liant star which , familiar as it is to all
who scan the heavens , is always a
wonder and admiration. It has re
ceived and well deserves the name
of "the giint planet ; " it mass exceed
ing very considerably that of all other
Elaneta in our aystenv combined. A

wanderer drawn from the latest and
beat astronomical authorities may be

the i scientific portion they will , of
course , lack the element of novelty.
Jupiter exceeds the earth in volume
about thirteen hundred t nies ; in mass
about two hundred and thirteen
times. This shows that his specific
gravity is much less than that of the
earth ; less , indeed , than that of wa-
ter. His mean diameter is about 85-
000 miles ; but in consequence of rapid
rotation on his axis , the equatorial
exceeds the polar diameter by 5000
miles. Hia mean dis ance from the
sun ia 480.000,000 miles that of the
earth is about 92,000,000 but the ec
centricity of his orbit makes the act
ual oiatance range between 457,000-
000 and 503,000,000. The Jovian
year , or period of revolution round
the sun , is fifty days less than twelve
of our years. The Jovian day is
about nine hours and fifty-five and a
half minutes. Telescopic examination
shows two belts , or banda , stretching
across the disk of the planet ; one
light and the other dark. They are of a
very complex character and undergo
frequent changes , seldom presenting
the same appearance on two successive
nights. In fact , they may be consid
ered as one belt or band , nnd are sup
posed to be vaporous or cloud-like
formations produced by causes not
yet thoroughly understood. It is believed -
lieved by those most competent to ex
press an opinion on the difficult sub
ject , that Jupiter is not yet covered
with a solid crust , liku that on which
we live , but is in a liquid or gaseous
condition , as our earth once was. It
seems certain that the Interior has an
escerdmgly high temperature , almost
as great as ihit of the sun. In no
Other way can the rapid changes no
ticeable on the surface be accounted
for. It is also strongly suspected that
Jupiter shines partly by his own
light ; though what proportion of the
light is original , and how much is
borrowed from the sun , is not yet as
certained , and probably never will be.
"Tho giant planet" is attended by
Four satellites , or moons , whose di
ameters as nearly aa they can be es
timated range between twenty-two
hundred and thirty-seven hundred
miles. The diameter of our moon is
twenty-one hundred and sixty miles
These satellites nre specially interest
ing to non-scientific people on account
of their association with Galileo.
They were among the earliest dis
coveries of th , t great and sorely per
secuted astronomer , having bum
found by him with his first tudo tele
scope. Some of them at least can be
seen when the atmosphere i * clear , by
the aid of a good opera-glass ; and it ia-
claimed that exceptionally strong
eyes have seen them wiihout assist
ance. Galileo's discovery was re
ceived with incredulous scorn by the
scientists of tha d > y. One of them ,
named Clavius , insisted tnat it was an
optical delusion. Ho , however , looked
And was convinced. A more obstinate
philosopher declined to use the tele
scope lest he should bo convinced , and
died an unbeliever. When Gtlileo
heard of hi * death ho quietly re
marked , "I hope ho saw thorn while
on hia way to heaven. " The satel
lites am too small and too distant for
accurate examination of their surfaces ,
nor can their euddeii and sutpming
changes in brilliancy bo satisfactorily
explained , though mai.y ingenious
theories have bean propounded.
This year Jupiter wi 1 be in opposi
tion October 7. ( Planets are said to
be in opposition when their longitude
differs 180 degrees from that of the
sun , so that they rise at sunset and
set at sunrise ) During the next four
rears he will bo in opposition , on the
average , about a month and seven
days later each year ; that is about the
middle of November , 1881 , the latter
part of December , 1882 , and corre
spondingly later in 1883 and 1884.
For a month or two preceding tbo date
of opposition he will rise late in the
evening. In the three months follow
ing opposition he is always visible OJF-
lior , somewhere between the southeast
and southwest.
How Proof Reading sounds.
Some writer has produced a poem
entitled "Sounds from the Sanctum. "
It reads just too pretty , and gives rise
to the thought that the author never
visited the sanctum when business was
in full blast. If he had called about
midnight , for instance , he would have
seen two saints , one pouring over a
proof-slip , the other holding the copy ,
and the sounds would have been some
thing like this :

A Gold-Backed Spider.
Virginia City ( N'ev ) Chronicle.
A case that strongly reminded some
people of Poo's story of "The Gold
Bug , " turned up in the court of Jua-
! tice Moses recently. A Mra. Turner ,
j residing at No. 187 North Howard
street , found the gold watch and chain
belonging to ex-Officer Kinzle in her
I < water closet about a week ago. She
told the neighbors of her discovery ,
and this coming to the ear * cf the
officers , caused an investigation and
, the recovery of the property. Mra.
Turner testified that she found the
watch while hunting for a pet spider.
This morning a Chronicle reporter
called at her house and she gave a
more explicit account of the spider.
About a year ago she noticed that a
large black spider has located its
web in one of the upper
corners of the water closet.
The insect was marked with a
large gold spot on its back , and Mrs.
Turner bocamelmpressed with the idea
that the gold spot was a sign of good
luck. She accordingly told her chil
dren to leave the insect unmolested.
It lived in a state of undisturbed and
pampered repose in its web , which
soon became very large and heavy.
The solder was occasionally fed by the
children , who left dead flu-a and
crumbs of bread within its reach. A
fdwdays ago , however , the little weav
er was missing , and Mrs. Turner be
gan a rigid search for it , and while
thus engaged she found the gold
watch and chain , which were subse
quently identified as the property
stolen from the room of ex-Officer
Kinzle. The trial of the boys accused
of the robbery is still in progress.
Fire and Water-Proof Paper.
A paper , which experiments have
shown to be thoroughly fire proof , has
recently been brought out , and , with
the use of an ink , which is also held
to be defiant t : > the elements , tha pub
lic will soon begin to feel that import
ant documents of the future are 10 be
secure against their most dangerous
nemy. Asbestos , borax and alum
re among the in rodiuuts of the pa-
> er , which is followed by a bath of
; um .shellac dissolved in alcohol , or
other suitable solvent of that gum ,
which imparts to the paper a thor
ough water-proof quality. The sala
mander ink for this peculiar inven-
ion can be used for either printing or
wri ing.
Water proof paper is no novelty ,
for it has been for ni.uiy years used
n the manufacture of small race boats
and kindred cr.ift Recently , how
ever , it has also been used s a coating
on iron ships to prevent fouling tin
ler water. While this covering is sev
eral hundred per cent cheaper than
wood or copper , it ia Iso claimed to
> e far superior in ovary respect.
