Ooorgo Jennings , the well-known

yon , describes a queer bit'lo ivhich ho
witnwod one day last week between
n lizird and a scorpion. He pays tha
lisird , a blak one about e ght inches
in laugtb , came out of a pile of lum
ber and hit attention was first particu
larly attracted to it by seeing it bob
bing its head up and down in an ex
cited manner , occationally creeping
fonr/ird a fof fc or two. Looking in
tha direction in which the lizard
was creeping. Mr. Jepninss ob erred
a scorpion , sum * four inhc sin length ,
sitting upon a pile of niui-t saud triat
hud accumulated near ona of the
"luico boxes. Thinking ; tha lizard
meant to attack the scorpion , nd be-
ioy curioui to see what would ba tha
rerult of a battle betwten the pair ,
Mr. Jennings was careful to do noth
ing that would ninurb siiher. Tbo
lizard movtd quite near the scorpion ,
when itbi&rad itfl lf up on it forefeet -
feet and b-gan bobbing its h d and
bowing in a ludicrous nad bantering
way. The scorpion erected ita tail ,
which it vibrated in'a threatening
manner. The lizard circled around
tno scorpion , occasionally halting to
bow ai him. At length , however , the
scorpion attempted to cranl away ,
Tha moment he bdfan o awlmjj the
Hi rd dartsd upon him Itko a fluh
and adroitly Btizad him by th hst
joint of iho tail that which oontiina

which ia eitua ed the sting.
Having this hold of the
scorpion the lizard was safe from iu
sting , but had apparently no means
of doinany furthar damage. Present
ly the scorpion twisted himself about
and tried to get hold of the lirard
with hh o'awc , which are like the
claws of a lobster or crawfish , where
upon the lizird shook him as a dog

The most accomplished-looked col

Unfortunately Joe has an idea that ho

Tree Planting ,

Now ia the time to make ready for

our citizana who appreciate the desir
ablen 's of growing trees sutficiently

aw find themselves ready when the

rather to let them prow , for they will
zrow if permitted there must be
ortain preparations made. E-irth

reea into , for when ot'rred it requires
nonths and sometimes yean for the
iard , wood-like roots to so decay ns to

"ill a trea hole with these sods and
root-fillsd earth , and nn hour after it
3 thoroughly wetted there will be a
circulation of air through the mass as
.hough it were asponge. ' 'If the wild.
ness ia nnt k'Hed out of the Knnmo !
> y thorough cul ivatton , then special
means muat be adopted , and if the
nly object be tree planting this spec-
al preparation mu bs done at a loss
cost than by the iwul w.iy of break-
ng and fallow pi J win ? , and it admits
of immediate setting ot trees nnd
consequent gain of a couple of yens'
ime.
Where trees ara to be set in grnss
or "wild" ground , dig the holes not
es than threa and one ha'f ' foefc In
diameter nor less thnn two fe t deep ,
.hrow away tLe dirt and sods taken
ont or uie it to bank up the houba

with manure nor let a5 particle of
manure be in the esr'h ' , belter go to

ns having come from tha stable.
If tha trees ir * to ba tet this fall
these holes must be dug now. If they
are to bo sst next eoting , and that is
perhaps ber , the hnles must be dug
and failed this fall , and the trees
should be ordered now. When they
arrive , bury them in the ground , rcot
and branch , uitil sprin ? . Trees are
better for b-ing buried over winter
than if th'y Bt iod in thsir g-aftad lo

mediately re-set. Tha reasjn of this
is that the riots are necessarily
wounded , end the e wounded roots
must form a callous before there is any
root growth. By burying over-winter
tha callous ia fornvd while no evapor

Another thine ; don't suppose that
the nuwerymin has trimmed tha trees
as much as they should be. For the
aake of appearance he leaves tha top
branchsj uncut. Trim these off to

It is a deal of trouble to follow this
plan , is it ? Than remember that
n 'thing ' jrrod or desi'able ever ia pot

part. mu tbe paid in care.
