' The parly wort from Williamson valley to theB'g ' Wiibams range , and thence to Pine Spring , fine they found every indication of an eli sea bed , iho gravel and rocks being r ucd and cmucth , B'milar to those in the ocean bed. FtomPine Spring the party directed their cjurso to the Ava Eupai village , which ia reechsd by defending from the table land down one of the roughest trails ever traveled by men for a distance of fourteen roi'es , dripping 8000 feet. At places along the trail we are told that it in not over twenty inches wide , and winds around the perpendicular walls of sand stone that looms above for hundreds of feet , while on the ether Eidn , dark deep canyons exist , hun dreds upon hundreds of feet deep , where by one false step or move , man or beast would be sent to eternity. With great care and good luck , ten of the party succeeded in reaching the villdg , three of their number retura- ing rather than ran the gauntlet in pwsing down into this awful , yet marvellous , crevice in the earth. The Ava Supu'a practQ9 ! polygamy , each male having about three wives. They have 1000 acres of farming lands which is described ns being of a yel lowish color and mostly composed of sand. However , it is eaid to cro- duce good corn , pumpkins , melon , und bcaiif , with the aid cf irrigating water , of which they have n peach orchard of 950 trees , which on the 1st of April loaded with small ptachea about the itize of acornp. The party was well received by tho'e red people , who stated tha4 their greatett desire was to be left alone in the cuivment of their land and other property. Their houses aw built with poles in a rude manner , thatched over with bear grass end tude. A few ponies are all the stock they have. Cstnract creek heads in the Bit ; Williams and San Franciaoo moun- triin , the streams connecting some distance above the Indian village. The etrrjim emplics into the"Bg ? The party attempted to explore Cjtaract ore k to i s confluence with the Colorado , but were unable to dose so from tha factthat they encountered precipice after precipice from 100 to 200 feet paiptndicular , and it waa in the f-oi-hrrdv attempt of D. Mr. Moeney took a small rep > - , hardly half an inch in diameter , tied the cud to a Kink , suspended it ovur the brink , thew toVing hold of the rrpe , wa * soon dangling between the bright heavens ard the dark gorge balow. Evidently cramp came in bin firms , or his hold pave way , and he fell from almo-t the top to his rocky and lonely grave below. The party rein lined nearly two dsys , devising means nnd p'atia'to rescue the corpse , Vut with f ilore , a ? no one cared to risk a descent upon a weak ropei The Indians informed the parly that no tnanlud ever passed through the can yon ; that in fact , the p ffaie was only possible for the birds of the air or the spirits of the dead. A Paeblo Bollo. Mrs LewWil'scs. ' There pa'-so * my window at this mo ment a young Indisn girl from Teiu- que , a village eight miles norh of this phca ( Santa Fo ) . Like the beloved onn of the Cantidex , she is dark but comely , and without s-tddle or bridle aitR astiide her li'tlo ' burro in cool de fiance of city prej'idloe. Always gaily dressed , wish ready nod and a quick smile , showing the whitest teetn , we call her Bright Alfaratia , in memory of the sweet singer of the Blue Juni- ata : through the interpreter says her name is Pov-ve , the Rising Moon. Neither of us understand n word of the other's language , so I beckon to I er. She springs to the ground with the supple grace of an antelope and cnme to me , holding out a thin , slen der hand , the tint of Florentine bronze , seats herself on the window sill , and in the shadoof the portal we converse inihat young lovers are ploBsed to call eloquent silence. Her donkey will not stray , but lingers pa- tiantly about , like the lamb he resem- blei in face and temper , and nibbles the scant grass which fricgoj the ace- quia. I think his mistress must be a lady of high degree , perhaps the cac ique s daughter , she wears such a holt' ' day air , unusual with such women , and so richly adorned with beads of strung periwinkles. The piny presented is entitled "Tiie Treaty Bitween the Six Asiatic Nations"and is embellished with the incidents con nected with that treaty. The play embraces every shade of acting , from light comedy to heavy tragedy. The actors know their "lines and their cuss , and they also knew how to act ; thera were no quarrels betwean the leading lady and the soubrette , and the star and the leading man ; there were not half a hundred djad- heads ; there were no bouquets bought by the members of the company and sent to themselves by the usher ; there wara no tedious waits between acts , but there were some tedious acts be tween waits ; iho orchestra consisted of n fiddle , two banjos , a machine that made a nniso like to boys with sticks striking a pa-Hng-feace going at full speed , end three pairs of cymbals ono pvlr aa large as w.-wr.tubr. The entrance is on a level with the sidewalk , which eema to have entered into an endiess con test with the floor of the rumshop as to which can become and reniainXne dirtiest. The entrance is lined with barrels filled with variou9"'K5nd3 of liquors. There is no bar , but the keeper of the den receives orders for the miserable stuff that ha eelh over a rough , a e-worn table , by the side of which stands a huge irou safe to secure the money of the poor wretches who buy his liquor. Over the door is R big sign which informs "till lovera of " . . that " gotd thing * , , i splendid drink" of any kind can be bought for fiye cents. Scarcely un derstanding what w s meantJjy ' 'good things" a Tribune reporter stepped info the filthy hole about 7 o'clock Saturday evening , and , after buying a cigar , seated himhdf upon a conven ient keg to DO'O ' the nature of the traffic of the place. Soon a pale , ema ciated woman dragged herself in. She had scarcely enough clothing to cover her , and her gray hair was in diiordor about her wrinkled face. She was KO weak that she could hardly drag one foot after the other through the 'dirty nawduet that covered the floor. She approached the table , and in quaver ing tones asked for 5 cents' woith of gin."Qimrao "Qimrao your money , " said-tho brute in charge. ' Five ponnlfcu were Transferred from the wretcHeS woman'ri hi--4 t rte safe , and about a gillf jh * "i'.e poison was poured into n bottle by one of the atfendants. Nervously ilutch- ing the bittle , which she vainly tried to cnnceal beneath her tattered shawl , the poor crenture crept away. The next customer was a little girl who shyly asked for a pint of brandy. Aa before , the money was demanded before the liquor was given. Two tall , well-made men , with faces that clearly betokened years of dissipation , then avnf in. Tluir clothes wore in tatters , and t'r ov trem bled as they called feverishly for drink. "Ten cent1 , " we ? the answer from the rnin b-hiad tha 3esk. "I pay j on tomorrer mornin' sure , Billy , " taid one of the men in a husky voice. ' W don't trust. Git nut. " "Oh , don't refueu9 , Billy. I'll pay you rcm rrer. sure. D.m ht-re will be my fecurity , he coirmued , pointing to his companion. ' 'Won't ym D.UI ] " The keeper of fie place s-giedto his two burly attendants , who pounced up-m the penniless ftlljws and threw them aprawlintr intfi the dirty s'reet. ' A Crowd of workmgmen came in , and thete were well received by all in tha place. li-was piy night , aud they had money to spend , so they were made welcome. D hey wete quiet a id orderly when they entered , but a few drinks sufficed to transform them iu'o noisy , quarrelsome riiffiar.3. If they had stopped at thin stage , there might have been come damage done ; this the proprietor knew , and to start them in the rghfc direct ! n 'oward helplers intoxication he "treated. " This WCB the turning point , and drink followed drink Until they were reduced to a state of utter helplessness. Many of them sank upon the flosr , power less to move. These wore dragged to the door by the attendant ? , cast out into tbe street , and left to the mercy of any thief who rai ht rob them of the remainder of their week's wcges. The prccsss of weeding out continued until only one was left , and he stood leaning against a barrel , blinking in a silly manner at the objects surround ing him. Soon a pretty little girl , about five years old , entered , and walking up to him , placed her hand in his , and befgod him to coma home. "It's all-hie right , darlin' , " he gur gled , and as ho tt-irtcd for the door he lost balance and fell heavily upon the floor. This was the singal for an other ejection. la an instant he was lying upon the sidewalk , with his lit tle girl hanging , sobbing , over him. The reporter went to the little ono'a assistance , and succeeded after much labor in gettin ? the man on hia feefc. "Where doypuHvel" asked the re porter of the child. 1 "Only around the corner , sir , " she replied. It took about an hour to get the man "around the corner" and into his home , but Iho icpotter considered himself well repaid when h > received the heartfelt thanks of the wife and child of the wretched drunkard. Lassoing a Lion. Frcso'.t ( Ar. ) Miner. For some time pait an old and gi gantic mountain lion has been playing havoc with the yoUug colts and calves of different herds around Walnut creek , and so great had the destruction of young animals become of late that a party of experts with the Isaso de cided upon the capture of the monster. Accordingly , Iko Goodman , Dan O'Laary and a Mr. Ambrose went out whore he Waa wont to rOim , and lay for him. Mr. Lion appeared every night , therefore Ihey were pretty sure of their game. They encamped near a band of horses belonging to Geor o j Cornell , and awaited the coming of the "boss" lion in northern Arizo na. Just at daybreak they heard the cry of a young c It , and knew that his lordsbip , the lion , was at his work. Mr. Ambrose and Mr. Goodman saddled their horses and prepared their rial-is with a view of lassoing the animal , They soon found their game drinking the warm blood of a hundred-dollar colt , whyn Ambrose threw the laaso over the , holding him fast and secure The lion took in ilia situation and made fiyht. With one bound he lit on the rump of the h < rse , ready to per form on Ambrcsa thf operation which he had jujt concludtd on the colt , when Ike Goodman's Usao WAS thrown over tha lion , aud tn an instant the giant lion , which m-raiurtd cu ht aad a half feet , was stretched out longer than any rail which Uncle Abe split whbn he followed rail-splitting for a livelihood in tha early daya of Illinois. A costly anirnftl has been disposed of , much to the peace of the colta and calves and the owners thereof. AN OFFENSIVE BREATH is abominable , and there is no excuse for it. SOZODONT will always erad icate this miserable evil from whatever cause. But there ara thousands who utterly neglect any cara of their teeth and suffer their" breath to become ttinfdd.
