AMUSINO CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN TUE CENSUS CLEKKS AND AN ADDITOll. Washington Correspondence of The Hartford limes. According to the report on the wealth of Montana , there are but two goats in that territory. The census office clerks thought there must be something wrong about this , BO they wrote to the auditor of the territory to look it up. They argued and con vinced themselves that there must be more tlun two in such a big country as Montana. But the auditor answered that the renorta of the enumerators showed only two. The auditor also reported that ono of them was on a farm at one side of the terri tory , and the other at the other end. Ho gave the names of the farms they were on and their owners. The census office clerks held an indig nation meeting over the information and resolved that the auditor was lying. The discovery vras made that one of the goats was valued at $10 while the other was assessed at only § 5. The C2HSU3 clerks then made up theirminds individually and collective ly that they had the auditor certain. A letter was framed asking him to ex plain the wonderful difference in the valuation of the two animals. It was aho suggested that possibly ho had overlooked the existence of other goata in their territory , and that If he wouid bo BO kind as to make a special inquiry he would oblige the census office and "probably perfect the otherwise unusually correct enu meration of Montana. " The au ditor of Montana answered In a week or so. He said he did not desire to be quarrelsome or unaccommodating , but that if he was bothered any more about those "two damned goats" ho would know the reason why. He added in explanation that the reason why one was put down at § 10 was be cause he was worth § 10 , and the one put down at $5 was worth but § 5 ; that he had done his whole duty and did not want to hear any more about the matter. Strangely enough , every word in the letter was written plain except the adjective "damned. " It was thought by some to be "hundred. " This would umko it appear that were ' two hundred goats" in that Territory , \hioh was agreed to bo something more like it. A council of war was held and it was decided that notwithstanding it might further cgiUte the auditor to be asked agtin to explain his figures , yet it must be done. A Virginia clerk , a man who "has a record" as a braVe man , was requested to address a letter of in quiry to the auditor again , asking _ if he wanted to be Uliuorslood as saying that there were 2t)0 ) goats in Montana and if 30 to state what counties they were in , and the census office or at least the wealth , debt and taxation division of it would bo glad to know the facts in the ccse. The answer was anxi-i's'y looked for. It came yesterday rasbrief. Its words were : "I * n. Jemocrat with a big D and onl. -.ogniza a Union with a big U. Tii * re are but TWO goats in Montann. I have come to the conclusion that the whole damned crowd in the census otlico are crazy , and I don't fight but only pity crazy men. " A Woman'a Terrible Task. Carson ( .Vev. ) Api > cil. On July 2nd Mrs. Chatiermng , a lady living on Nevada street , got exci ted over the accounts of Tanner's fast , and announced that she would refrain from talking forty dayp. She began at 9 o'clock in the morning and at 10:30 : her pulse was BO feeble from ex- Inustion that the physicians feared she would die by noon. At 11 her heart beat but 26 a minute , and her respirations warn hardly noticeable. Her friends hero urged her to discon tinue her terrible task , and told her some gossip about a neighbor. On hearing it she immediately rnshed from the house and going across the street met a lady friend and talked till 0:30 : tlvct night , and is now fully re stored. Her record of nearly two houra and a quarter of absolute si- lenoo now takes its place at the top of the list. Congratulatory letters are pouring ia from all sides , and she has had several offers to take the lec ture field. Feedmcc Horses. More horses are annually killed or injured by over-feeding and injudic ious feeding than by starving and most other causes. In horses wo can detect as many different temperaments and dispositions as in man , tlnugh but few horse owners take this fact into consideration in ihe management of their horses , particularly in that mrt of it relating to food and feeding. 3omo horses are natural gluttons , and ; hey must bo seen to carefully or they will , at t'mes , be apt to serioualj injure themselves by feeding lee fast , while much of the food they consume will pass through then : undigested , for the simple reason that it was swallowed before it ha : been properly masticated. Wo like to see what is termed a "good feeder , ' ( ono who does not mince or pick ovei his food ) but then wo are not at al partial to the ravenous ono. Such i liorse as the latter named will dive into his feed with mouth wide open and invariably take more at a mouth l than ha can either hold in hi mouth or properly masticate. Then are several ways to fix such fellows ono way being to mix some little fim hay with his oats , while moisteniiij the oats or feeding cut food prevent him from pandering to his greedy pro ponsity. A horse with a delicate ap petite is usually a tender , dclicat animal , and not at all desirable. The trouble with moat persona whi keep horaea , no matter whether 01 farm for farm work , or for drivinj purposes , is , they feed them too mucl hay ; and to this cause can be attnb uted the general sluggishness oftei manifested by the horses until the ; have been working a couple of hours while the wind ia also much impaired Night ia the only time when ha ; should be fed , especially to animal uaed for quick work. Even the snoi plow team should have but little ha ; at morning and noon feeds , but give generous supply at the evening meal By doing this , your horse will keep i butter spirits and condition , and fre from any tendency to "pot belly , which horsemen so much dislike"t' ' see. Clover as a Fertilizer. Waldo , in The Ohio Farmer , ssys I cut a crop of clover h y I - < season and turned under the ston . growth some s'x weeks befory * ' 'ng th wheat. The result is a tpl-v.didcro of wheat , heavier than on adjoinin land in the same field that van heavil manured. Here is an additional proc of the value of clover. I have twentj ono acres of wheat on thia favra , whic was so run down three years ago tha it was not supposed capable of pro ducing a paying crop. One-half c thia field I manured with stable mi nure , at a cosy of not less than § 10 ( the other half had the one crop < clover turned under , and the vrhe : is much heaviest on the clovered Ian the ten and a half acres of m ! nured giving 247 shocks to 343 on tli clorered half of the field. I estimal the average per acra on the twenti one acrea at twenty bushels per acri but if it should thresh to the shock ; well as my wheat did last year , tl average would be above twenty-thn bushels. As long as clover will gl Bach results aa this on my land I shj Up praises loudly , W § 3 worth of bone meal to the acra on a two-acre strip through the middle of the wheat sown on the clover land-1 , and there was no difficulty in telling as you drove round the _ field with a reeper when you came into tha atrip thus fertilzed. j This is the fourth year I have grown the Fultz wheat , and it shows no sign of deterioration. It has produced more uniform crops and given better satisfaction than any wheat I over grow. It sttnds up bitter , produces more grain to the straw , and is lees liable to loss or damage. I am plad to be able to give this testimony , for it has been reported that it could not be successfully giown year after year on the same farm. Schemes for Crossing the English Channel. The proposed channel tunnel be tween England and Franco seems likely to bo builr. One shaft haa been sunk to the required depth , and it is as-erted that in about eighteen months at least two and a half miles will have been bored under the chan nel , and that the work will bo com pleted in four years , probably by boring from each end. There are evi dently , however , contingencies , such as a break in a rock , which may de stroy the whole enterprise. Mean time another bold scheme for crossing the channel contemplates a line of steel tubes sixteen feet in diameter , ballasted so as to make it weight , ono and one-fourth tons to the foot less than the water displaced , and held nt a depth of thirty feet below the sur face ( so as not to impede navigation ) by being anchored by chains to cassions sunk to the bottom. Through thisfloating tunnel of twenty miles erse so it is proposed that railway trains shall pass. Call for Ropnbllcan County Conven tion.
