THE MAN ffHo CLAIMED TO BB THE INVESTOR - VESTOR OF THE TELEQBAPH AH OF AVAESTHESIA. Sen- or ? EUQ. - Dr. Charles Th'rnai Jackaon , the physicitt , died in Somervilie , Mars , on Sunday , after A 1 < n < illuees. It is many yca-s s'noa he rotind to a Ufa of qi ct a.d 8ucusio ! : ! , but bis name is st H farnilUr to old newspaper readers - ers from his controversi ? ! with the Pnf. Simuel P. U. Mor > e and Dr. } V. T. A. Morton. JJ is dispute with Prof. Morse waste to the priority of the discovery of tha application of electricity to telegraphy , In Octobtr , 1832 , Dr. Jackrn and Prof. Morse were fellow passengers in the ship Sul-'y , from Europa to Ihh city. During the voyage Dr. Jackson wa $ experimenting with an electromagnet - magnet and galrmic baferies. Prof , Mu o and other passengers were nil interested in the expiri- inents , and Dr. Jaskeon averred that hs then demonstrated how electricity could be used for crryinp ; on corress pond-nee. It 1834 Dr. Jackson ol..imei to have conatruc'ed and sue- c'S5fally onerated a telegnph on the plan that he described in the voyage on the Sul y. The machine that he tti en made could not bo utilzed : in an extensive scale , owing to the difficulty of getting a steady and continuous current of electricity. The invention of the sustaining bittery by Daniel ! in 1837 obviated thu difficulty. In the 1-Jtter year Dr. Ja-kaoa and Prof. Mcrae began their famous can- troversy over the priority of discovery , which lotted for many years filsny volumes of evidence on each side were adduced , and law suiU over paten's were bo un in evf iral onurts Dr. Jackson always averred that hg was the first djscov- erer of iho American teleg-aph that waa patented by Prof. Morto in 1840 , and many men of science believed his claims to'bd well founded. After h's telegraph experiments , Dr. Jackson pr.tctised medicine , whirh he soon gave up to devote himtelf to geology , ile waa state geologist in Maine , and afterwards held the.famo position in Rhode Tsliiid and New Hampshire. HP was the dincoverer of the copper nnd iron fields of Like Superior , which he explored in 1844. The controversy with Dr Morton above refoneu IPj was cms iLe du covery t-f ether as an arTreTtn t jr 'tbj duoivery was madeat the time Dr. i Jnckfton win practicing rnedfctiuiJfTut ) ! was not claimed by hlrr. nt the time. \ His claim was that in 1834 he found j Hy experiment that an alcoholic solu tion of chloroform applied to a nerve made it insensible to paid , He had previously _ experimented with pro- toiide ( t nitrcgon , with less satisfac- t-ry ratul's. In 1841 he tried the ef fects cfpuro sulphuric ether , mingled with atmospheric air , upon himself end inhaled it until ho loit all contciouBneis , This experi ment he p-onounc d entirely suc cessful In 1842 ho inhaled ether to allay the pain he Buffered from an ac cidental iihalation of chlorine. Thh Ud him , he afterward said ) to declire "that a surgical operation could bi perfcrmed on a patient under the in fluence of Bulpuuric ether without him any rain. " Dr. Morton , however , appears to have first spplied ether m an operation performed by him i'i 1846 , and to have experiment ed with itBima years previous to that time. The respective claims of Drs. Morten ard Jackson for the credit of the discovery of the anaesthetic were supported by hosts of phyeiciars and men of sc'onc ? , and the controversy was wa ed for years with great bit- tcrnesa. Tlie French academy , which had offered a prize of 5000 francs for the discoverer , divided that sum equally between the two claimants , holding that Dr. Jackson discovered etherization , and that Dr. Mcrton first applied it in surgical operations. Dr. Morton refused to take the award made to hingjind the Academy afterward gave him a gold medal. Dr Morton strove for 5 ears to have hia c'aim ' properly recognized. He became utterly bankrupt , and his home was sold for debt. Congre-a waa importuned to grant him § 100,000 aa n national t atimouiil , and hun dreds of physicians and others sgned the petition. Dr. Jackson , on the other hand , sent to congress a peti tion signed by 143 physicians of Bos ton and vicinity , certifying that the riscnvery was exclusively his. Dr. Mutton's petition was defeated , but in .1 test suit agains1 a hospital mrgeon who had applied other accord ing to his method he pained his point , the United States court sustaining hia claim. Dr. Jackson stM had his adherents , who contended that he , and not Dr. Mor ton , was the discoverer , and the con troversy went on until Dr. Morton died. It is said that Dr. Morton's death was earned by excitement over an article which attempted to show that ho was not the discoverer of an- coitheeia. The citizens of Boston erected a monument tohls memory , bearing the inscription : * 'Wm. T. Mo ton , Inventor and Revealer oi Arirosthetic Inlmlilalion. " This anc other recognition accorded to Dr. Morton caused great disappointment to Dr Jackson , and ho dud at the of 75 , fouling tl'r.t he had been deprived prived UTICB of the fruits of years o patient study -md ii vestigation.
