HOW JOE HARKER GAVE VANDERBILT A FOUR-YEAR OLD COLT AND BECAME RICH. Chicago Tribune , 'Who knows anything aboy the reported sale of St. Julien tn Joe Harker nnd Charlie Green ? " said one of a party of horsemen who vrera Bit- line in the Jockey club rorms the other day. Nobody seemed to possess any in formation on the subject , and one per son doubled whether Harker . .would feel like putting § 50,000 of his own money into n trotter , although he owns srveral for which he paid from S10.000 to 820,000. "He ought to be willing to do It , " said a gentleman , "for every dollar he has is the result of owning a trotter. " Being naked for an explanation , the gentleman proceeded as follows : "Way back in the time when Pa cific mail was in its glory , .Too Barker was clerk in a broker's office on New York a'reet , New York. Even then he loved a trotterand whita on an ex cursion to Orange county picked up for a small pride a four-year-old colt that had wonderful speed. Not long after bringing him to New YorfcHar- ker drove out out to the road-house , where Oommodore Vanderbilt always stopped When out { or a ride , and Boon after his arrival the old nnn dtoVe no and sat down forhisaf lernoon's smoke * . When he had finished and wag ready to start for the city again , Harker had his colt brought down the road behind the commodore' ' i nd when the old man's team was going a pretty good clip pulled out and went byhim. Once in front , he pulled up , and the com modore was Boon on even terms with him. The railroad king's eye had de tected the ease with wht6rf the young iu an had passed him , and no sooner was ho near him again than ho asked whose horse that waa. " 'It's mine , ' nid HarSer. " 'What is itl'from the commodore. ' "Only a four-year-old that I bought up in Orange county. ' 11 'Is he for sale ? ' " 'No , ' " 'Now , young rrtan , I want that Howe , and if you'll fiend him around t6 my stable I'll buy him. ' " 'Can'tsell' . " 'W611,1 said the commodore , get ting rather interested , 'isn't there , price you will put on the hcrssl' it i " 'No ' way I can get him ? ' " "Yes ; if you will give me a pointer on Pacific Mail I'll send the horse around ' 'The commodore looked at th& young man in admiration of his in tense cheek. Ho was getting nngry as well as interested , and said rather gruffly that he would pay a good price for the horse. " 'That won't buy him , ' was Har- ker's rejoinder. "So they jogged along in sil nc all the way down town , the commx re noting the easy gait of the o l , and feeling more and more that ha must have him Finally ho tola Harker to send him arou d , and ths horRSTeach- ed the stable t : > at evening. Tno com modore drove him single * nd double for a cou [ le of weks , and finally sent for H rker. The young man was promptly on hand at the appointed time. " 'I want to p y you for that horse , ' said Vanderbilt , taking up a check book. ' 'He can't be paid for in that way,1 was Harkor's reply ; 'you know what I said. ' 11 'Vanderbilt looted at him steadi ly for a minute , and then said : 'When I want you I will send for you , " and Hatker left and went about his busi ness. ness."It was nearly three taonths before he heard from Vanderbilt , but one day word came for him to call at the office. He went and found the old man there. ' 'Now' s < ud the commodore , 'I suppose that it I told you anything forty men on Wall street would know it inside of on hour ? " " 'No they wouldn't , ' replied Hark , er. 'That Isn't my way of doing busi ness.1 /"Well / you buy 1,000 shares of Pacific Mail , " and the commodore re sumed his writing. "Looking up in a few minutes ho found Harker still sitting there. r " 'Why don't you go and attend to that ? I told you to buy 1,000 shares , didn't 1 ? ' " 'Yes , ' said Harker.'but you might as well have told me to buy the New York Central. ' " ' ' ' 'Haven't you got any money ? " 'No ' , sir. " 'Then what were you driving such a fast horse for ? ' " 'I got him cheap. ' " 'Can't you got a friend to buy the stock for you ? ' " 'Yes I suppose 1 could get forty of them if I could prove that you told me to buy the stock ; but that isn't my style. ' "This reply struck the commodore forcibly , and , when telling the story afterwards , he would allude to it with great unction. The result of the talk was that he sent an order to one of his brokers to buy 1000 shares oi Pacific Mail for Barker , and ho ( Vanderbilt ) would be responsible for it. When there was a clean profit of $100,000 In the deal , Vanderbilt told HarkeMo sell , which he lost no time in doing. The young man's secretiveness had so impressed the commodore that he took Harker into his employ , gave him a desk in his private office , and it is doubtful if any man enjoyed Vanderbilt's confidence to the extent that Joe Harker did from that time until the old man died.1 * Creamery Butter. A recent New York circular eays : Creamery butter has been very plenty and of very irregular quality. It ap pears that nearly every dairyman , east and west , who keeps a considerable number of cows , and who uses s patent brands his butter ' ' creamer , 'creamery. And he has a perfect right to do so. His object is to have the name help to sell the butter. The result will be that the name will no longer be distinctly representative of fine goods , and that the butter will have to stand or fall on itsmerits , whatever it is called. There is a good deal of the western creamery that is no better t' an fine wet tern dai ry packed and sells no higher. Some of the western creameries have been trying the experiment of carrying the cream instead of the milk from the farms to the creamery. This ia networking working satisfactorily , beciuso the setting of the milk for the rising of the cream at a prooer temperature and under proper conditions is one of the most important things to observe in making find butter , and can be at tained much better at the creamery than on most firms. There are apeo ial marks of creamery in this s ate and at the west of establisned reputation for making fancy goods which sell a ehado above our outside quotation. Between the extremes are many sbadss of quality and price. The above accoftls with what we have frequently said about creamery butter. The remarks about carrying and cream are deserving particular at tention. The cream gathering business ia in its Infancy , and thus far has labored under serious ditadvantages. While the churning and marketing o : butter are most important items in tha manufacturing of good butter , the best , skrll cannot-make and marke' ' good butter from poor cream. Anc thia ia just what it has been attempted to do. Much of tbo cream u raased in the common -waj ia pina eat ia the collar me Many of the patent setters and coolers are defective in themselves and in order to any inraiura of succea must be nipnaged with an Bmnnnt of labor which is not economical , and the business is slighted. The business of cream gathering to be R success must be carried on with a uniformity of ap paratus used , nnd that adapted to the business. _ There is no reason why a f jrraer with five or ten cows should not produce just BS good cream ( and better ) than can be raised at the croamTy from transported milk , for then this can bo done with almost as little labor aa is required to properly cool milk for transportation to the creamery. We have great faith in the cream gathering business , properly managed. Individuals are making a success of it. If some are making failures it is no wonder and no cause of discouragement.
