statement made by "J. W. A. " in his
correspondence to THE BEE of July
29 , wherein he iays that the Hon. E.
Whitcomb is virtually the founder of
the town of Friend , although Mr.
Friend homesteaded where the town
now is about the aime time 1870.

cited here July 13 , 1870 , and Mr.
Whitcomb , if my memory serves me
right , in December , of the same year ,
on land adjoining. I opened a small
store in my homestead buJdins ; May
1,1871. Petitinnei for and ebtained
a pnstoffice in Juno , the same year ,
which was called Friendville ; then , in
October of the sarao yetr , because I
refused Mr. W. as a partner in the
store , he starti-d a store about one
mile east of where our town now is ,
