Truck" with die burglar * ' tools , the
firemen depended entirely upon
OLD FASHIONED INSTRUMENTS.
No. 1 , for instance , had nothing
more than a battering ram and a crow
bar. The crowbar was a round rod ol
steel , with one end pointed and the
other rounded into a handle. Its
days are numbered. The battering
ram , on tbe contrary , will over be a
formidable tool. It It shaped like
the piston of a syringe , the handle be
ing six feet long and made of very
hard wood. The ram is half iron and
half irood , is very'heavy , and is pro
vided \yith leather handles for the men
who batter with it. With half a
dozen men at the handle and four men
at the rain , it is easy to knock a hole
in the side of the house , and only a
little more difficult to break in an iron
shutter. Now , this company has a
set of tools fashioned after the
"kit" that was used in the robbery of
the Manhattan bank , tbo most com
plete and costly eet ever captured in
this country. For the firemen the
tools arc as well made as the originals ,
but they are considerably larger thau
those the burglars used. Only seven
of the burglirs' tools are given to the
Bremen , who had no need fir the
'bit" and other instruments that
word especially useful in safe-break
ing. The largest of the implements
is an octagonal bar of fine steel , four
and a half feet long. It terminates
in a sharp-edged bent claw , and its
upper end is fitted with a socket into
wh-'ch another bar for greater leverage
can be inserted. This "jimmy , " as it
is called , is warranted , on account of
its siza and strength , to

into or under which it can be inserted.
The matsivepidlocks ihnt are so com
monly used would not withstand its
force when one man welded it ; yet
half a dozen men can work together
with it. Another "jimmy" is of the
same shape , but much shorter. A
third implement is called a "dog jim
my. " On ono end it hai a hook with
which to tear out staples and wrench
off locks , and on the other two di
verging jaws , like the magnified end
of a track-lifter for the same uses.
Then there are a rivet-cutter , a steel
wedge for bursting iron doors , nnd
two sledges with which to hammer the
cutter and wedges. The sledges a-e
made of iron , but the burglars' sledges
upon which they were modeled were'
made of copper , presumably because
that metal is softer and therefore less
noisy. These tods are kept in a box
diat has been built for this purpose on
the forward fifth wheel of the machine
The box is open , and a strap holds the
tools in place. Assistant Foreman
James Heany , who was a member of ,
the old volunteer force , says that with
these tools the firemen can effect an
entrance into almost any building ina
minute's time ; but with the old-
fashioned tools is often took many
minutes to brake down a door or
wrench off a shutter , and meanwhile >
the fire within the building was gain
ing a headway that increased the diffi
culty in extinguishing it.
There is very little room left on tlio ;
hook and ladder truck of to-day for
further improvements and additions *
Ur Strapped on the body of the machine ;
are two fire extinguisher * , a calcium
light ijV ij burner and reflectors , and the
two cylinders , ono of oxygen and ono
f hydrogen , that constitute fuel fur
that brilliant light. Then there are
lanterns , and lately there have been
added red signal lights for stopping
elevated 1 railroad trains at night , and
flags for tbo same use in daytime.
There are a'so pitchforks wherewith hid
handle hay or the material used in d
mattresses , shovels to remove rubbish w
and to thfow sand on burning gas , wB
great knives at the end of poles with )
which the tin roof of a building can bo
cut , and hooks with which to roll up
the tin when it has been loosened.
There are peculiar hose noz
zles also , ono of which ii bent
and strapped to a polo for use
vaults ; another ends in four re
volving jets , and when let down into
inaccessible cellar or between the
decks of a vessel will saturate every
thing above , below and around it
within a distance of twenty-five feet a
from its center. Another nozzle is
called a "Siamese , " because it com
bines the stream of two engines ; and
still another , recently introduced , '
joins four streams ia one , just as the
new fire tower docs. There are also
extension ladders and the old fashion * ;
hook , the latter still frequently
used on tottering walls and stubborn
ceilings. Finally , in addition to the
axes , poles and lengths of hose that go
with the new nozzles , there is or
the patent smoke bag that the in
trepid firemen wear when entering a
building too full of smoke to permit
f breathing except by artificial i
means. The bag a rubber vessel a-
holding air enough for thirty minutes'
breathing is strapped on the fire
man's back , and its pipes lead to a oh
joint that fits his mouth. With tight
gloves 1 on , tight fitting spectacle-like )
boxes on his eyes , and a clasp like a
clothes-pin on the end of his note , he
feels his way in a dark and suffocating
atmosphere holding in one hand a
rope ( which is also tied to his belt ) ,
with which to signal to the men out
side , and having fastened to a button on
his coat a whistle on the end of a
rubber bag , with which he can call for
help without taking his mouth from
the orifice of the air bag.

many of his name , but we bear his
memory in specially grateful remem ;
brance as he passes away st'the age of

Ohio. It is to Mr. Jones that we are
chiefly indebted for friction matches.

timony. At first his matches were
made like a comb , a number of them
being on the same piece of wood , s
that they could be broken off as wan
ted. They bore the name of Lucifer
not , as is commonlysupposed , in allu
sion to the Prince of Darkness ; who is
sometimes erroneously called by tht
name , but in pleasant reference to thi
Morning Star , or "light bearer. "Hal
a dozen years after Mr. Jones Intro
dnced matches phosphorus was addec
to the composition and soon became
one of the leading combustibles used.
This useful agent had been known for
a hundred and fifty years , but it was
expensive to produca and risky to
handle. Modern improvement have
feducad its cost and vastly increased
its production. An immense quanti
ty of phosphorus is o\ery year used
in match-making , bing over ninety
par cent , of all that is produced. A
pound of the article will make a mil
lion matche * . Some matches are made
without phosphorus , cholorata of pot
ash being substituted for it So neces
sity do those useful aids to civiliza
tion seem to our very existence thai
it , is hard to contemplate a state ci
society which prevailed only half a
century ago in which the beat people
had to knock flint-stones together ,
when they wanted a light. Mr. Jones
must have had great difficulty at first
in parsu ding people that his matches
were better than flints. Old gentle
men and other * who wore set in their
fray their ways were opposed to the
innovation , and , especially when thev
heard mention of the name of Lucifer
in connection with it , suspected some
influence of tbe evil one. Even il
'good old Mr. Jiunca should not have a
monument erected to him , his memo
ry will bo honored in the fact that the
fruit of his happy thought has brought
comfort to a1 ! manner of people , and
that his invention , apparently so small
and so humble , has ttken a conspicl
cous place in the ivorlds inarch of pro
gress.
