"I am a railroad engineer. Away , along in ' 67 , during the great panic , I ! was running on the F. and 0. roid. J The railroad companies were going un der in all directions. Every day we heard of new failures and quite often in a quarter where we least expected it. Our read was generally looked upon aa ona of the most substantial in the nation ; nobody seemed to have any fears that it would fail to survive the general mash-upbut ; yet I didn't fully share in the general confidence. Wages . . ere cut down , arrearages col lected , and a great many other little matters seemed to indicate to me thht the road had got into rather deeper water than was agreeable all around. Among other things , the master me chanic had told me in the spring that the company had ordered four first quality Taunton engines for the fall pisaenger business. The road was put in the very best condition and other preparations were made to cut down the time and put the trains through quicker than was ever known before , when the new engines should come. Well , there was but one of the engines came. "I raid there was but one engine came : but she was , in my opinion , al together the best over turned out of the Taunton works ; and that is saying as much as can be said in pr.\iso of any engine. She wai put i ; , my charge immediately , with the understanding that the was mine. "It was Saturday when she came out of the shop , and I was to take a special train up to Y . The train was to carry up the president and sev er tl officers of the mad to meet aomo officers of another roadj which crossed oura there , and arrange some import ant business with them. "I had no trouble at all in making my forty miles an hour going out. The engine handled herself mrstbeiu- tifully. We wera just holding up at Y j when Alrich , the treasurer , who had come out on the platform to pub the breik on , slipped and fell. As wo were still under good headway ha was much injured and was carried off to the hotel insensible. "According to the president's direc tions I switched off my train , turned my engine and stood ready to start back to C at a moment's notice. "Alrich's presence was of EO much Importance that the business could not be transacted without him ; so all those I had brought out , except the president and Alrich , went back to U on the three o'clock express train. This was the last regular train which was to pssj over the road until next Monday. "Early in the evening I left the ma chine in charge of my fireman and went over to an opting house to see if I could not spend the time more pleasantly than on my engine. The hours dragged themselves away slow ly. I was ulayinga game of dominoes with the station agent when in came Roberts , the president , in a state of great excitement. "Harry , " said ho tome , 'I want you to put me down in C at twelve o'clock. " "As it was nearly eleven o'clock then , and the distance was seventy- five miles , I thought he was joking at first ; but when wo got ou-tside the doer , ho caught me by the arm , and hurried mo along so fast that I saw he was in ear -est. " 'Harry , ' said ho , 'if you don't set mo down n ? C by 12 o'clock I am a ruined man , and Ihis road is n ru incd road. Aldrich is dead ; but ho told mo before he died , th.it he had embezzled from time to time 8300,000 of our money , and his clerk is to start with it on the twelve o'clock boat from 0 for Canada. If we don't have that money on Monday morning , to make some payments with , the road gee ? into other hands ; and if you put me down at C at. the ruzht time , so that I nave the money , you shall hive $5000. Understand it , Harry. Five thousand dollars ! ' "Of course I understood it. I saw now the reason why the wages had been cut down ; I undarstood it alland my blood boiled. I felt that I would save the road if I lived , and told Rob erts so. " 'See that you do it , Harry. " he replied as he climbed up the steps of the ccach whichjcoupled to my engine. "I sprang up into the footboard , got up the switch tender to help my fireman , opened tha throttle , and just as she commenced moving looked at my watch it was just eleven o'clock , so that I had one hour to make my seventy-five miles in. "From Y to C there wore few curves on the road ; but there were several heavy grades. I was per- fectly'acquainted with every rod of it ; so that I knew exactly what I had to encounter , and when I saw how the engine moved I felt very little fear for the result. The road , for the first miles , was an air line , and so smooth that my engine ilow along with acarely a perceptible jar. I was so busy , posting myself up as to the amount of wood and wa ter aboard , etc. , that wo danced by the first station almost before I was aware of it , having been five minutes out , and having five miles accom plished. "You are losing time ! " yelled a voice from the coach. I looked around , and there stood Roberts with his watch in his hand. "I knew very well that wo would have to increase our speed by some means if we carried out our plans of reaching C by midnightaiid looked around anxiously to see what I could do to accomplish that purpose. She .w < i8 blowing off steam fiercely at 210 [ pounds ; 101 turned down the valve to 200 , for I know we should need it all to make some of the heavy grades which lay between us and C . "It was three miles to the next st4- lion. With the exception of a few curves the track was as good as the bst. As we darted around what com monly seeuled to bo a rather long curve , at the station , but which was , at our high speed , short enough , I looked at my watch , and wo had done it in two minutes and a half. " 'Gaining , ' I shouted back to Rob erts , who was yet standing on the platform of the coach. " 'Lookjjout for tha heavy grades , ho replied , and went inside the car. "Tho next six miles rose gradually from a level the first , to ten and a half feet prado the last , which lay between us and the next station. My fireman kept her full and now she began to get hot. .Tha furnace door was red and the steam raised continually , so that she kept her speed and passed the station like a streak of light in five minutes. "Now came nine miles like the last ; over which she kept pace with her time , and passed the station in seven and a half minutes. "Here , for ten miles , we had a 20- foot grade to encounter ; but the worst of it all was at this place we would be obliged to atop for wood. I was just going to speak to Roberts about it when I looked around and eaw him filling the tender from the coach with wood which had been placed there be fore "starting , while he was gone after me. me."I believe we would have made this ten miles with the same speed as before , but through the carelessness of the fireman the fountain valve on the left hand side of the engine got opened , and the water rose In the boiler so fast as to run the steam down ta ICO pounds before I discovered where tha difficulty was. "At first Roberts didn't appear tc notice the deoreaso r.f gjieed , and kent at work at the wood a if for drar lifo , But present'y he looked up , and , seeing that tha spe d had de creased , he shouted : 'Harry , wo are stopping ! ' and , then , coming over where I was , he said : 'Why , ne/o we | have been ten minutes on the last ten miles , and I believe we will come to a- dead stand if something is not done. The speed is continually slacking. What is the matter ? ' "I explaned the cause. He waa apparently satisfied with the explan ation , and , after having tied down the safety valve , he climbed back over the tender , exhorting me to 'put her through , for God's sake , or we are all beggars together ! " "Just then we passed the next sta tion taken nina minutes for eight miles. We were now more than half over the road , but we had lost nearly ten minutes' time , and had left only twenty-seven minutes to do thirty-four miles in. "I had shut the water off from both my pumps a little distance back , when I discovered what was the matter , and she was now making steam finely down a single grade. From leas than one hundred with which we started over that ten mile stretch , ehe had two hundred pounds before we finished it ; and , as the guage indicated no higher than that , and the valve waa tied down , I could not tell how much over two hundred pounds she carried , but she certainly carried none less the rest of the journey. And well might she carry such an enormous head of steam , for , after passing over ten miles in eight minutes , there lay ten miles of five feet up-grade and four- tean miles of twenty-feet-to-the-mile depression between us and C , and it was now thirteen mlnutea to twelve o'clock. "Now the enjjiue was hot in earnest. The furnace door , smoke arch and chimney all were red ; while she seem ed to fly onward as if the very evil one himself operated her machinery. "Six minutes carried us over that ten miles ; and wo darted by the last station that had lain between us and 0 . Now wo had fourteen miles o go , and my time showed fifty three minutes paat eleven o'clock. " 'If I live , ' said I to myself , Til make it. " And we plunged down that wenty-foot grade with a1 ! steam on. ersona who asiw the train on that wild run said that it was snon after : hey heard the first sound of her ap pronch.when the strange object , which looked aa if it .was a flame of fire , ilarted by , and then the sound of its traveling died away in the distance , that they could hardly convince them selves that had really seen anything. It seemed more like theereature of-a wild dream than sober reality. "And now let me tell you that no engine ever beat the time we made on those fourteen miles. Those great wheela , seven feet in diameter , spun around o swift that you couldn't ba in to count the revolutions. The en- oino barely eeemed to touch the track as she flow alone ; and although the track was true as it was possible for it to bo , she swayed fearfully , and some times made such prodigious jolts that it required considerable skill for one to keep his feet. No engine could hold together if crowded to a greater speed. "Well , just as I came to a stand at the depot at C the b'g ' clock boomed out twelve , and the steamboat was getting her steam on. Roberts got on board in time and nothing to spare. But he saved the money. flo found it hid away in some old boxes as Aldrich had directed him.7' He had a Private Grievance. Recently , while one of the clerks at the Galveston court house was maidng out the death warrants of those lead- ng citizens who had not paid their taxes , a dandyfied darkey entered and aaked : "Is you de boss of de grand jury1' ? "Wliftt do ybu wanU" aikod the clerk. "Is dis heah de place whar yer comes when you has got a private riovanco agin some udder nigger ? " "This is where the grand jury meets. " "I wants you , sab , don , to make me out a felony detachment agin Jeoma Webster , and I wants him executed forthwith. " "Why , what's the matter with Jim ] " "Ho is de wuaseat niggah on Gal- veaton Island. If I was as low down , asjviller complected , spindle-shanked moke aa he is I'd tie a million pounds ob ole iron to my legs and walk down to do end ob de waf and push myself off. I would , sure ; and after I had done all dat I'd climb up a holler tree and die. He's got 'ligion , too , and tells what de Lor' has been doing foah him in the meeting. " "But what has he done ? " "I'll splain. Laa' Sunday a week ago I persented one ob de most re fined and lubly youn ladies ob dis city wid a blue cravat wid yaller tas sels. Jess now , what should I see coming down do street but Jim Web ster tied to der same cravat. Ses I , Whar did you steal dat necktie ? ' Ho jess grinned and grinned. Ses I , 'You wont reat till you becomes a moro be- comin' necktie don dat ar , one wid a tassel aa big as yer fist , and de sheriff is' gwine to fasten it ri.ht ; under yer ear. All he said was je to kisa his hand ter me. " "Maybe that lady you speak of gave it to him ? " "He stole it , I tell yer. " "Where did yon get it ? " "Hey ? " "Where did you get it ? ' "Look heah , bosa , you is gwino to bo a candidate , and you is the firm fren of da cullud man , ain't yer ? " "Maybe so. " "Dan you don't want to know at what store I purchased dat ar cravat ? " "But the grand jury will aak you. " "Dey will ? " "Just go right In and tell them all about it. " "Is dey busy now ? " ' .No ; they are waiting for you. " "Dan It doesn't become me to dis turb 'em. Lemme see ( and he con sulted a large silver turnip ) ; it's 9 o'clock now , smack up. 1'se got to write some letters to go by de mail to morrow morning , and dia arternoon dar is a watermelon sociable for de benefit ob do church. I ain't pot time jess now. I want to see Jim Webster tust an' gib him one moah chance t ? splain his connection with dis heah Credit Mobiley business. " "So you think she might have gone back on you and given him that cra vat ? " "No , boas ; but maybe Jim got it off de same counter in de store whar I got de fuss one. * Dem ar neckties war lyin' mighty exposed dar on de counter , and Jim ain't a bit too good to pick up one when nobody was no- ticin' , and walk off wid it , jess like ] did.
