How to produce ihia beef with the
least excoate , h w to supply the w > nts
of ur peopV , a'id.he increasing de-
tna'idi of .other iiatiot s with thw belt
quality rf beef at the Jo s' cost of pro
duction , are ques'ioiis of great ma-jni-
tudo.
Ihe inquiry is now being mide in
all parts of the Union , North , South ,
Easr , and West : What breed of caltla
is best adapted to my section of ccun-
tryj With my system of farming and
stock breeding , whpit kind of cat
tle will enable me to offer ti the beef
consumers of the world the bast beef ,
and at the same time roalizj for me
the hrgast income and greatest profit ?
The spirit of inquiry and investiga
tion exhib'ted on this subject , now so
common , is something quite new.
Formerly , when a man engaged in
cittle breeding , he did not take the
troub'e to inquire what would be best
suited to his locality , or hi inodo of
fanning and stock rais'ng. Ho sim
ply wont and fol'osved the fashion.
He would buy aud breed short horus.
This has been the custom here in Illi-
nos : for the last forty years ; and those
who can remember back a * far as
1819 , and hive bjon cl > so observers ,
will not fail to call t ) mind ihe many ,
many failures and wrecks that have re
sulted in this stata from "following
the fashion" in cattle breeding.
Having bcon a br-jedir of Short
horns for several years , I know from
experience that they are. not the most
profitable rattle for my mode of cattle
raising The chance purchase of a
few grade Devons , wintering them
.i'id afterward feeding them with my
grade Short-Horns , opened my eyes
to the f-ict tbat I was on the wrong
road Since Ihen I have devoted
myself mainly to breeding Davon cat
tle , and with the greatest satisfaction.
There are to day thousands of farmers
all ovsr ? tliif country engaged in fol
lowing the old fashion , singing the
praises of some fancy brood or noted
end popular family , working aud
toiling , aud making nothing.
All pei-sons ii.to whcso hands this
papyr may Ml that have had any ex
perience with Devon cattle , will con
fer a favor on the undersigned , if
th > > y Will make known to mo the re
sult ' of sucli experience ; especially do
I ask information from those who
hwchad ; an unfavorable experience
with them. If there is any one spot
on , thw cc nlineut where Devon cattle
have i J been fairly tested and found
wanting , or have failed in any respect
to i give entire satisfaction , it will be
esteemed i a great kindness be in
formed j of the particular ! of such fail

In presenting the claims of my fa
vorites , , the Deveus , to public consid
eration , it is not my purpose to de
tract i from or 'deny the merits of the
Shorthorn { or any other breed , nor in
many to depreciate the efforts of in
telligent and enteiprising breeders of
other pure-blooded cattle to improve
the t st > ck of the country. Such a
course would be both puerile and rep
rehensible. I would , if possible , per
suade cattle brooders from the great
folly of trying the breed "according to
the fashion. " | To illustrate : Farmer A ,
of la'go means , great skilland , unusu
al carej engages in cattle raising ; he
his rich aud extensive pastures , well
filled corn crib , warm stables and
sheds , and he succeeded. Five or six
of his neighbors , without his means ,
skill , rr conveniences , try to follow iu
his footstep ? and with the same breed
of I cattle make a failure , whereas , had
thuy salected a more hardy race of cat-
llo and ono better suited to their
means and method" , they too mi ht
have succeeded. My firm convic
tion is tbat fully half of Iho cattle
raisers of our State would reaiz3 )

narked success by a change of tactics 11t 11o
ind the selection of stock better t
xdapted to their condition and pur- r

Such may ask : "What shall I do ! yfl
Would you have me sell off my short flO
lorns , Herefords , high grades , or
-arefully ; selected native stock and
jegin anew ? " By no ineana. Keep
vhat you have , or select from them
four best cows and heifers , procure a
horoughbred Devon bull , and contin- >
< 3 to use him till you have all the '
ows and heifers of his gat that you
Tish to keep on the p'aco. ' You will
hen ] have a firm and substantial foun-
lation for your herd , and you can >
uild upon it such a structure as you
refer. You have a solid , rocky foun- :
lation one thair short pastures , lack
if stable room , hot summers and cold
winters cannot destroy.
In a recent convcr6.it ion with a
riend who has been a successful
Shorthorn breeder , but is now a feed- .
r and grazier of cattle , ho stated
hat should ho again engage in breed-
ng Shorthorns , he would secure Dev-
u cows to start his herd with , and as-
igued as a reason the great cheapness
keeping the hardy little Devon on
he ; farm irom year to year , compared )
rith Shorthorn ? , while ho might lese
ometbing in the size and weight of
lia ' steers , he thought this ICES would
10 < more than balanced by the savings i
feed. That the position is a correct
no , is beyond a question.
Now , kind reader , should you be
n inquirer on this subject cf cattle
ireedinp , an ! osk my advice , it would
ic simply this : Go forward and estab-
ish ' your herd on a solid foundation ,
irmly cemented with pure Devon
ilo d ; you can then safely proceed to
mild according to your fancy , and )
hould you , after a few years' experi-
ncu , conclude to use the foundation
natoihl for the building up of your
ntire herd , you will probably be
icher in purse and crib than by any '

Profits of Raisin Culture.
A writer for the Los Angeles HER-
ru , May IGth , makes the somewhat
stoundins ; statement that the profit of
aisin-grapa culture at the Rivers'da
olony last year ranged from " $100 to
tearly § 500 per acre. " Ho fortifies
his statement by such profits in do-
ail as leave hardly a doubt of its en-
ire ; truth. One of the successful cul-
ivatora is A. . H. WESTBROOK , inspec-
or of raisins of the lliversido Fruit
rowers' Association. His vineyard
ontains GOO vines , or about one acre.
ne half of these vines are five years ,
be other six years old. All the work
one on this vineyard from the pru-
ing of the vines to the shipping of
ho ralains was hired. The product
the vineyard was 202 boxes of rai-
ins of 20 pounds each. The prices
ingcd from § 1GO to $2.35 per box ,
nd the gross cash proceeds were398 , Bi (

er box , 13,56 ; total $88,46. Not
refit on one acre of GOO , $310 , 25 , or
fraction less than 52 cents to the
inc. Another vineyard of about two
cren , containing 1200 vines , owned
R. H. HBNDEESON , the vines being
ut four year * old , produced 450 boxes
raisins , which sold at from $1.50 to
2. pec box , and brought the gross la
am cf $320. The expenses were $82 , anE
and the net profits $737,75 , or a E
ttle more than ( & cents to the vine. ,

B. Uuaaell , fnim F80 vines , four years
old , purchased 280 bo\ea cf r.vVm ,
with a net profit of § 328 40. E.
Oaldwell , from 1700 siz-year old vines
covering about three acres , produced
540 boxes of r imi , at a net profit of
§ 1000.
In aU theae owes the soil was rich
alluvium , the vine well attended ,
abundantly irrigated to fatten and en
large the grape- , and great care given
to the manufacture of the raisins. It
is clear from the results tbat grapa
culture for raisins soil and irrigation
favoring the cartful cultivation is
one of the mojt profitable industries
of the state , and will bo , even should
prices fall from tjn cents to the low
figure of six cents p3r pound , at which
latter rate , transportation to the east
being reaionablu , there will always bean
an unlimited market. There U none
of the work , from pruning , cultivating
and irrigating the vinus , that can not
be done by boy * from 13 to 1C years
of age , and much of ir , such as the
drying and parking of the raisins , is
peculiarly suited Jo women and girli.
A family of fiva or tix , includ
ing the husband wifa ; might easily
manage a vineyard of eight acres , the
profits from which , at the above rates
or even 30 percent , less , would bo not
far from $2,000 a year , with a con
stantly increasing yie'il from tha
fourth to the twelfth yasr , at which
latter ago of the viuea the production
per acre would probably rcich iti
maximum. The net average proffis of
wheat culture on the very bast lands
do not exceed , from yea" to year , § 10
per acre ; upon ordiiury valley 1-uida
not $5. It would require avheat
farm of 209 acres on the very b.s * ,
and 400 acroi on averagj laud , to
yield a profit from year to year equal
to th.it of eight or ten a > r. s in raisin-
grape vines six ye-irs olrl , while tha
opital invested in the wheat farm and
the cott of product on would excosd
that of the vlnujard more twenty folJ.
The lliversido si Hit man t has , per
haps , peculiar ad\ant.tges. Abundant
irrigatim is one of Ihe essentials to
success in this binine's ; but there are
thousands of acres in the counties of
Sin Joaqum , Saciamonto , Sut'er ,
Butts , Coiuw , Yule , Stanislaus , Mer
ced , and even in the old abandoned
mining counties of El Dorado , Ama-
dor , Tuolonm , Placer and Nevada ,
where irrigation could be had as
choiply and profusely ai anyvrhero ,
for Email vineyards , by means of exist
ing canals or by windmill pumping ,
and where soil and climate are as
favcrable as at the Biverside for the
raisin grape. An addition of 60,000
acres to vineymU of this claia would
in six years after planting the cuttings :
contr.buta not leas than § 5,000,000 to
the aggregate profits from our vinicul
ture ; and we are confident that there
is ten times tbat amount of first-class
land in the etata rccliimable for tlwt
uso. 1 he indust-y is no linger an ex-

A. Remarkable Oaao of Penetration.
_ A few weeks ago as a young lady of
Salisbury , Md. , was setting into a carriage
riage- sewing ueed'o was by some
means forced into her thigh , bur , be
ing considered a trilling matter , little
or no attention was paid to it at the
time. Several days after this occur
rence , however , her ankle pimed her
i-ery much , and on examination it was
Pound that the needle \vai the cause
f it. In her efforts to get it out it

ing one part ( the eye half ) of il out.
Ill a point part remained , and two
lays after she felt that just below the
mee , but was still unable to get it b )
ut. Two weeks then elapsed and
'lie felt something in her throat , but
he obstruction was supposed to be a
B
ish-bone. After several efforts to ra-
nova it she at last succeeded , and it
roved to be the point part of the
leedle. Thus in a few weeks' time a
omrnon sowing needle enters a per-
lon at the thigh , makes its way down
o the ankle , then retraces its steps ,
md goes up the body and comes out at
ihe throat. This may appear to ba an
ncrediblc story , but it is true nover-
.heless. It is vouched for by a gen-
Joman of unquestioned veracity.
