A MULATTO \VOMAX TUMfINO WHITE AND A WHITE WOMAN TO A DAEKER HUE. BRIDGEPORT , August 1.Vith the exception of an irregular-shaped dark spot on each cheek , Mrs. Samuel J. i' . Wiles , of this city , would easily pass for a Caucasian. Aud yet ehe was born a mulatto , as scores of peo- who have known her all her life are ready to certify. Each of the spots is abaut the size of a silver dollar , and about the color of a dark copper cent. The real of her face ia a poiitive white , of a some n hat leaden hue , whiln her hands and arms are unnaturally white , showing cot the slightest trace of either a dark or a ruddy tint. The case has excited much interest amonjt MM. Miles' arquaintances , especially on the part of the colored paople who know her , and among the doctors. They havu seen her grad ually growing whiter from year to year , until it seemed to be merely a question of time when she would be transformed into a white woman. Some of the colored people eay that they have heard of similar cases before , and that it is an unvarying rule that when one of their race be comes wholly white death speedily ensues. Mrs. Miles herself is not less die- tressed than puzzled over the myste rious change. She has repeatedly consulted doctors since it began , to see if the process could not be check ed , and has been heard to say that she would give § 10,000 , or any sum she might ever possess , if she could bo restored to her natural color. Her husband a tall , full-blooded negro , is a whitewasher and preacher. They have two children , whose complexion is of a rather darker shade than that of a mulatto. Mrs. Miles herself is a pleasant , mild-spoken woman of lady like and intelligent appearance , and is about thirty years of age. Her hair has a slight , kinkinesa , but hardly enough to attract attention. She is very sensitive about the color change she has undergone , and cannot easily be induced to talk about it. It began , she says , about twelve years ago , just after she had recovered from a severe bilious attack , to which she was sub ject , She had sufferel from these at tacks since , but her general health was tood. ; "How did the change come out , " the visitor asked. "First , " replied Mrs. Miles , "there came out a white spot on the wrist. It kept growing , enlarging EO fast that I coul. see it spreading from day to day. Soon a spot of the aame kind appeared on the other wrist , and both kept extending upward until they spread completely over my arms and my face , except for these two spots that you see. The extension of the spots over these parts of my body took only about two months , but the skin affected has steadily been grow ing whiter , and the dark spots on my fae smaller. I suppose thoee now left will entirely disappear in time. " Mrs. Miles said that excepting her arms her body below her neckretained its natural color. "I felt badly about the change at first , " she went on , "not only because I was afraid that it would affect my health. It hasn't seemed to do this , and the doctors told me that probably it would not. But they couldn't seem to explain what caused tha change , and did not appear to think they could cure mo. They told me it was some peculiar skin disease they did not know much about , but thought likely it came from my liver. " Some physician with whom the writer talked said practically the same thing. "The subject isn't treat ed of much if at all m the medical books , " said he , "and I don't think it has ever been made a matter of spec ial study. About all you can say is that the change ia dua to some arrest in the color development , caused probablj by the failure of the liver to perform its functions properly. " Another case in the city , nearly aa remarkable ar Mrs. Miles' , is that of a white lady , whose skin lately began to change to a decidedly aatk hue. She is the wife of the Rev. J. G. Davenport , cf the Park Street Congregational churchand the change for a time was an occasion for much anxiety to herself and her friends. She had been in poor health for some time with a liver aflectionrivhich gives support to the opinion of the doctors that these color changes proceed from something abnormal in the workings of this organ. Mrs. Davenport be- gsn to improve in health lately , and the dark epots are disappearing , as the result , probably , of medical treatment and better health. Race Between a Bear and s Fig- Oregon Astorlan. Boars must bo very plentiful in the vicinity of Ilwaco. One was shot on Monday last back of the Aberdeen cannery ; and Captain Gray informs us that when he and Mr. Loomis the other day emerged from the portage on the weather beach , a fine bear of about SOD pounds was chasing a good sized hog. They halted their team to witness the race , that soon became so exciting that Loomis offered to bet the bear would win. As the bear was Loomis' favorite , Captain Gray had no choice but to back the pig , which ho did. Their presence did not disturb the contestants in the least. Piggy very cleverly doubled on bruin , but bear gained on him , and the porker made for the rocks which put out at the foot of the portage , and here com menced a regular dodge game , which gave the pig a chance to recover his wind. He could dodge and turn quicker than too boar , which began to ehow signs of fatigue , taking advan tage of which the pig made a break into the thick brush , saving his life and winning the wager for the captain. As the travelers had no arms bruin retired in safety , though Loomis wanted very much to kill him for making him lose his bet. Women at the Beach. New Haven Union. Kind reader , didst over sea two women bathe ? They emerge from their bath house looking aa if they had stolbii something and expected to see a burly policeman bob around the corner , clap his hands upon them , and exultingly cry , "rJow 1'vo got you. " Then they trip alo'ig half a dozen etep : , not altogether like Dundreary or a sandpiper , but somewhat resemb ling both. Then one says , "Oh , dear ! " and reaches down to pick a pebble out of her shoewhile the other takes the opportunity to yell like a pair of panthers , and then run back with all her might to the bath house. Her mate , of course , doesn't get the pebble out of her shoe , but gets sev eral more In to keep it from getting lonesome. Then the screamer tiptoes down to the piece and says , "What a fool I was ! " The other comes down , having secured a new invoice of pebbles in transit , and screams , "What is it ! " Aa it is nothing but a devil's apron-string and not a nake , the Ecraamcr again says , " "What a fool 1" Then they laugh. But they keep their eyes about them , and each month is always ready to emit a scream. By this time they reach the water's edge. A punny roller is ad vancing. It breaks a little way out 'i ' and as the line of foam is sent up the beach they turn and scamper with all their might. Then one says. "What a fool ! " And th'a other re plies , "Iknow it ! " Then they take hold of hands , determined to do or die. Another wave nukes them flinch and tremble and scream , just a littl but they beep on till the water reaches to what would he thair knees if they were men. Now they face each other , each holding the two hands of the1 other. Anybody who has seen the firemen at work on a hand-engine will understand the mo tion readily. They keep this up for five or ten minutes , talking like a brace of parrots all the time , till one of them screams with all her might and runs half-way to the bath house. She stops to remark that she knows ghe will die , and looking down sees the cau e of her scare a blade of eel-grass tightly wound about her ankle. Spunking up coutnga again , tbey seek the water onca more , and again the hand-engine manoeuvre is repeated. Then one of them whispers , "There's a man ! " And tha other says , "I don't care one bit , " and runs with all her might to f he bath house. Then the one who had Been the man saunters slowly after , picking up a shell or two on the way , pretendin to think there ien'tauch a thing as a man in creation. By and by they emerge from thebith houseand ostentatiously display the key , towels and bathing dresses ; chatting in most volubla manner. "It wa ? just lovely ! " one remarks. And the other saya she feels "so refreshed " , you know. A Donkey's Deep Grief. Hcmer Mining Index. Newspapers have often told stories about the affection that dogs , horacs and other animals have for each other , but wo have never heard of a jackass being accused of any such tender sen * timents. It is now our duty to record the faithful love onq donkey had for a companion whcthsdjLshjred his lot for BO long. L'ast week "W. D. "Wason went out to Tioga district on a pros pecting expedition , taking two jacus along to pack his blankets , tools and provisions. In coming down the mountain one of the long-eared freight transporters fell over a precipice and broke his neck. The other frightened the birds and the conies in their bur rows with the sound of his lamenta tions. Mr. Wdsson tried to coax the grief stricken mountain barge away , but the donkey only lifted up his voice and wept , and would not be com forted. Then ha essayed to drive with sticks raid stones the noisy beast from the scene of his lament. But drive ho would not. The donkey re membered how ho and hi beloved companion had foraged together from handy clothes-lines ; had in friendship masticated fence-posts and sections of barb-wire , and had contentedly nib bled such tender morsels as old gunny sacks and cast-off overalls had - , or as suaged keen hunger with old boots and oyster cans , and could not be in- duied to leave the spot. Then the cruel master beat him terribly , still his grief nerved him to obstiuncy. The master felled two or three large trees on his back , but to no purpose. Final ly thq master in despair took the pick off and loft him with his dead. The last seen of him he was eating the cropping of a quartz lodge and weep ing for his friend. Blocked ttie Trade. A citizen of Cass avenue , having a residence worth about § 16,000 , has a sign of "for sale"on the house , and the other day an old African , driving a stone blind hoise and a wagon which wobbled all over the road , drew up in front of the place just as the owner came out : "Boss , am dat place fur sale ?
