N. Y. Cor C n innUl Fnquir r.
The undtrnear departments in the
lirte itorcs of Broadway and Sixth i
avenue ore usual'y in the charge of !
female clerks , but not invariably , and
it is not so vtry rare to see an un
blushing man displaying these inner-
moat girmenta to fair but equally un
blushing customers. The imported
garments , aa a rule , are simpler than
those of American make. The French
sacque-chemise , with a puckering
Etring around the neck , is shown in
heavy percales. Fine acallopped
poim edge the neck and sleeves , and
there ia more cr less nf needlework.
French nightdresses are now made
wilh box-plaits in the back instead of
a yoke. Several box plaits holds the
fullness on the shoulders , while the
front is shaped like a square or point
ed yoke , which is made up ot fillo
tucks in clusters , wilh perhaps some
embroidery between. The killingest
thing in the way of night gowns is to
be worn in the anytime. Forgive
that Irishism. What I mean is that
a sort of Frerch p-gneirof muslin or
cambric , full enough to conceal the
figure tolerably we1 ! , is worn by women
in their own rooms instead of a com
mon form of wrapper. It ia a moat
ravishing garment , and , mark my
word , the wearers will not bo able to
resist the temptation to let the men
admire them in it. There will
bo nothing improper in that
proceeding , for the article coveis
ill a arms and neck completely , and
ia only seductive by leason of ita
whiteness and clingineas ; bu.t there ! s
a step further ttat Vn6 designers in > -
tend our fashionable women to take.
In the afnrea I see white muslin morn
ing garments without sleeves , elabor
ately trimmed with lace and embroid
ery , and calculated to "mash" the
masculine beholder on sight , provided
the protruded arms be anythlbg to
br g of. It is & wise woman that
knows her own arms , and some
scrawny ones are bound , I suppose ,
to be exposed to pity , by means of
this garment. To return to apparel
which only husbands , of all men , see ,
perrmi me to say thst new chemises
are cut to fit pretty snugly around
the 'Waist , neck and wrh's.
rihis gives them a shapeliness that
ia new and attractive. They are but
toned on the ehouldersj eO that there
need bo 110116 of the old fashioned
h i s ; rg . vr the head. You simply
t ich y < .m s'.oulders ' , ami down the
chemise drops to the flcor. This is
i ban y in dressing , because a change
cm be nude without danger of mus-
i fiirg the hair. Conservative women ,
with old fashioned notions about
, Govern ? t'ie arms warmly , have
j e.3 * 11 c " "t enough not to in-
i i 10 with li dress-sleeves ; but
thoae who intend to display the arms
t in evening drees leave out the chemise
j s'eeve altogether. Still others do not
! 1 have the shoulders
even Straps over ,
but wenr a cheruiae that ia no more
than a muslin cylinder , reaching up as
far as the arm-pit , and depending on
the embracing corset for support.
Very dainty underclothes are the
rage. Some are made of white Chi-
| man silk , and muslin is made by pro-
, fu-e embroidery to be costly in the
1 extreme. Night gowns are of odd
j shapes. The princess pattern , however -
' ever , preferred for such very elegant
I night-gowns as are not so much in-
tendtd to bo s'ept ' in aa for morning
wrappers. Elaborateness of trimming
in the Wiiy of exquisite embroidery
and fine laces relieves the garments
of the plainness which commonly per-
ing momu g calls is , nevertheless ,
Bomo-Ah'it startling to persons of a
prudish leinini ? . Fine cambric , soft
pero leund sheer jiainsook are tha
mttturisls , and all down the wearer's
front , fioni ol in to toes , is possibly a
mas * f Hborions needle-work. Not
a touch of color ia to be worn with
theae night-and morning bewltchers ,
and aren't they angelic though ?
Flannel petticoats , too , are now
objects of great elihnration. They
are msde of two breadths of the finest
and softest fhnnel , reaching almost a
yard in depth , slightly gored toward
the top , so as not to give too much
fullness aro'und the waisr , and set tea
a wide cambric or linen band. Silk
embroidery is a favorite ornamenta
tion f jr flannel petticoats ; but the
most highly fashionable finish is lace.
Le-s elegant petticoats are edged with
ruffljs of fine and soft torchon lace ,
with a lining of blue or pink
satin. Colored flannel petticoats are
already common. Red and blue are
the fivorito o 'lors , with gray and
green , embroidered with rod , coming
nest. Many women embroider their
own ekirts with cr-wels. For persona
with much breadth of their own , pet
ticoats are fitted closely around the
hips. Whatever fu'lnoss they desire
to add is accomplished with a Spanish
flounce. Qailted petticoats become of
a single plain thickness near the top ,
and in these particulars there is shown
n t tendency to give up ultra-close-
fitting garments.
In drawers there are novelties.
The new imported article has no bslt ,
but is provided instead with a casing
and tapes at the waist. This gives to
this much despised and ordinarily un
shapely garment an unaccustomed
rakishness. The Swiss edges , a strong
cotton lace woven In open work em
broidery patterns , are much used for
iritnminR drawers. The stocks of
ready made drawers are largo and va
ried Absolutely new things in this
line are knit drawers of silk and wool ,
very elastic , as they needs must be to
fit the lean and the fat with the de
sired precision. They are of various
colors , not excepting the finest tints ,
and look as though intended for circus
performers ; yet I am assured that
they are meant to be worn in private
life like any other drawers.

Eggs In Wintur.
Unless fowls have Tvarm and crm-
fortable quarters , together with a
good supply of nourishing food , they
will not lay to any great extent during
the winter months , and as this is the
very time of all the year when eggs
are most appreciated and bring the
best price , it pays to lay in a utock
whf n they are both plenty and cheap.
The following receipt for preserving
ocgs is taken from the chird report of
tha United States Butter and Oheesa
association. While it is intended and
and uaed to a great extent bj- large
dealeis and shippers of eggs , it can
also be used by private families who ,
with but a little effort on their part ,
cm have a supply of Iresh eggs on
hand at all times :
To ma'se the pickle , use stone lime ,
fine salt and water , in the following
proportions : One bushel of lime , eight
quarts of salt , twenty-five teu-ouart
pills of water. The lime must be of
the finest quality , free from sand and
dirt lime that will alack white , fine
and clean. Have the a.alt clean and
the water pure and sweet , free from
all vegetable or decomposed matter.
Slack the lime with a portion of the
water and the salt. Stir well three
or four times , at intervals , and then
let it stand until well settled and cold.
Either dip or draw off the clear pickle
into the cask or vat in which it is
intended to preserve the eggs. When

render them difficult to clean when ta

importance that thu pickle be kept

they should be laid out and all the
lime cleaned off befoie packing.
When the eg s are carefully
hashed , they can be sat up or

irates. They should dry quickly , and

Vats built in n collar around the

wide , arc usually considered the best
for preserving egca in , although many

Uses for Flax fatraw.
It is hoped that the time will soon
come when there will he a market for
flax fiber in this country. At present
flax is grown , except in a few locali
ties whore there are fl-tx-mills , en
tirely for the seed. The straw is gen
erally thrown away , and is sometimes
burned. This straw may bo employed
for a number of very useful purposes.
In the south farmers have a little ap
paratus which they set up in a yard
or field , by means of which they
make very good ropes out of cotton ,
hemp and flax. Ropes made of flax
straw are useful for securing young
trees to stakes , for attaching vines to
po'sts , or trellises , or for tying about
be used to excellent advantage for
putting about trunks of- trees in order
to protect them from the heat of the
sun. Twisted somewhat loosely , and
wrapped about rose bushes and tender
shrubbery , it afiords excellent protec
tion.
tion.Flax
Flax straw mskea excellent packing
for ice. But a comparatively small
amount of it is required. It is clean ,
easy to handle , and not as liable to
mold or rot as the substances that are
usually employed. A piece of ice
taken from the house and wrapped in
flax straw may bo carried a long dis
tance with but very Itttlo waste Many
farmers do not put up ice because it is
difficult for them to obtain sawdust or
tan-bark for packing. Flax straw
makes good bedding for all kinds of
stock , and it in especially good for
hogs. It is excellent material for
mulching , and there are few things
superior to it for mulching strawberry
vines. It forms a close sort of mat
ting on which the berries can ripen
without Lcing spattered with mud.
Most kinds of stock will oat fhx straw
after they have become accustomed to
usa it by having small quantities fed
at a time.
Cheap Poultry House.
D. Warren describes a cheap poul
try house in poultry yprd : I stick
down a row of polei , say two feet
apart , the length I wane my hen house ,
next I put down another row not as
high as the first but parallel with
them , and the d stance between them
to be the width I want. Where I
want my windows I leave out a pole
or two , according to the s'za of the
window , I fasten my roosts from one
pole to another across the hen house.
The ends are made the same as the
sides , leaving Bpo.'e for the door. I
then cover It nil over with factory
cotton , that has bean water-profod ,
and line the inside with tarred paper ,
and I have a hen-ho'ise ' that is warm
In winter and cool in summer , and the
vermin never trouble me.
The factory cotton or unbleached
sheeting cm be bought for eight cents
a yard , and can ba made water-proof
for five cents a yard. The tarred pa
per costs two cents a pound ; so breed
ers , after they have decided how large
they want their hen house , can figure
up the cost.
