Tco wildest excitement prevailed in
Melbourne and the provinces , says a
Melbourne p.iper of Julj 10 , as the
particulirs of the attack , capture and
death of the Kellys came to hand. All
the papers issued extras , the Argus
five editions.
Some obscurity surrounds the action
of the police on Saturday irght after
the death of Sherritt. According to
the account of the stition master
at Glenrowantho gang only left Shcr-
ritt's hut at 6 o'clock in the morning.
Anyhow , information only reached
Beochworth at 1 o'clock in the after
noon. The police and back-trackers
immediately started In pursuit. The
latter were leaving for Queensland on
the following dayand the government
obtained permission to retain them.
On leaving Sherritt's the gang evi
dently made for their old haunts , but
expecting the alarm to be given much
sooner by the police , stopped at Glen-
rowan , awoke the station master nnd
buret tao door of a he/use previously
bailed. Several employes of the rail
way were then summoned , and the
elate layers compelled to tear tip the
line for half a mile on each sideof the
station. The gang , however , omitted
to interrupt the telegraph. Hart was
meanwhile watching Stainstreet , the
station master. The gang eventually
bailed up the whole station , confining
their prisoners in Mrs , Jones' hotel , ,
fifty yards from the station , relieving
guard by turns. They remained iu
possession all Sunday.
A special train , with a party of
newspaper men , police and back track-
era , started from Benalla to the ecene
of the outrage , but stopped short of
ihe township , as the gang had torn up
the track at a curve in the road , on
one side of which was a deep ravine.
The intention was to ditch the train
and massacre the survivors. Thisde-
sien miscarried. On the arrival of the
train at the depot a shot was fired ,
and the police and backtrackera were
soon engaged with the gang. Super
intendent Hare was wounded at the
first shot. About sixty shots were
fired through the weather-boards of
the hotel , when the screams of the
women and children induced the offi
cers to discontinue. After a pause ,
the action cmtinued , the outlaws
keeping up a steady fire on the offi
cers. Two children a boy and girl
were wounded. Reinforcements hav
ing arrived , a heavy volley was poured
into the house , and Byrne , one of the
gang , was fatally shot. Ned Kelly ,
the leader , left the hotel during the
fight , and returned in the morning.
It was nearly 8 o'clock when his tall
figure was seen close behind the line
of police. At firit it was thought that
he was a black fellow. He carried a
great coat over his arm , and walked
coolly and slowly among the police.
His head , chest , back and sides were
all protsctecl with heavy plates of
quarter-inch iron. When within easy
distance of Senior Constable Kelly ,
who was watching him , he fired. The
police then know who ho was , and
fired on the ruflian. The contest be
came one which , from its remarkable
nature , almost baffles description.
Iine policemen joined in the conflict ,
and fired noint blank at Kelly , but al
though it wai apparent that many of
the shots hit him , in consequence of
the way in which ho staggered , yet ho
always preserved himsalf , and , tap
ping his breaat , he laughed derisively
at his opponents as he coolly returned
their fire , fighting only with a revel
ver. It appeared as if ho was a fiend
with a charmed life. For half an hour
the strange combat was catried on.
Then Sergeant Steclo rapidly closed
iu on him , and when within only
about ten yards of him he fired two
shots into his logs , and this brought
the outlaw down. Ho was only
wounded , nnd appeared still deter
mined to carry on the desperate con
flict , but Steele bravely rushed in and
seized the hand iu which Kelly held
his revolver , the only weapon with
which he was armed. Ho tired ono
shot after this , but without effect.

dressed , said she would rather see
him burned in the housa than aak him
to surrender. The firing was renewed ,
and at length , in the presence of 200
sDCctators , the house was sot on fire.
Father Tierney rushed in amidst the
llatnes and resound an old man named
Sbenyonoof the prisoners , who had
bean badly wounded , also the body ot
Byrne. Two other outlaws perished
in the flames. The country people
retained the bodies and threatened

portant than the personal records and
qualifications of the candidates are
the record and character of the par
ties that seek success and power
through them. He is an exceptional
president who escapes from the tradi
tions and influences of his political
surroundings , and makes his adminn-
tra'ion an expression. his own per
sonality. If either of the present
candidates does this , it will not bo ho
who is most superior to his party , who
was least in sympathy with his polit
ical following. Gen. Hancock , as
president , will not bo permitted to be
better than his party. Gen. Garfield
will not try to be. He will merely
try to represent and rule in accord
ance with the best common sense ,
morality and sagacity that is iu it. It
behooves the voter to ask what are the
partioa which stand behind these can
didates and what light does their char
acter and history cast upon the proba
ble policy of future governments con
trolled by them ? And this light must
be sought In the history of the parties
rather than in the carefully prepared
declarations of principles , framed to
pitch votes on the eve of election. It
is not difficult to find it there.
The republican party has not had a
long career , but it is full of events
that make history. It came into be- '
irg to fulfill a great mission and to
right a great wrong. It tulfilled that
mission in forum and field. It grap
pled the great wrong that was eating
out the nation's heart like an ulcer , in
the halls of legulation and justice ,
and whenever the skirmish line of a
popular election was drawn. When
political antagonism became civil war
tha republican party rose to the height
of the situation , took the reins of gov
ernment dropped by its cowardly or
traitorous opponents , and held them
bravely and firmly through all the
terrific crisis that followed. At
home and abroad ; iu the field , in
the capital , in tha legislative
halls , in the courts , in foreign
courts , and in the world's money mar
kets , the republican party maintained
the integrity of the union , the free
dom of all the people and the honor
and credit of the nation. This record
is closed ; this mission fulfilled ; but
who shall say its glory and honor has
departed from the party that achieved
It ] With the close of the ww the re
publican party opened a new record of
civil achievement as great in its way
as thearrnpgle for national existence.
It reconstructed the temple of the na
tional life , which It had defended
from assault until it was disordered
and shattered. It restored the union
of state ? , which had been broken , and
restored each cftmmonwealth to its old
place , purged of the ancient wrong
and with a now meaning given to the
commonplaces of popular freedom and
equity. It restored the wreck which
war had made of the ma
terial inte'ests of the coun
try. It continued the sacrifices
which hid enabled it to carry on the
war , boldly projected the taxation of
war time far into the season of
peace to restore the national finances
and maintain the national credit. It
has reduced the national debt one-
quarter since the war closed , and the
annual burden of interest charge one-
half. It ha jaalously guarded the
national credit , resisted all temptation -
tion to reckless financiering , rigidly
reduced the paper issues of the war
and restored the treasury notes to par
with gold within fourteen years after
the war closed. It has labored to
place the public service and the civil
administration upon a higher plane ,
and , as its latest achiex-ement , has
tiken the first steps in the history of
the government to destroy the en
trenched system of a political civil
service and make tenure of office de
pend upon honesty and apacity.
While the republican party has
been doing this , the democratic party
has simply resisted it at every step.
Beginning its history as the represen
tative of certain principles , the de
mocracy ended by suffering the con
tagionsdry rot of slavery ; and be
coming a party of mere reaction and
resistance. It has had no principles
since 1865 , and that half of it too
cowardly to fight for its principles has
had none since I860. It resisted the
prosecution of the war for the Union.
It resisted the execution of the re
construction policy afterwards. It re
sisted the payment of the public debt
and the restoration of specie pay
ments , end gave it-i countenance
to every wild and foolish finan
cial experiment which has been
suggested to impair the national
credit under a pretense of popular re
lief. It has resisted every beneficent
measure of public policy which the
republican party has presented for
twenty years , without offering any
thing for itself.
