Prof. Comstock , the rntomologiit of the agricultun'l epar'mtnf , h s been inveitijaiing the character and habits of the army worm , and in hb forthcoming report augg'-efei tha fol io wing remedies ; The bt t means of preventing the occurrenoo of this pest in cuHivaUd fields will be to keep watch of any extensive tract ) of lowland which may be in the neighborhood , and if any army worms are discovered deilroy them , either by burnin ? over the land , if possible , or by poisoning with ar senic , .Paris green , or London purple , or by any other moans of which ( ha local conditions will admit. In fact , it would be well to burn over all the low lands in the vicinity each winter , thus destroying the hibernating in- 83Ct8' v In case the worms do appear in cul tivated lands the best pi in of action to follow i to prevent the spreading of the insect. This may be done by destroying them , or by confining them to the nelds in which they appear. Tha best method of destroying them is by crushing with rollers , or by poisoning with arsenic , Paris green , or London purple. Either of these sub stances carrbe applied rapidly by mix ing with water and using a fountain pump or garden syringe. In many in stances , however , these remedies are impracticable. The second line of defense remains , and , if well carried ont , the result will not merely be the con&uing of the worms to the fields in which they ap pear , but the destruction of them also when they attempt to migrate to other Held. This is done by the means of ditches aud pits dug around the in fested fields , or that to be pro- tectel. The ditches can be made quite rapidly ; first , plow a furrow with the "land side" next to the field to be protected , and then n ith a spade make this side of the furrow vertical , or , if the soil be com pact enough to admit of it , overhang ing. When the ditch is completed , holes shouM be dug in it from one foot to eighteen inches deep , and from twenty to thirty feet apart. The sides of these holes should alee be vertical , or , if possible , overhanging. The worms , unable to cl mb up the verti cal aides of the ditch , will crawl along the bottom of i nnd fall into the holes , where they will soon-perish. Where the soil is sandy , so that the ditch cannot be made with a vertical eide , it should be due ; deeper than in other cases , and the side made as nearly perpendicular ai possible , so hat when the worms attempt to crawl up , the sand will crumble beneath them and cause them to fall back a ain. BesleRed by a Bear. Bod'e ' ( Cal. ) Free Frees. Mono county presents a grJnd field for conquest for the enthusiastic bunter - ter of the lower country , where such small fry OB quail , ducks and rabbits are the only game that can be found to ehoot at. Up here the grizzly bear roams about , seeking whom it m y devour. Below Bridgeport thia native of the woods is beginning to be trou blesome , on account of its frequent approaches to civilisation. A few days go a teamster , who had in charge an 18-mule team and a * heavy load of freight , was delayed several hours in bis progress by a qrizzly. He had hauled the heavy wagon to the top of hill and left the "baotion" at the foot. It being about dinner-time , he .eft his team * andj. returned to he foot of 'the Hill to partake ; f a lunch , and was seated ii the load enjoying his frugal repast , vheu there appeared at the rear of the vagon a huge grizzly. The bear seemed to enjoy he situation , and was not at all wor- ' led. Occasionally he would sit on . lis haunches and look at the teamater , md then content himself by picking " ip the pieces of lunch thrown to him. ' .n the meantime the teamster j-iew lervous , fearing that it was a "gone ame" with him. Hia wife and chil- Iren in Caraon were thought of , and he trip to Bodie seemed dubious , ) rhe animal remained there about two tours , and concluding that it was of 10 use to slay , walked off to the vooded hills. The teannter made for he wagon on the hill , and the few ) ray hairs that are now seen distfib- ited amongtt his raven locks are at- ributod to thia interview with bruin. > A Woman and a Oow. etroit Free Press. North & * a Juan Times , Jus 26. Th truth of the fo'lowing ' wonder ful enako story IB vouch for by Thomas G. Smith , who received the statement from his daughter , Mrs. Gardner , who resides at Columbia Hill. List weejc a daughter of Mrs. Pickle , who resides a few miles from Columbia Hill , in passing along the ditch of tha Eureka Lake Company , near that place , oame across a tin can on the bank of the ditch , which had been used by Air. Gardner , the ditch tender , as a drinking eup. T.io girl , only 13 yeara of age , picked up the can , and , looking into it , discovered a large rattlesnake coiled up at the bottom tom of the can. Nothing frightened , she determined to capture his snake- ship and carro it home , and with this purpose in view , she wont off a short distance and procured a hammer , and then returned to the spot where she had placed the can. She then , with the hammer , battered in the sides of the can in such a manner as to prevent the snake from escaping. She then picked up the can and carried It , with its contents , to the residence of Mr. Gardner , nearly a mile distant , and called Mrs. Gardner out to see her pet. Mrs. Gardner , upon being informed of the contents of the can , begged the girl not to open it ther * , but she per sisted in doing so , but at the u'gent request of Mr * . Gardner she consent ed to cut off the head of the snake with an ax on his attempting to escape from the can. The x was procured , and with it she pried open the can , and when the snake crept out of it she deliberately cut its head off with the ax. The snake was a large one , and contained ten rattles.
