OUR FOREST WEALTH.
AN myoRTAKT rEAnmE or THE FORTH
COMING CENSUS.
Boston Herald.
'The forestry department of the
present census will be the first tp.
preach of an attempt to obtain defi
nite knowledge of the vast forest
wealth of the United States , and the
results , besides being of interest to
natural scientists throughout the
world , will have great economic value.
The matter is In charge of Mr. Obu.
S. Sargent , the professor of arboricul
ture at Harvard university and the di
rector of the arboretum. He Is en
thusiastic in his work , and is prose
cuting It with thoroughness. He haa
already made a journey of investiga
tion through the extreme forests of
the southern states , and this week he
starts on a long tour through the re
mote west , to be gone until Octo
ber. In company with several emi
nent botanists , Professor Sargent wili
first visit Kansas to make a study of
the tree distribution along the margin
of the great plain region. Thence be
goes through Colorado , and perhaps
New Mexico , also to look at the heavy
timber growing in ttre Rocky Moun
tain canyons. He will then cross the
continent by rail , and go by sea along
the coast to Victoria. . Then , crosiing
through Poget Sound to Portland , in
Oregon , he will journey south with
his party along the const ward slope of

An Actress * Bath.
The Par'fian.
Mile. Lanre Heymann , who is a
charming actress and a dashing deml-
mondaine , has had a law suit -with the
architects of her bath room. The
bath room of Mile. Laare was a per
combination ' of elence , luxury
and ease ; there were Venetian mir
rors , Smyrna carpets , Turkish rugs
everything brilliant and costly that
can b imagiiied. One fine morning ,
Mile. Laure was preparing to get into
the bath , dressed like Mother Eve ,
when there was a loud explosion , and
windows , mirrors and chandeliers fell
about her with a tremendonn crash.
Mile. Laure , thinly clad as she was ,
and with the modesty for which she is
famous , fled from the scene of the dis
aster Ingreat terror , and the valetand
the maid and the concierges , male and
female , opened their eyes wide on see
ing this naiad rushing among them
and seeking protection. It was after
ward discovered that the gas fixtures
had been poorly put in , and that this
was the cause of the disaster. Mile.
Laare sued the architects and won.
The World's Coffee Production.
London Times.
The four great coffee countries of
the world are Brazil , Java , Sumatra
and C ylon. Thedati and figures for
1879 show that Braz'l itself has pro
duced an extraordinary quantity of
beans. Hitherto , 250,000 tons have
been considered f s a good yearly figure
for Brazil ; last peir , the export alone
amounted to 273,000 tons. But the
consumption of coffee in the country
itsi If now amounts to 00,000 tone ,
Trfisin th total yearly products of
Brazil to 333,000 i < ns. Fortunately
for the planters in ether parts of the
world , ci ffeo has erofii into a neces
sity in the United States , and , thanks
to this , ifa pric3 has risen. Although
th so'l of Brazil , especially for coffee
culture , in very extensive , yet Ihe
difficulty of obtaining labor daily
becomes greater , and this ren
ders it doub'fttl whether the above
tijiures can be much exceeded. The
crop in Java and Sumatra was esti
mated at 04,000 tons for export ; the
consumption of the inhabitants , al
though the popula'ion is double that
of Braz'l ' is not half of that of the Ja-
ter country. The production in Ci'v-
lun , though uri'ater tha'-i that of 1878 ,
shows a falling off when compared
with former years ; there were m all
11,200 tons exported frum that ishnd ,
the native consumption being very
sm ll. Coffee is , besides , grown in
Centra ! America , in several of the
South American Republics , in the
.British and other colonies of the Wet
Indies , in Havii , Cuba , Porto Hico ,
Anbia , Mauritius , Reunion and along
the northeast coatt of Africa , in Li-
bo'ia , and the African West Coast , in
Manilla , Celebes , and femM1. of the
of the Pacific , and , lastly , in
'
British India. But the total pro'duc-
Hon of all thete regions does not roach
hi lf of the exp irt tit the four chief
countries named above.
