U Laareyourtddresjr , First-class work CYCLONE , A Terrific Storm Strikes the City and does Consider able Damage. Two Houses Blown to Flinders , and Bams Torn from their Foundations. Telegraphic Communication Interrupted. Shortly after 6 o'clock last evening the atmosphere of the c'ty indicated a coming wind storm of extraordinary proportions. The barometer fell two inches within fifteen minute * , and the sky to tl.e west and north became overcast with a lurid glow. A few moments later the cyclone burst upon the town with terrible fury , sweeping heavenward immense cloudi of sand and diit , tearing off shutter * , ILjwinjj down fence ? , unhinging gates and dis arranging the telegraph end telephone wires throughout the city. The streets were deserted. The terrific velocity of the wind rendered pedestrianism more than dangerou * . Gusts of eand whirled and eddied along the thor oughfare and dashed against window and door , hiding sll view of the sur rounding landscape. In the north part of the city the effects were felt most severely. At i the commencement of the etorm the j I house of A. J. Miller , situated on ! Irene street , in Shinn's additon , was ' struck by the c > clone , lifted from its ' foundations and carried over the fence { into au adjoining lot , where it fell with a crash , which dashed it into a thousand fragments. Mr. and Mrs. Miller wore both in the building at the time of the catastrophe. Ascsistant Postmas'erO. 0. Campbell , who lives near by , hearing the noise of the storm , rushed to the window and saw the huuso fall , a long string of lum ber marking the spct. He hastened to the scene of the accident and found Mr. Miller lying en the ground , out side the ruins , bleeding and uncon scious. Mrs. Miller , though serioutly bruised , was conscious and able to walk to a noighb'ring residence , Mr. Milter at first was thought to be fatally injured and was berne on a rhutter to a ncighbcrs house , while Dr. Van Carop was summoned. After some time ho re gained consciousness and is now thought to be out of danger. His escape and his wife's from instant death seems nothing siot ! rf miracu lous. lous. The The centre of tbo kt'jroi appears to have been over Shinn's addition. At the same titno in which Mr. Miller's house was destroyed a small frame dwelling by Ittner's brick yard was al so demolished , no one however being hurt. Mr. Ittner's brick yard euffered heavily frcm the cyclone , twok-lnsoi brick just ready for burning being entirelydestroyed ! , entailing a loss ol atlewt500cn the propriettr. Be sides these two accidents , Mr. Bbkoaly'a barn was movtd from its foundation , and another barn adjacent was nearly demolished. Throughout the whole northern part of the city more or loss damage was done to fencessheds and outbuildings. The force of the wind was beyond comparison. At one point , in a single yard , the trees at opposite corners were bent almost to the ground in dif ferent directions At Council Bluffs and the transfer the force of the storm wai felt , though in a somewhat less degree. The wind tore off the tin roof of-the pottoffice arid linded it in the middle of Broad way. At the transfer empty cars were overturned in every direction , a pc r- tion of the depot sheds wai blown off and perfect havoc played with the telegr.iph lines bstwoon the bridge and tha transfer , so that up to 12 o'clock to-day only one wire was work ing batween Chicago and this city. Wo have to note the first importa tion into Omaha of tooth-brushes , Kuhn & Co. having had a large as sortment of brushes made to order in London. Every brush is warranted. Office , ot three rooms with constant supply of soft water , to rent , in the Cruickshank block. m21oodtf An Incident of the War. The Wahoo braves were taking a last fond farewell of mothers , and sweethearts. A gallant youth , the flower of a family , was engaged in the unpleasant task of tearing himself from the hysterical clasp of his darling. "Oh , Georgie , " the maiden sobbed , "do net leave me , you will get killed or get lost in Omaha and my heart will ba broken forever. " But tha no- b'c lad drew himself up proudly and gazed on his uniform of blue , and while ho wiped a tear of tobrcco julre from his chin ho said : "Sarah Jane , my country calls. I am aware of the dangers I am about to face , but the Hodges were over first in love and war , especially lovs , and ho stooped to kiss the tear from Sarah Jane's nose. She held his curly head upon her boiom and whispered : "Georgie , 1 have a terrible presenti ment" "Well , you'd better go home and have your folks do something for it , " cried Georgie , as ho dived into the moving train. A postal card , dropped from the seat of war to M ry Jane , read : DEAB MAEY JAUE : We have jiwt arrived and are eager for action.
