The words fell from the lipi of a
gentleman well known in Leadville ,
yet few recognize in the elegant ,
Busy-going man who now commands
the deep respect of bin fellow-citizens
the once cool-heided , imperturbable
gambler who in his day figured prom
inently along thd Pucifie coait , and
was almost universally recognized as
the shrewdest taro dealer in the west.
"As for the game's morality , that's
neither here nor there. Wheu dealt
upon the square it is much like any
other game. It is not to be thought
that the law will hinder men a bit if
they want to play , and often they are
forever cured of playing when they
find it doesn't pay. I've dealt the
game for twenty years , but I've quit
now. I made nothing nor lost any
thing , and but ior a sight I once saw
I should probably be a g mber ! still.
Hereby hanga a tale. Let me tell it :
"Some three years ago I ran a high-
toned game at a certain place you pro
bably know , for it strikes me that I
saw you there. It was asquare game ,

bloods in town , and often had aa many
as five lay-outs at a time , with too
much business on band to even get
time to rest. One -vening a young
chap strolled in , with a sort of curious

and clean cut features an innocent
looking young fellow , if ever I saw
one. It only required a glance to con

home though , for I saw in his blue

evening he was a constant visitor. He

growled if hii luck was hard , and on
every second card he1 atack the limits
up iu blue. Take it altogether his
luck was hard sometimes the h&rdest
I think I ever aaw. I've hnown him
to lose at a single deal seven double
shots.

somehow it seemed almost too bid. I
couldn't say a word , though , and yet I

I wished him luck as heartily as any
player there ; but no , his last stake

I don't know what it's value is , but

specks on the plain are the flankers ;
brave old buffaloes , which catch a
bite of grass and then sniff the air
and scan the horizon for intimation of
danger. They are the sentinels of
the herd , and right well can they be
trusted.
The wolf creeps nearer !
All the afternoon the great herd hai
fed in peace , and aa it now slowly
moves toward the distant river it is all
unconscious that danger is near. Look
you well and watch the wolf , for you
are going to aee such a sight aa not

rattla of horns would drown the noisa
of a brigade of cavalry galloping over
a stone-paved road.
Ride out on their irail. Here
where the stampede began the ground
is torn and furrowed as if a thousand
cannon had been firing solid shot at
targets. Here and there are calves
which have been gored or crushed
lifra and there older animals with
broken legs and disabling wounds.
Here , where the herd was fairly off ,
you might as well hunt for a gold
dollar as a blade of glass. You look
for three miles as you look across it.
It is a trail of dirt , and dust , and
ruts , and furrows , where half an hour
