Flood , who is the keenest of the
party , and who has managed the stock
manipulation , is probably the most

utes his "points" through a private
Bocrotaiy and a number of "cappers. "
The public bites and in turn ia invaria
bly bitten Flood gave Johnny a point
onco. Johnny was worth $2,500,000.
Ho is worth $250,000 less than noth
ing now. Points were given to
thousands of others and most of them
lost by their ventures. Many a
prosperous merchant and thousands
of well-to-do people in the middle
walks of life lost their all in the
meshes of the net so adroily set by
Flood. Ones man , however , was too
deep for the big firm. They sent Jim
Keona a point by one of their para
sites. Keene was delighted , and set
up the champagne. Then he went
and "coppered" the point did the
opposite of what was advised. When
ho went to Now York to wrestle with
the bulls and bears of Wall street he
took six millions with him six mil
lions that the bonanza men could not
reach.
Flood , however , undoubtedly was
sincere when he told U. S. Grant , Jr. ,
whit stocks to invest in if he wished
to make a little pile. The younp- man
ventured and pocketed abut $300-
000. But this was only a round
about method chosen by Flood to give
his prospective son-in-law a lift. It
would look much better Flood
thought , no doubt , than for him to
cive young Grant the money nntripht.

at the rate of $10 a ton. Partie have
been compelled to import cargoes of
ice from Halifax and Maine in order
to meet the requirements of this busi
ness , but even with that
supply is Inadequate and the
Knickerbocker ice company will
not make any further contracts. It is
not balieved that the present condi
tion of Rffiirs will exist much longer ,
and the hnpa is expressed that an im
provement will speedily set in. There
[ s not much demand just now in Eng
land for fresh meat , nor will there bo
until the cooler weather sots In , and
It is believed that prices will then ad
vance to a point which will leave a
margin of profit for exporters. The
ive cattle trade is also reported to be

cattle dealer has received a cable dia-
jatch this week to the effect that on a
ionsignment of 900 cattle one export-
nr has sustained a los to the extent of
$27,000.

The steamer Grsece , which arrived
ast week , brought ninety-seven horses
ses of the Percheron breed , for M. W.
Dunham , an importer of horses , who
ives at Wayne , DuPage county , III.
This is a small villxge about 30 miles
west of Chicago. The horses were
taken to stables on Greenwich street ,
ind afterwards sent went to Mr. Dun-
mm's stock farm at Wayne. About
cne-focrth of them are colts ; thereat
are full grown Ftallions ; their weights
ranging from 1400 to 2000 pounds.
This is the largest importation of horses
ses of this kind ever made inlo this
country. Mr. Dunham to a Tribune
reporter , while speaking of the impor
tation of horses :
"William Hum's , of Moorestown ,
N. J. , brought the first Peicheron
stallions to this country in 1S39. He
was travelling in Europe for his
health and saw some of these hones
at work in Franco. He was so ttruck
with their strength that ho deter
mined to bring some of them home
with hi-n. Accordingly he shipped
four to this country. Two of them
died , however , before they reached
Moorestown. Clnr'es ' Fu'ling on , of
Ohio , imported the next lot in 1851

during the last of Juno or the first of

work is done then , and the horses are
Cheaper than at any time of the year.
Then , August ia a good month to
bring the horses over to this country ,
as the voyage is usually a quiet one ,
and as they acclimate better if brought
over here just before the cool wrather.
All the horse-buyers go to Perche
during the months of June and July ,
and the region ia pretty well cleaned
out of its horses now. If you were
in Perche to-day you would have hard
work to find a first-class stallion in
the whole district. "

there ? "
' 'From 8800 to S2000. It also costs
a creat deal to import them. I had a
special train from Percho to the sea
coast , a thing never heard of before
in France. In 1873 it cost me ? 500
for every horse I brought across the
ocean. Now , however , when I bring
them in large numbers it costs a little
more than half as much for each. It
will cost me $100 a car for my special
tr&in to Wayne. I put sis of the
horses in a car. I insure them when
I start , and I have to pay 4 or 5 per
cent , on the insurance. You see there
are largetfjsks in this business. When
I sell these stallions , however , I will
get from Slf.OO to $3000 each for
them. "
