Grant was found to ba delight fully offhand and pleasant. She talked right and left , and to many at a tims , hnjfain ? aud chatting without cessation and apparently without tiring. "i'hia will be your first vhit to Denver ] ' some one suggested inquir ingly to her. "No , indeed ; I have been there twice before. " "You are almost aa great a traveller as the general. "Yea ; I generally go with him. " "Were you with him much during the war ? " "I was part of the time with him , but notaa the papera represent jd. I had a paper aent me the other day with an article marked , in which I was represented as being much better than I am , and as doing many things frhich were impossible. For instance is was stated that after a battle in which the general was engaged I invariably hurried to the front to bo of what service I might. Now that was not true at all. The general would not have put up with It at all. He would have been very im ry if I had ap peared at such a time , and I knew it. "Ir was a'so stated that I had bus- lid mytelf in hunting out poor people ple upon whom to bestow almi. This was also Incorrect. Enough of such people always found me ; I dtd not have to seek them oUt. Then I was reported aa busying myself in seeking positions for worthy young ladies in the treasury department , and for oth er applicants in other places. Now , my husband would not allow that. I did nothing of the kind to inliuenco him. I don't thittk in fact , I am sure I don't ' that in the whole two terms in which ho was president I ob tained more than two appointments. So , you see , the nowspapem were wrong. " "I remember to have seen it stated that Inng before the war you often pre dicted that your -husband would be president , " eald some one. "Yes. I know such statements have b3en made , but thsy were utterly without foundation. I did not dream of my husband becoming president any length of vlmo be ore ho was ac tually called to the position. In fact , I was not ambitious to have him fill the position until they began to abuse him. I was perfectly satisfied to have him remain general of the army. About two weeks before the conven tion which nominated him I spoke to him about the reports that were being circulated that ho Would receive the nomination , and asked him if he thought he would be bo nominated , and he said he thought he would be , and if ho were chosen he would be elected. I asked him if ho thought he could fill the office , and ho replied that he thought he could do so as well as most others. "You of course , enjoyed your trip abroad ? " said one , changing the sub ject.Being Being led off in this direction , Mis. Grant talked very freely of her ex perience in the 'ar east and in Europe. She spoke of their visit ta various places , and told of their meeting with the great of the world. The general , she said , had thought a great deal of Gambstta , the French statesman. "Only yesterday , " she said , "he was readicg of Gambetta's recent succes , and said he was clad to see that the French were beginning to show an ap preciation of tnis really great man. " Oh yes , they saw Prince Bismarck and the Crown Prince of Germany. Both were delightfully pleaiant. Bismarck called upon her , as he did also upon the genera ] , and they dined at his houses. This was a ntre experience so informal and agreeable ; they were auch pleasant people that eho was re minded of her homo folks. The prince led her to the dressing-room , and the princes ) folded her abawl about her as tenderly aa her mother could have done. But of all the places visited she en joyed none batter than Japan. The people there were anxious to learn of the Americans , and were really pro- gresdve. But to tell us all she saw and enjoyed there would require too much space. The visits to Mexico and New Mexico ice were reff rred to with evidently de lightful recollections. She spoke of the Aztec pottery as a great curiosity. Had she met Gen. Lew Wallace ? No ; but she had read his novel , "The Fair God'and had been very much enter tained by it. Turning to her listen- eF3 > EllsaBked had they read Judge TourgeoVHF66l Errand ? " Near ly all had. That ahetnbushtanox- : _ cellont thing. The general had alio" read it , and pronounced it a very cor rect picture of the life represented. In rnply to the questions , Mrs. irant stated that they expected to re- itlo at Galena for the present. She would like very well to live in Colora- debut if she could havener preference ( ratified she would prefer Washing- , on to any other place , principally be cause of the great number of acquain ances there. Did she not tire of making now acquaintances and seeing new faces' ? No ; neither did the gene ral. They had been living such a life "or the past twenty years , and they liad become used to it. Here the train drew up to the de pot. The general's "Jap" brought in the general's silk hat , and , without consulting the general , took the slouch from his head and put the silk in i s place and retired. GRIZZLY DAN. THE GREAT HUNTER AND INDIAN FIOnXEU AGAIN IN TROUBLE. VirzinU ( Ncv. ) Chronicle. Doc Williamson , alias Grizzly Dan , the boss bear-killer of the Yosemite , San Jose , and several other howling wildernesses , was set adrift from the Virginia City jail about two wotks ago , after several sprees and consequent quent sentences in the police court , and has now turned up in Ciraon again. The Appeal of this morning says : "On Wednesday night a fellow calling himself Dr. Williamson , hail- inn from Gleubrook , was arrested by Officer Stern on a charge of petit lar ceny. Williamson has been in the city several days very drunk , and on Wednesday , ignoring all professional courtasy , ho robbed the offices of Drs. Lees , Fox and Smart of pipes , surai- cal instruments and many other things. He boldly walked into Dr. Fox's of fice during the doctor's absence and among other articles stole a valuable meerschaum pipe , and without feir ol detection placed the stem into his bac whisky-reeking mouth and strollec off. Dr. Fox had him arrested , and when examined in the sheriffs office : perfect curiosity shop was taken oul of the calpriVs pocket , most every ar ticle of which had been stolen. ' Grizzly Dan is a well known charactei in Santa Clara county , Cal. , and hai recently become as notorious on thi Comstock as the "GREAT GRIZZLY EXTERMINATOR , " but nobody ever yet knew him to kil [ a bear or even have a gun in his pos session. Hia most daring exploits ar getting drunk , telling outrageous bea stories and pillaging physicians' ofti ces. Dan usually winds up a bi spree by invading a doctor's office am walking off with his instruments. H cleaned out a dissecting rocm In Sa : Jose on one occasion , and then S3 down on the steps of the police cour with ecalpars , saws and proben stickin out of Ls packets , and a bottla cor Ii tainins ; a loely tumor preserved i alcohol , under hia arm. He tel Judge Buckner that if he was allowed to io ; ho would take a trip to Boar valley , in the Santa Crua mountains , and fetch the judge a grizzly for ChnVraai. His Honor remarked that the grizz'y ' would roam unmolested in his native wilds until long after Christ mas , and the judge was a true prophet After serving oat his sen tence , Grizzly Dan went to Stocktm and pillaged another d. . ctor'fl office and tried to ampntiie a Dutchman's head with the plunder. Dan was never known to steal anything when sober , but ho says : ' -When I'm drunk any thing I get these five fingers on is mine , and don't you forgat it. " As nn Indian fighter , when under the controlling influence of drink , he is also a holy terror. IN MONTANA , He was once set upon by a whole triba i of howling red devils and was obliged to run for hia life. He headed for the brink of a cliff about TOO feet high , dcdding the bullets as be ran , being able through long practice to tell tae course of a ball by the sound as it approached preached from the rear. Grizaly Dan unhesitatingly leaped over the cliff , to the amazement of the Indians , who gathered in a row to watch his fall. Dan turned in the air as he was fall ing , raised his Winchester rifle to his shoulder and pulled the trigger. An Indian toppled over with a ball through his left eye , and Dan kept pulling the lever and trigger until seventeen of the red devils had balls through their left eyes and were fall- over the cliff after him. The oifih- . . teenth chot only carried away an In dian's nose , as the air was so full of failing Indians between Dan and the top of the cliff that his aim was a little confused. Ho struck feet foremost in the river below and swam ashore un injured. The Indian remaining on the top of the cliff was the sole sur vivor of the tribe , and was ever after wards known ' 'Man-with-a-holo-in- as - - - - - his-noae.1' ' - . A party of Detroiters who were fishing for brook trout on the Boyne river , and cam. ing on its banks , ran out of supplies , and an envoy was sent out to beg , buy or borrow eomething until an order sent to Traverse City could be filled. After a walk of two miles ho reached a log homo in the woods. A woman , five children , three dogaj and a family of tame coons occu pied tha one single room in the homo. The furniture was all home-made , the table ware consisted entirely of fin dishes , and only ons bed wis visible. The envoy stated his errand , and the woman replied : "Flour ! I reckon wo ran out o1 flour yesterday , and we won't have any more until next week. "C.m you spare any coffee ? " "I guess not. The last cnffeo we had run out on Christmas. If e git any next week I'll spare you some. " "How about tea ? " "Well , tea has been purty skeerco with us for the last two months , but Ben said ho thought of gittin1 some 'Ions ; this fall. If you are around here when our tea comes , we'll divide with you. " "You haven't any potatoes to spare , have you ? " "Well , now , you ought to have been here last week for 'taters. I cooked the last Sunday. These 'ere dogs and childf en sot a heap by cold 'taters , and they go off like hot cskes Ben ia going to got some moro 'long about Saturday. " "Haven't you any provisions at all which you can spare ? " asked the dis couraged envoy. ' Well , now , I don't believe we have , but we are poitig to stock up 'long in the fall. I was telling Ben only last night that I'd got kinder tired of scroochin' aloncjon Injuh and lasses. " "I'll buy some of that if you can spare 't , for wa haven't a bite of any thing in camp. " "No , I can't sell any. Fact is , wo hid the last for breakfast , and Ben won't get any moro till Saturday night. " "I'm sorry , " sighed the man as he turned away. "Yes , so'ml , " she sighed in return. "I seed your party down thar in camp t'other day , and you look like honest folks. I'd be plad to spare you some- thin' , but I can't. If you men want to move your camp up here , and en joy our society , and use our smudge to drive away skeeters , we'll do our best to make it pleasant ; but when you come down to fodder we ain't nowhar' . I was telling Ben only last night that we'd be lucky if wo got these dogs and coons through another winter ! " ECONOMY AND PLEASURE. united in SOZODONT.
