M to them if
I could unexpectedly drop down
among them. So I shouldered my
old gun and awap I went , out through
Pocahontas and down into Randolph.
I got along first rate on my way out ;
saw no Yankees ; slipped around their
pickets ; saw my family , and after en
joying myself for a season started
back.
.4"0f course I kept out of the way
of aU the settlements , and stuck to
the mountains. I stopped at nobody's
house unless I knew them to be true
blue Southerner. One night I came
t.o the Greenbrier river , and juit as
dark came on a heavy aleet set in. I
was cold , tired and hunsrv , and the
only house where I could fine shelter
was the house of old Billy Johnson ,
whom I knew to bo the most ultra
union man in all that region. I had
no personal acquaintance with him ,
and don't think that ha had ever seen
me , so I concluded to risk myself un
der his roof that night anyway. It
was my purpose to give him a fictitiocs
name , for I felt pretty sure that if ho
discovered that I was Tom Wood , the
rebel scout , I would not live to _ aoe
daylight. Mustering up courage , and
helped akne by the wet and cold , I
sought refuga under Johnson's roof ,
and was hospitably received. While
sitting by the fire warming myeelf ,
Johnson kept looking into my face
very earnestly , when all at once ha
arose from hia scat , approached , and
standing directly in front of me , says :
'Ain't your name Wood } '
"Here was a poser , and-1 thought
I was caught. I knew that if he reo-
osn'7ed me it would do ho good to
lie about it , so t owned up and said
that was my name. 'Well , ' said he.
' hia is Brother JjrSmj "vVood , ain't
itl' 'fhis relieved me. You see he
had mistook me for my brother Jim ,
and seeing how k was humored the
mistake , though Jim is a blasted eight
uglier man nor hlei But I wasn'l
standing on looks then ; the circum
stances didn't admit of it. 'Well ,
reillvj'cayahe , 'Broeher Wood , lam
glarl to see you. I ain't seen you since
tno camp-meetipg in the hill , nigh on
to twenty years ago. ' And lie took
my hand ahiiheok , it like he was glad
to see me. But I could hardly keep
frVim iBiigh'nn in his face at being
taken for a class loader. You sea ,
Jim is a Mtthodist and a loader in
the church , and so is Johnson , and
that is how hfi called me 'Brc-thet
Wood. ' And then he sot down and
talked over old times and the camp-
meeting in the hills , and as the old
man was willing to do moat of the
talking , I wai willing for him to do it.
° I got along very well until we setup
up to supper , when Johnson called on
me to say grace. I had done many a
hard day's work ; had been on many
a"long ecout ; have been in some mighty
hot Splits ; but I tell you hnuestly ,
boys , the hardest and hottest work I
ever hare done was to get out that
blessing in a genteel way. But this
was no time for flinching , so I got
through with it. Everything moved
on smoothly until bed-time came
around. Brother Johnson put the
Bible on the stand , snuffed the candle
and asked mo to lead in family wor
ship. I had broken tbe ice by asking
the blessing at the supper table ,
so I read a chapter in the book ,
and kneeling down offered up
the first prayer of ray life. By jings ,
it was a good one. I didn't forcet to
pray for the restoration of the Union
and the destruction of its enemies.
May be it was answered. I had a
good night's rest , and when I left in
the morning felt better than I ever
did in my life. In fact , boys , I believe -
lievo it does a man good to pray a little
once in a while , even if he is forced
to it. I mean to do more of it there
after. But that is the way I escaped ,
by being mistook for my brother Jim. "

the old scout's face , and the chuckle
toundcd louder and deeper as he

lished for-centuries. The latest and
moat astonishing fact that has been
developed is that there is a scientific
mode of kissing. The day when a
young man could grab a young girl
around the neck nnd gobble a kiss in a
rough but comfortable manner , is
past. The time irhen he could circle
her waist with one arm , get his thirl
bosom full of hair oil , and piroutte his
lips every square inch of her counten
ance , ia no more. Science has pro
claimed againatit , and man shudders ,
but remains silent. The old style of
kissing , which sounds like some tear
ing a clap-board off a smoke house is
now considered bad taste , and consequently
quently ia rapidly going cut of fash-
inn , although the majority of girls ad
mit thai science baa cruelly destroyed
all the comfort of a long-lingering ,
heart-thrilling kissand causes them to
express no little regret , at the change.
The improved scientific method of
kissing is to throw the right arm Ian-
quidly around the fair one's shoulder ,
tilt her chin up with the left hand til ]
her nose Is pointed at an angle of 45
degrees , or rather until it has an as
pect resembling the bowgpaitof a clip

that is only done by a lazy set who
will only earn money when they can
pick it up. Agriculture is our great
induatry , and I simply want to intro
duce this new variety because our land
supply h getting limited , and we must
raise a hundred and thicty bushels
to the acre or pause. "
Daggett got his wheat and will sow
hia two bushels broadcast over the
state.

A New Zealand paper chronicles the
recovery of a number of sheep which
had bee'n lost for seven years. Mr.
Goueh , of the Thames , brought with
him from England four prize Dorset

were for a tme : running in the Kau-
weranga valley , and then Suddenly
disappeared. Ynars rolled on , and no
traca of the little flock was discovered
until lately , when Mr. John Little ,
the well known prospector , intimated

in attempting to capture a ram ,
which was of enormous pjopor-
tions , and covered with & tremendous
coat of wool. Mr. Gough offered the

head for all they could recover. The

search , 16 enormous sheep were fotind
