DOWN UNDEE THE HUDSON
Mysteries of the Collapsed
Tunnel Where the Recent
Accident Occuredt
How the Workmen Dig Their
Way Through the Mud.
New York Times , Jul > 19.
Pilei of boiler-in'n pat ! s , a heap of
bricks ani tnnsor.s' materi-h , and n
collection of low sheds with an im
mense Brooke-Hack towering above
them , mark tha spot at the foot of
Fifteenth street , Jersey -City , where
the Hudson Tunnel Rtilroad company
hare commerced the mighty work of
tunnelling the Notth river. The
wo'k IB well under way , and ia being
pushed forward day and night , with
nnlet-upSundaysor holidays. Already
300 feet of the tunnel hare been com
pleted , 200 of which are under the
river it self , and within a month's time
thc workmen will be adding to ita
length at the rate of between four and
five feet every 24 hours. Great as
thii engineering enterprise ia , it ia aa
nothing , the projectors lay , campared
with the labor required to lead it up
to the present paint. This may seem
singultr.
THE WORKMEN AMD TBEIU MKTHODS.
The method of building the tunnel
ia different , it is claimed , from any
thing erer before attempted. The
principle is adopted of using compress
ed &ir to I'xcludu the water , evaporate
the moistu-e of the ails so thai the
Utter , by being thus dried , can be
handled a * , the heading , andii render
ed lass liable to cave in , and to aid in
upholding the iron and brick work
after they are ( .laced in position. Col.
Buskins haa secured a patent ia con
nection with the application ef this
principle , under which the tunnelling
ia being done. The land in this vi
cinity is lirgely of cinders , which have
been filled in , and it is so porous that
when the tunnel was first commenced
there was a constant escape of the air
which WAS f i reed into the excavation.
This was almost ronudied by burying
large sheets of canvas several
feat below the surface of the
ground. The lower the tunnel w ant ,
however , the more compact the filling
becime , and the leas annoyance was
experienced from this source. Now
that the silt has been penetrated , this
difficulty no longer exists. The pres
sure of tbe compressed air now used in
the tunnel is about 20 pounds to the
square inch. Tne two air compressors
are kept running day and night They
pump the air into the air reservoir ,
which is of tough boiler iron , o > lind-
rical iu shape , and has a diamater of
5 feet 11 inches A guage at its side
always indicates the pressure of the
air in the tunnel. From the reservoir
the air ia pumped into the tunnel
through the aiilock Upon
this supply / pur air and
a careful recognition of tie pressure
the lives of thu workman and the suo-
of the work depend , and a constant
eye is kept upon the m mments of the
gauge finder as it balances itself un
steadily over the dial. The tunnel
was gradually pushed downward from
the air lock until tha proper level was
retched , instead of being commenced
at the bottom of the shaft and contin
ued nn the required level. This wega
temporary device , and nfter the work

of 300 feet the heading was bulkhead-
ed , aud the wo'kmen turning m their
trucks , began to dig toward the ahxft
and to clear away obstructions in thii
direction. Here the grand arch at ths
mouth of the tunnel wM ba built. Ita
width will ba 32 feeta'.d i s henjh * 30
feat. Up n this work the men are
uow engaged.
Properly speaking , there will be two
tunnels thrown across the river , each
being 18 feet wide and 16 fe t in the
clear nhen completed. They adjo n
one another , but will ba separate and
distinct pieces of workmanship , unit
ing , however , under the giaod arches
a' , the working shaft on either aide of
the river. A single track will be Md
in each , and. aa one of them will al
ways be used in going in and the other
in coming out of the New York depot ,
collisions can never occur. The approaches
preaches to the tunnel on both sid s
of the rivar will be 26 feet wide and
24 feet hiuh in the clear , and their
walls are to be of the best hard-burned
brick , laid in hydraulic cement. In
this city the tracks will not be leaa
than 15 feet below the surface , and at
no point when the tunnel is completed
will ths surface be disturbed in the
streets except for entrance to and
egrets from the underground depot.
In shape these twin tunnels will be
nearly round. Their shells are cylin
ders made of boiler iron , about twen
ty-two feet in height and twenly feet
in breadth. They are made in sec
tions , which are welded together , and
the completed shells are pushed ahead
a * fast as the excavations are made.
The iron of one of these cylinders is
inch in thickness. The sections or
pUtes are 2 feet 6 inches in width.
Some of them are 3 feet and others 6
feet in length. On each of their four
sides are fUngee 2i inches in width ,
through which the plate is bolted to
every one of the plrtes around it.
The joints are broken as the plates
are welded together , to give additional
strength to the cylinder. As fast as
the cylinder is advanced the masons
follow and line it with * wall of hard-
burned brick two feet in thickness
laid in hard cement. As this wall
extends completely around the
interior it presents the form of an
arch against any outside pressure ,
whether vertical or lateral. Four
clause * of men are employed in build
ing thj tunnel miners , welders , la
borers and masons. At the heading
the miners advance with pick and
shovel , the welders bring together the
iron stc'ions , the laborers dispose of
the diggings , and the masons throw
up their brick wall The compressed
air , as has already been stated , evapo
rates ( he moisture of the wall of tilt
which is always before the minors.
Thus dried , the silt becomes sustain
ing , and can bo cut like cheese. The
mitien dig a thin semi circular open-
me ; at the top of tbe tunnel , only ex
cavating enough at a time to admit of
placing the top plates in position.
Tr-ese are then welded together , and
being always m advance of the miners ,
furnish a s rt of hood , protecting them
from any dai'ger ' overhead. The earth
beneath , or the eore of the tunnel , is
then attacked by the miners , who out
a series' * of sttira in it from top to bet
tom. On these stairs the welderi
work when bolting together the side
plates. The miners are always on the
top stair'anrT the mason * at the bottom
tom As f < tstu the cylinder'is completed
(
pleted the brick lining ii-l id. The
laborers then worj , tha mrf-XMl of the
core backward ioward th'i'sbJtft , filling
the tunntlloVdepthhalf way up the
tides with it. Here the greatest p rt
of It wiU'remafn , furniihini ? a bMoe to
the brick-work ? and allowing the ce
ment to thoroughly harden , until the
tunnel is completed. The remainder
of the silt is mixed with water , and in
this puddling state is driven through a
pipe by rneuu oith'e compressed air
