CM , thirteen in number , procured the

cax , a5Jowicg tbtsm i > vifIt the Indian
village on C.itarfc : crrek , inhbiled
by the Ava Snpnis , a 'ribe if Indiana
numbering , nil t < H , 200 sou's. ' The
parly wort from Williamson valley to
theB'g ' Wiibams range , and thence to
Pine Spring , fine they found every
indication of an eli sea bed , iho gravel
and rocks being r ucd and cmucth ,
B'milar to those in the ocean bed.
FtomPine Spring the party directed
their cjurso to the Ava Eupai
village , which ia reechsd by
defending from the table land down
one of the roughest trails ever traveled
by men for a distance of fourteen
roi'es , dripping 8000 feet. At places
along the trail we are told that it in
not over twenty inches wide , and
winds around the perpendicular walls
of sand stone that looms above for
hundreds of feet , while on the ether
Eidn , dark deep canyons exist , hun
dreds upon hundreds of feet deep ,
where by one false step or move , man
or beast would be sent to eternity.
With great care and good luck , ten of
the party succeeded in reaching the
villdg , three of their number retura-
ing rather than ran the gauntlet in
pwsing down into this awful , yet
marvellous , crevice in the earth.
The Ava Supu'a practQ9 ! polygamy ,
each male having about three wives.
They have 1000 acres of farming lands
which is described ns being of a yel
lowish color and mostly composed of

The party was well received by tho'e

actors know their "lines and their

barrels filled with variou9"'K5nd3 of

keeper of the den receives orders for
the miserable stuff that ha eelh over
a rough , a e-worn table , by the side
of which stands a huge irou safe to

who buy his liquor. Over the door is

Saturday evening , and , after buying
a cigar , seated himhdf upon a conven

traffic of the place. Soon a pale , ema
ciated woman dragged herself in. She
had scarcely enough clothing to cover
her , and her gray hair was in diiordor
about her wrinkled face. She was KO
weak that she could hardly drag one
foot after the other through the 'dirty
nawduet that covered the floor. She
approached the table , and in quaver
ing tones asked for 5 cents' woith of

of the atfendants. Nervously ilutch-

to cnnceal beneath her tattered shawl ,
the poor crenture crept away.
The next customer was a little girl
who shyly asked for a pint of brandy.
Aa before , the money was demanded
before the liquor was given.
Two tall , well-made men , with
faces that clearly betokened years of
dissipation , then avnf in. Tluir

The keeper of fie place s-giedto

A Crowd of workmgmen came in ,
and thete were well received by all in
tha place. li-was piy night , aud they
had money to spend , so they were
made welcome. D hey wete quiet a id

had stopped at thin stage , there might
have been come damage done ; this
the proprietor knew , and to start
them in the rghfc direct ! n 'oward

This WCB the turning point , and drink
followed drink Until they were reduced
to a state of utter helplessness. Many
of them sank upon the flosr , power
less to move. These wore dragged to
the door by the attendant ? , cast out
into tbe street , and left to the mercy
of any thief who rai ht rob them of
the remainder of their week's wcges.
The prccsss of weeding out continued
until only one was left , and he stood
leaning against a barrel , blinking in a
silly manner at the objects surround
ing him. Soon a pretty little girl ,
about five years old , entered , and
walking up to him , placed her hand
in his , and befgod him to coma home.
"It's all-hie right , darlin' , " he gur
gled , and as ho tt-irtcd for the door
he lost balance and fell heavily upon
the floor. This was the singal for an
other ejection. la an instant he was
lying upon the sidewalk , with his lit
tle girl hanging , sobbing , over him.
The reporter went to the little ono'a
assistance , and succeeded after much
labor in gettin ? the man on hia feefc.
"Where doypuHvel" asked the re
porter of the child. 1
"Only around the corner , sir , " she
replied.
It took about an hour to get the
man "around the corner" and into his
home , but Iho icpotter considered
himself well repaid when h > received
the heartfelt thanks of the wife and
child of the wretched drunkard.
Lassoing a Lion.
Frcso'.t ( Ar. ) Miner.
For some time pait an old and gi
gantic mountain lion has been playing
havoc with the yoUug colts and calves
of different herds around Walnut
creek , and so great had the destruction
of young animals become of late that
a party of experts with the Isaso de
cided upon the capture of the monster.
Accordingly , Iko Goodman , Dan
O'Laary and a Mr. Ambrose went out
whore he Waa wont to rOim , and lay
for him. Mr. Lion appeared every
night , therefore Ihey were pretty sure
of their game. They encamped near
a band of horses belonging to Geor o j
Cornell , and awaited the coming of
the "boss" lion in northern Arizo
na. Just at daybreak they heard
the cry of a young c It , and
knew that his lordsbip , the
lion , was at his work. Mr. Ambrose
and Mr. Goodman saddled their horses
and prepared their rial-is with a view
of lassoing the animal , They soon
found their game drinking the warm
blood of a hundred-dollar colt , whyn
Ambrose threw the laaso over the
, holding him fast and secure
The lion took in ilia situation and
made fiyht. With one bound he lit on
the rump of the h < rse , ready to per
form on Ambrcsa thf operation which
he had jujt concludtd on the colt ,
when Ike Goodman's Usao WAS thrown
over tha lion , aud tn an instant the
giant lion , which m-raiurtd cu ht aad
a half feet , was stretched out longer
than any rail which Uncle Abe split
whbn he followed rail-splitting for a
livelihood in tha early daya of Illinois.
A costly anirnftl has been disposed of ,
much to the peace of the colta and
calves and the owners thereof.
