The Money Value of a Cow.

A good cow. euoh as a careful person
would select , will yield from twelve to
sixteen quarts of milk daily when
fresh , to three or four at the end of
ten months , when about to go dry in
preparation for calving again. This
will amount to an average of eight to
ten quarts a day for 300 days , or 2500
quarts at least in a year. Each quart
is worth to a family six cents at least :
that h , the ordinary milk supplied by
dealers or farmers cost at least that
price ; but this is not equal in value to
the milk from a good , well kept family
cow. If the owner of such a cow his
a surplus of milk it can be very readi
ly sold for six cants a quart to neigh-
bora , who would bo glad to have such
a chance , so that the Income in money
from a family cow may be esti
mated at $150 tv year. If butter
is made the 2400 quarts of
milk should yield 250 pounds of
butter , which is worth thirty cents a
pound , or 875 , and the .skimmed milk ,
which id deficient only in fat , and ia
actually bettor on thai account in
many cases , especially as a beverage
for delicate persons , is worth two cents

will serve a sufficiently good purpose ,
however , to take $100 as the gross
yearly income from a good cow , and
as the basis for computing the actual
value of the animal where milk can bo
sold for five or six cents a quart.
Elsewhere the relative value will bear
an oven ratio with the cosv , because
where milk is worth less the cost of
keeping is less. The object is to show
that there is a profit in keeping a cow ,
and having gained a basis for reaching
the income , the next point to con
sider is the cost of keeping her and
the exact profit realized in money ,
leaving other advantages to speak for
themselves. But it ought to be forgotten -
gotten that there are cows that will
not produce half the above mentioned
quantity of milk , and that will not
milk for ten months out of twelve
But there are cowa that will do this ,
and enough of themfand it is the bus-
' .neas of those who want such cows to
ook for them , and not be content to
: aku a poor one at less price ; because
a poor cow will eat as much as a good
cow , and will cost just as much for
origin ? and care , eo that the profit of
seeping a cow will depend altogether
upon her character. Nevertueless ,
there are hundreds of dairymen who
should knowbetter whokecp cows that
do not pay for their feed , and strange
ly enough they continue to keep them
while knowiug this.

I confess that I am not at all sura
that if certain rozewood doors were
flung wide open to certain of our work
ing women that thev would at all be
inclined to onter. Still it would bo-
hard to make any autocrat believe that ,
now wouldn't it ? To illustrate : I
know a certain recognized leader of
fashion and society , a cultivated , ele
gant woman , who can entertain a
whole roomful of company , whose
word and whose opinions are laws in
the circle in which ihe moves. This
lady will not only owe hermillmor for
six months at a time , will not only
bargain and bargain with her seams
tress , and finally tell the over-worked
sowing woman to come again
for one , two and three months
; it a time when she asks for money ,
will let them both see the hard ,
selfish , contemptible side of her na
ture , and which she keeps covered up
from her own friends , but will fur
thermore pass her debtors on her way
to church with a haughty stare as if
she saw them not. To be sure to the
finer quality of women such snobbish
treatment acts rather as a tonic , butte
to the timid , shrinking working-girl ,
who has started out in the world full
of pride at her importance i a bread
winner and a helper , glad in a shy
way of Eer high rank in nature'e aris-
tocrary , such a sneer comes like a wet
blanket. This last spring a certain
vary club of young gentlemen pro
posed giving a reception to their
young lady friends A certain
young gentleman whom I know sent
in the name of a very charm
ing and lovely young lady for an in
vitation to the reception. Her name
was refused , and the mortified appli
cant demanded the reason. Tht
committee was very sorry , and as fat
as they were concerned there was no
reason at all ; but the other young ladies -
dies , who were all high-toned , would
. be sure to object , because she worked
in a store. And I do believe , if those
young lady guests had baen told the
estimation that was _ placed upon their [
idea of the nobility of" work by the
gentlemen of the j. club , that tc

would have been one life-lasting in its
value , and they each would have rec
ognized ' their duties to each other as
women , aa perhaps they had never

A Kansas correspondent of The N.
Y. Tribune writes : The past thirty
years have witnessed many agricultu
ral follies , beeinnlncr with the ' 'morns
muliicuHU" fever , a little more than
three decides ago , the Shanghai fever ,
tha sheep fever , the shorthorn fever ,
and , more late'y , the poultry fever
generally. But , ai it is only by dis
ease that we are brought to appreciate
health , these morbid excitements may
have resulted in some good. Without
desiring to create or put in motion
another "boom , " I wish to direct at
tention , as a specific branch of agri
culture , to the raising of ducks and
geese for profit. Many old farmeri ,
and perhaps some young ones , may
giva a sniff of the nose at this , but
a little experience has satisfied me
that there is more money in ducks and
geese to the farmer than in hens and
turkeys. The duck Is generally es
teemed as a table fowl , and it only
needs tasting to make the goose the
peer of the turkey upon the Christmas
board. As eg ? producers there is no
fowl that will compare with ducks.
They brine a sightly better prica than
chickens , cost no more to raise under
fair conditions , and yield a fine crop
of feathers besides. The goose pro
duces about the same number of epgs
as a turkey , can be raised at half the
cost , brings nearly the same price In
market , and yields abundantly of fine
feathers.
The gooie , like the cow , makes its
living chiefly on grass , while the duck
is the hog of the poultry yard. It
will eat anything from a child's glass
marble to a rattleanake , and , what is
better , seems to digest everything it
swallows. The proper conditions for
roisin ? these fowls profitably are a low
house surrounded by a corral sufficient
to turn wolves and foxes , with a pas-
tnre proportioned to the size of the
flock , one acre to fifty geese. Clover
is the best forage. The pasture should
be divided into four apartments.
Four-foot laths cut in two will make a
fence tall enough. Shallow cast-iron
bowls surrounded by pickets , so that
they can only cot the head und neck
in , make the best receptacles for wa
ter , or , if convenient , a shallow run
ning spring. The younglings of either
geese or ducks must bo carefully fed
until three weeks old , and the best
food is light bread , made from
"shorts" or coarse flour , and soaked
in cold water. The next two weeks
their ranee should be blue grass free
from weeds or anything likely to trip
them , as they arc easily thrown upon
their backs , and can rarely get np
without help. Of varieties any of the
large Toulouse , Bremen or Chinese
oneso , and of ducks , tha Muscovy ,
Black Cayuga , Pokin or any large
breed that may suit the fancy. I
hope to be able to elaborate some of
the generalities here given at a future
time.
