How Daniel Webster Exposed
a Man-Who Shot Himself
. After .Robbing Himself
on the Highway.
, j
A curious light ia thrown on the
case of Whittaker by a story in ivhich
Mr. Curtis tells in his Life \Vebster
of the alleged robbery and wounding
of Major Goodridge , of Massachusetts ,
sixty years ago , as investigated and
exposed by Mr. Webster. Mr. Cur
tis' narrative is to clear and interest
ing that The New , York World repro
duces it in his own words : .
Goodridge was a person of previous
good character and respectable stand
ing , who profetsed to have beea
robbed of a large sum , of _ money at
9 o'clock in the night of ie"berabor ) 19 ,
181G , on the road between Exeter and
Newburyport , soon after passing . .the
Essex Merrimac bridge , on his way
from New.Hampshire into Massachu
setts. Among the proofs of the' rob
bery -was 'a pistol-shot through the
left hand , received , ns he laid , before
the rqbbers pulled him from his horse ,
he and one of his assailants dis
charging their : pisk'ls a't each other at
the same instant. He was then ,
according to his account , dragged from
his horse and across a fence into a.
Geld , rubbed and beaten until ho was
senseless. On his recovery ho went
back to the toll house on the bridge ,
where ho appeared to be'for a time in
a state of delirium. But he had suf
ficient self-possession to return to the
place of "tlie robbery with some'person
who accompanied him with a lantern ,
where his watch , pspers and other ar
ticles wira found scattered , rn the
ground. On the following' day he
vvint 'to Nowburypcrt and remained
there ill , at intervals in a stats ) of realer
or simulated froncy for several , no iks.
Having regained his health 'he sot
about the discovery of the robbers ;
ami so general was the sympathy for
him in a very orderly community that
his pians were a'ded by tho. in
nocent zeal of nearly the whole
country side. His first [ charge ,
was agaitut the Kennistons , 'two poor
men who dwelt in the town of sNew
Market ; New Hampshire , on the other
side of the river. In their cellar , ho
found a piece of gold.jWhich he id'en-
tiObd by a mark which be said ho
placed. ' on all his money , and a $10
note which he also identified , as his
own. The Kennistons w.rdsrreeed ( ; , _
oxaminedand , held for trial. He next
charged the toll gatherer ; one Pearson
*
son , ai an accomplice , and on1 .his
premises , with the aid of . .a witch-haz
el conjurer , ha also found some of. his
gold and pacers in which it had been
wrapped. Peawon was arrejted , ex
amined b'efore two magistrates , and
dischargedGoodridgo thtn complained - ,
plained , against one Tabar , a person
who lived in Boston. Finally he ,
folio wed , a man named Jackman to
the city of New York , in4 whose
house ho swore thst ha also discovered - '
ed some of his marked wrappers. _ The
machinery o'f an executive requisition
was , put into motion and Jackman was
brought into Massachusetts an'd lodged
in jail. He and Taber'and the Ken
nistons were indicted , for robbery in .
the county of Essex. So cunningly
had this man contrived his story that
tbo popular belief was entirely with
him. The witch-hazel'evidence prob
ably did not disincline the populace to
believe him. But it is even said that
there were few members of the bar
who did not regard tha case of the
Kennistons as desperate. There were
some"however , , who believed G6od-
rich's story to be fake , and these par-
ions sent for .Mr. Webster io. un
dertake the defence of the ac
cused. The indictment against
labor was nol. pressed. ' , That ; against
the Konniitons came on for trial at
Tpswich in 'April , 1817. They had
nothing on which to rely but their
' character nnd the
previouS'gopd nega-
ivo fact that since the supposed
robbery they nad not pasted any money
ior were seen to have .any , and the
inprobabilitios with which their ad
vocate could develop fn. the story of
joodridge. The theory of thq .defense
vas that Goodridgo was bis-own robber
ind had fired the pistol shot through
iis hand.
In the power of cross-examining i
vitnesses Mr. Webster had no superior
if the day , and his reputation in this
espect doubtlessly aided the impres-
ion which .he prodnced.npon ( ha jury.
There were traditions "which had
ome over theborderf rom New Hamp- \
hire of his terrible skill in baffling
he deepest plans of perjury andfraud ,
rhich excited the jury to the closest
Mention to his method of .dealing .
nth Goodridge. They saw his well
oncocted story laid bare in nil itt ini-
irobable features , while every aid was
iveh to him by Mr. Webster io de-
ciop suggestions which could ( be set
i'ff against .the theory lh t the Hatter
neant to maintain. But when Ml the
ividence for and againtt Goodfidge's a
ividence had been drawn out , jand it
amo .to summing up , there remained
wp obvious difficulties in the way'of '
hat hypothesis. One of them was :
hat no motive had been shown ! for so ,
trange an act as a man's falsely pre-
ending to have been robbed and
harging the robbery upon inno-
ent people ; the other that the
heory of Goodridgo being himself a
obber apparently made it necessary
obelieve .that he bad proceeded in
his fraudulent manufacture of proofs ,
the extremity of shooting a pistol
mllet through .his own hand. These
ery few formidable difficulties , for
he'law of evidence , as administered
our criminal jurisprudence , ' very
iroperly regards the absence of mo- ;
ive for an act , the commission of ,
rhich depends : on circumstantial
iroof , as one ofthe important jhings
be weighed in favor of innocence ; )
n3 as to the shooting , it was'certainly
a high degree improbably that a
nan would maim himself in order to
maintain a false statement that ;
le had .been robbed and maimed , by >
omo one else. But in grappling
rilh these difficulties , Mr. Webster ;
old the jury that the 'range of human
lotives is almost infinite ; that a de-
ire : to avoid payment of his debts , if
te owed debts , or a whimsical ambi- >
ion for distinction , might have been is
the bottom of Goodridge'a conduct ,
nd that having once annnounced it
timself to the communnity as .a man.
rho had been' robbed of a large sum
nd baa ten nearly to death , he had to :
o on and charge somebody with the >
ct. This was correct reasoning , but
till no motive had been shown fortbe }
riginal pretense ; and if there had
tot been some decisive circumstances
developed on the evidence ,
is not easy to say how
his casa ought to have been
ecided. These circumstances make
necessaiy to believe that , although
roodridge had already discharged the
istol which wounded him , he intend-
that result. His story was * that the
listol of the robber" went off at the mo-
lent when he grasped it'with his left i
and. Yet according to the testimony
the physicians who attended him ,
here were no marks of powder on his
and ; and the appearance of the
round led to the conclusion that the
auzzle ef the pistol must have been
hree or four feet from his band , while
hero were marks of powder on the
leeve.bf his .coat , and the ball passed
hrougbHhe coat as well as' the hand.
Thirstate evidence justified Mr. .
Vebsterls , remafk.'tbat "all exbibl- :
ions are subject-to aciiaent.whether
erioug or ft'ropid theygo not al : o
proceed exactly as they ought to do. "
Goodridge , ho argued , intended to
shoot the 'ball through his coat sleeve ,
and it accidentally perforated his hand
also. _
Goodridge , however , returned to
the charge. Jackman was put on
trial at the next term of tha court and
the jury disagreed. At hii second
trial Mr. Webster defended him and
he was acquitted. These crimiml
proceedings were followed by an ac
tion for malscious prosecution in
stituted by Peareon against Gocdridge.
Mr. Webster was of counsel
ferine plaint'ff in this caee
The evidence was now still more
clear against Goodridge ; a verdict for
a large sum was recovered against
him , and the public at last raw the
fact judicially established that he
robbed himself. He left New Eng
land a disgraced man ; but no clue to
his motives was ever discovered.
Twenty yesrs afterward Mr. Web
ster was traveling in the western part
of the state of New York ; ho stopped
at a tavern and went in for a glrsa of
watsr. The nnn behind the
cjunter exhibited great agita
tion as tha traveler approached him ,
and when ha placed the glass of watsr
before Mr. Webster his hand trem
bled violently , but ho did not speak.
Mr. Webster drank the watar , turned
without saying another w6rd and reentered -
entered his carriage. The man was
Goadridge.
THE NEW WALTZE.
.AMAZING ABANDON OF THF NEW DANCE
ITS CHIEF CHARACTERISTIC.- * .
Correspondence Cincinnati Fnqu r.r.
Anew style of round dancing is in
troduced for every summer that for
1880 is now being taught by the mas
ters. I am learning of an expert , who
has whit he calls an aca-ieaiy in Fifth
avenue. It is a waltze-time and step
for a basis , bat with certain charac
teristics that make it remarkable.
LaU year the innovation was a sliding
step that was a sere trial to short leus ,
snd very difficult to do gracefully. It
was a modification of the much-abuaed
"Boston dip" which , in turn wai a
departure from the steady circling
waltz previously in vogue. The dan
cers hive been steadily abandoning
the quiet ways of former years , and
now we have wlut mint in reason be
accepted as the culmination. Proprie
ty can no further 0 in the direction
of the ballet. It has no distinctive
name that I have hoard , but might
appropriately bo cilled the Philadel
phia fling , because as I am told , it or
iginated in Philadelphia and has the
Highland fling's epace-coveriug qua
lity. It is danced by main strength
allied to agility , , and grace is a secon
dary con ideration. Many do dance
it gracefully , but that is owing to
their own natural ease of movement.
I have broken three coisat steels in
two evenings' practice , but am getting
on. In Its perfection , the Philadel
phia fling maybe described as follows :
The man is tall , muscular and agile.
The woman is slender , willowy and
wholly subjective to tbo movements
of her partner. He encircles hcrfinally
'with , his right arm , not around her
waist , but just below her shoulders.
Withhis left hand he clasps her right ,
and holds it on his left hip. This
brings her close to him , and she is
kept snugly in tint position , not only
.because ho Hko it , but because if he
does not have a strong hold of her ho
cannot take her safely through the
dance. She literally sticks her nose
into his breast or shoulder , and somj
day a weak girl is to bo smothered to
death in the midst of her dtligHt. At
the least pugnoaes will bo common if
the dance remains fashionable many
seasons. It is not the correct thing
to stnnd still in this bunging atti
tude. The dancing must bigin
instantly on the couple com
ing'together , a" d a false step at the
start is a heinous terpiichorcan of-
fenao. The steps are thoeo of an or
dinary waltz , elongated to a surprising
extent , and accompanied by a swaying
moyemeut from side to side and Ire-
quent reversals all to rapid mujic.
This carries the cDUple here and there ,
now this way and now that , with sur
prising swiftness. Their course about i >
the room is orritic , and their bodies
sway in parfect accord , giving them ,
in connection with the long , quick
iteps , an appearance of reckless aban- E
Jon never before seen in social danc
ing. A dozen pairs thus engaged are
remarkable exhibit , and it is no
ivonderthat cautious mammas divide
their forebodings between the break
age and improper exposure of
their daughter's legs. A few years
igo , when .hoops were worn , such
dance would not have been modest
ly possible. Now the prevailing
ityle of dress prevents more than a
merely bewitching display of the
irondrously beautiful silk stockings
ivhich are fashionable. The clinging
scan'tinsss of the current tkirt , though
plainly showing every movement of
ihe dancer's legs , dees not reveal a
rreat amount of their immediata cov-
arings. Yielding her person implicit
ly to the guidance of her partner , she
flitting rpund and round , her feet
oarely touching .the floor. The violence
lence of the exorcise is excessive , and
'or a summer's danca this one is de-
idedly unsuitable. Poetically the
nroman will como out in a
rosy glow , with her eyes flash
ing , her boiorn rising and flailing
tremulously , and her breath making
sighs , i'racttcal'y ' , her dress waist
irill be spoiled by perspiration , the
powder on her face will bo meltedand
jho will gasp for breath like n horao
nrith the heaves. However , she will
anjoy the wi'd ' sport whatever may ha
ihought by the tired fellow who has
practically carried Her through it. If
itho , undulating uirls dance this waltz
in Jerseys-the limited skin tight ccs-
umes that are coming in the sight
vill be rather sttrtling , like the fain-
Mis dance of the naked Nautch girls.
Dhe "Philadelphia iln " is the poetry
f motion in-reckless metre , as I have
leacribed and experienced it ; but , it
nust not be supposed that it will ha
ilways or even generally danced in
hat way. All women are not light
f foot and slight of word. Conse-
luently there will be a great deal of
rotesquenefcs. Obesity and awkward- C
less are unfortunately common , and J
TO rendered comical when their pos-
lessors try to ekip nimbly. If either
f a pair is a bad dancer , both might
well be. A woman who humps up
ler back or triej to. keep her partner
a distance , or is heavy and slow , or
ittempts to decide for herself when to
everse , is a horror to the man who
ries to dance with her. That I take
n the word of my teacher. The man
vho steps on his partner's corns , or
iings her against other dancers , or l
ets her fall , deserves burning at the
itake. That I say from personal ex-
jerience.
