All wett well until the p&rty vrero about twelve miles beyond O'Fallea's U'uff when , on the 18th day cf November , i 1863 , a severe snow storm came en , aud the cattle were al ! scattered and lost. After a long and tedious search they wera recovered , and the train placed into winter qua t tars , and Sam prepared to return home. He fell in with a young man named Tom Smith , from Watertown , Wis , who was returning - turning home. Smith bed a span , of mules , a pole buggy , and waa leading an old gray horse , which he prized as a sort of family relic. Sam Tate and Smith clubbed together , and the teamsters , seven in number , rode in a large wugon , drawn by a mule team. They proceeded on their route , when , on the 30th of December , they found themselves at the junction of the Platte , or what is known astho thirty- two-mile divide. Tate and Smith lere agreed to drive on ahead ot the party , and have supper prepared at Alillspaugh's rancho. It was a beau tiful day when they started , but soon a Enow storm set in and kept increas ing In violence and fury until it was absolutely imposcible for them to pro ceed any further. The snow had ob literated all traces of a road on the smooth level prairie and there were no land marks to guide the party. From every rjireclion came the blinding snow , and the belated travelers were compelled to come to a stand-still. All night long they sat still in the buggy , and such a night as they put in , words fail to describe. December 31st dawned with no abatement in the storm and the cold and tired travelers eaw no evrers from _ their unpleasant situat'or * . Tate was positive that they had pissed the ranche and he advised a turn back , which they at tempted , but before they had driven 100 yards the fury of the storm caused 'another stop. Hera they were obliged to remain all day and all night. No fyod , no drink , and a blinding snow storm mr.de the unfortunate mortals as miserable as could be imagined. Smith now began to freeze , and a1 ! of Tale's exertions wera necessary to tave his life. The exercises necessary to do this gave him renewed strength and was undoubtedly the means of taving his own life. Smith had on tight boots , and they werefrczen solid to hii foot and up neaily to his knees. After this second night of agony , new year's day , 1864 , dawned bright and clear on the most beautiful sight ; stretched for miles on every side lay the broad expanse of snow , glittering like diamonds in the sunlight. Smith was now almost , if net actually help less. Taking the blankets and oil cloths , Tate cut the harness from the mules , took the old gray hone and making a saddle of a buffalo robe , he placed Tom on the gray horse aud lashed him fast. They then started for the ranch , walking on top of the hard surface oi snow , and so difficult was the traveling that although the distance was but six nrilea , the entire day was consumed in tte journey. About sun-down the grandest eight of Sam Tate's lifo broke on the vision. Before him was the little leg cabin with the white tmoke rolling from the chimney. Millspaugh and his wife and son done everything in their power for the famished frocm unfor tunates. All night long they worked with poor Smith ; his feet and lower extremities wore frozen , and when bathed became a mass of putrid flesh. Fhe supper , Sam says , was good , but 10 was not hungry , only taking a ilice of ham , a buscuit and a cup of offeo ; but about midnight he becaino aveuously hungry and devoured ivory thing he could reach. The party emained sometime at the ranche and inally came on to this city. Poor Pom lived to die in his bed at the Gin- innati Housa , the day after his ar- ival. W. E. Hill , Esq. , telegraphed > o Smith's relatives , and a man named Skinner was sent here and took home ho remains , and also the "old gray icrsa" to Watertown. Some timeafterward , Smith's rela- ives sent a number of remembrants o Tate with their hearty thinki for is brave' action in sticking so close 0 their dying boy. As a further vidence of the severity of the storm nd the miraculous escape of Tate , it only necessary to add that of the even teamsters who camped out in hat storm one froze to death , another ied of lock jaw at Salt creek , one at 'lattsmouth , and three lost their 3et after reaching home , so that out f the nine men who formed that un- ortunateband the landlord of the } rand Central was the only oae who scaped unscratched ; for which he is ievoutly thankful , and he hopes D lever to have another such close call.p 0 An Exciting whole Hunt. „ ( a in Luis Oblspo ( Ci L ) Tribune. In Muddy Fork township , Howard coun ty , one day last week , Sarah Stokes , a girl aged eighteen , stabbed and in stantly killed Linda Stephen ? , aged twenty daughter of W. P. Siephocs , a magistrate. The two familiesaro respectable - , spectable and res-do on sdjoining farms. They have been no'ghbors and friends for many years. Some imfru- dent'tondtict of an elder sister of the murdered girl had been tat.'led cbout by Sarah , and retaliatory criticisms upon her own conduct coming to the ears of the latter , Sarah , accompan ied by a married sistfd sister rode up to Sephens' gate and engaged in an angry controversy with the mother of the offending Stephens' girl , during which she called Sirs. Stephens a liar. Linda , another daughter , the offender being absent , took up the quarrel in behalf of her mother , and went to the gate. A few hot works then passed betwean the two girls , and Lnda climbed over the low fencj which separated them. As she did so ftlha Stokes drew from her riding sViit a long knife , end jumping from her horse dealt Miss Stephens a heavy blow in the neck. The point of the knife outering jusl above the cellar tone aud passing downward severed the carotid artery , jugular vain and windpipe , producing instant death. Miss Stokes then remounted her her Jo and started homo. As she pased the field where Mr. Stephens was ploughing she called to him and told him she had killed his daugh ter. Stephens attempted to arrest her , but her father , who was at work in an adjacent field , prevented Steph ens from touching her. Being in formed of what had happened Stokes told Stephens to take her into cus tody if he desired. Meantime the girl rode homo. An inquest was held on the body of the dead girl , result ing in a verdict of death at the hands of Sarah Stoke ; . The murderess made no attempt to escape , and is now undergoing preliminary examination The deface a claim that Mia-i Stephens had a largo stone in her hand when she got over the fence , and that Miss Stokes only acted in Eelf-defence. It is claimed by the prosecution that she went around to Stephens' house for the express purposa of killing the sister of the deceased , with whom she waa at enmity. Fortunately for her she happened to be absent on the morning of the killing. It is well known that a relationship ex- t Ir.ts between piles , constipation , kidney diseases and liver trouble ? .
