HOW HEE riKST P1ZOT OF OID MPC OCT T7HH A StmJHKH.KNIlCE. Alta Calfornia. An interestiHg correfp ndfiice has I tely pegged between Elliott Lrd > , of the United States geographical survey , and John Orr , the fint discoverer of old in Nevada. Under the sup vis ion of Iho director oj Jhe ceolpgtcal eun-ey , a history rf the'Coni-tirk dis covery and mininj developments on the east dope of Nevada is being pre pared. Mr. Orr , at present raiding ot Duncan's Mills , Sonoma ccunty.hps in his popseB'iin the first gold nugget known to hava been found in and Ui3 inquiries of Mr. Lird luve been in relation to the circumst nce of the discovery and the possibility of securing it from Mr. Orr , by donation or purchase , for the collection of min erals in the National museum at Wash ington. Jn conversation with Mr. Orr a day or two ago , he stated the facia relat ing to the discovery. He started with a large trin to come across the plains in 1849. Unusually uevere wea her was encountered ; tha roads were bad , and they were compelled * o apend tha wmter at Salt Lake. He left for Cilifnrni * ou the first wagon train from Salt Lake in the spring of 1850 , but the desert was not crossed until the last of May , because of high waters and the fact that their road had "to be cut through the snow until the Humboldt was reached. Orr had a partner named Nick Kelly , after whom Kelly's Ravine ia named , and in the company wai one Wm. Prouse , now living in Nurb City , about forty milei southeast of Salt Lake. Pronae had worked in nvuesin this state "Da- fore mines were discovered in Colons , and was a good prospector. Onee.ir- day of May , 18oO , the train clipped on the-edge of what is now known ai G ilden Canyon , near the Carson river , to let the animal * eod on some bunch grass found grow- in ? among the oage busli. Prousa t 'noon time took a milk-pan and going down te ihe eulohbeffon wa hing dirt , in fevr minutes getting color to th valae'of a few cents. Orr then named Ihophice Gold Canyon , still retained Ore was keeping a rude chart of the ccfuntry traveled over , taking bearings only north and south , and estimating the diit mces traveled over every day. Gild Canyon was marked on the ch rt , which wa ? lost by Ore ia 1855 , while returning ewt to be married. The tran soon after resumed travel , goin ? to the head of Carson Valley. There was met a party ot aeveu , who had left tha train at tbo sink to the Humboldt , intending to go In adrpnoe of California and select peed locations for the remainder of the party. They had been unable to cross the country , and had been loat in the snow ia the mountains for four or five days , unable to find the divide toHanstowu und seeking Carson to recuperuto. A ety in Catson for three wesks followed , when Orr , Bellev aud several others returned to Gold Canyon and resumed prospect ing. Kelley aud Orr wen t up the can yon until a little fork was reached , when work was begun. The pariy had few tuoh , and Orr had nothing but a butcher-knife. While Kelly was working Orr no ticed a very narrow place at the fork , where the water barely covered a tlab of tlate rock. Idly he examined it , and , noticing a small crevice neir the edge , drove the butcher knife into it , breaking out a pjice. The water run ning over ic washed away the undar- lyiug dirt , and in a few seconds Orr discovered a golden nugget whe-e tr , ' rock had covered. It was quickly moved , and afterward found to fc 88.25. This was on the first o' , ju 1S50 , and thirty years ago. Vrospect- ing was continued , and though gold dust was found in seyrora1 placeB in the canyon , Orr'a w ? A the only nutj- et found. Tha pavty laolced tools and iirovisio a , and being bent on reaching OaWorniav abandoned the canyon nnd nrrivcd Bt Leek Springs July 4.1850. Or/ offered the nugget to Kellf , who.i fused it , and it was the first piecto of gold hoover dug , Orr for a few ye vtt kept it as a souvoniron that account1 Of late years the inquiry as to the first disr oygry 0 ; 0j ] jn Nevada , and the BP ulement of the discovery upon Mr. Orr and hia nugget is not'for B'e. Mr. Lord writes that tha survey iv. their con templated work will acknowledge the first discovery as stated above. A Street < 7ollo < iuy. Chicago Tribune.
