WHKK AND HOW IT WAS LOCATED Iff- TEBE3TINO HISTORY. St , Louis Republican. Fifty-three years since , on the 20th of May , 1827 , Fort Leavenworth was first marked out and occupied by the T7nlted SUtes troops. At that date the western line of the ttate of. .Mis- eouri commenced at latitude 36'deg. 30 nun. _ near the northwestern cor ner of Arkantai { erritory , and ran north , parsingthrongh the S5outh of the Kansas river to the line of Iowa territory , at the present northwest corner of Worth county , Missouri. The present six counties of Flatte , Buchanan , Andrew , Hodway , Holt andAtclrson iaiilissonsi , known as the Platte purchase or reservation , was claimed by the Iowa tribe of In dians , and by them ceded to the gov ernment by treaty in J82G , and in 1836 it was added to the State of Missouri by act of congress. - By order of the war department made in 1827Col. Leavenwortb-was instructed to take four companies of troops and ascend the Missouri Driver and build a cantonment on the west side of the river 40 miles .from the month of the Kansas to t > o located within the vicinity of the Haw Indians. In purauance of this order on the 17th day of April , 1827 , parts of four com panies consisting of 204 men and commanded respectively by Captain B elknap , ( father of'Gen. Belknap ) , JSeuts. Wheeler , Babbitt and Hunt , left Jefferson barracks below St. Louis in three keel boats and on the 16th of May reached and encamped at the present site of Parkville to await the arrival of Col. Leavenwortb , who waste to locate the can tenement. He ar rived on the 19th , and on the 20th he took Corporals Wilkeraon Ellis and Private Shep Brock in i skiff and rowed to the landing , a' ' what was then called Battlesuaki bills. Here the party scrambled on the top of the bluff through the thick undergrowth and admired the pros pect from the plateau. Col. Leaven worth walked up upon a leaning tre and told Corporal Ellis to blaze a Urge oak as the site of the camp. He then said : "Men , I am going to locate a poithere and call it after your colonel what do you think of it ? " They an' jwered : "It is a good name. " Sup per was then cooked , and the next day the troops were ordered up , and the work commenced in earnest to. clear sff the tite for the cantonment II iaa found that the place had been properly named previously , for on the irst day's work the mon killed one mndred and twenty rattlesnakes , and tome of the men doubted if it was a good day for snakes , as beieg too early n tbo season. There was originally reserved for ; he use of the government 3000 acres > f land on each side of the river , or iOOO acres from the month of Salt ireok above the fort to the present ipper boundary of the city of Leaven rorth on the Kansas side , and from he mouth of the creek at Bialto to he head of the island opposite the : ity of Leavenworth on the Missouri ide , then the mouth of Bee- creek , " rhich now enters the river three niles above. Tha Missouri reserva- ion was reduced a few yean after rard to a few hundred acres opposite he fort. In 1828 the Pottawattamie tribe of ndians , or rather a portion of that ribe , from Indiana located in the 5atto ] purchato and remained u&til 837 , when they were removed tq Council Bluffs , in what ii now Potta- rattamio county , Iowa , from whence hey were afterwards removed to the alley of the Kanoas river , a short [ istance above Topeka. In 1832 the hiefa of the Dclawares were sent west 0 look for a location to exchange for heir lands in northern Ohio and In iana , and were shown and offered a -art - of the Platte purchase , but pre- erred the lands at the mouth of the Kansas , with an outlet running two iundred miles west for the purdoao of unting. Perhaps the sole survivor of the lo- ation of Fort Leavenwortb , Corporal 'homas X Ellis , now resident at Wea- on , enjoying a hale old age and the ounty of his government. He is an ihioan , and in boyhood way a neigh- or of the father of President Hayes , [ o enlisted at Newport barracks in [ entucky , in the Third regiment in- mtrf in 1826 , and served four enliit- lents , being discharged in the city of lexico in 1848 ; served under Taylor , 'wiggs ' , Gainei , Patterson , Harney , ad Kcott ; was in the Black Hawk , 'lorida ' and Mexican wan , and at the attics of Resaca , Palo Alto and Mon- : rey , with old Bough and Beadyand 1 Carro Gordo , National Bridge and ily of Mexico , and was an eye-wit- ess of the capture of La Yega by orporal Sullivan and Lieut. Col. [ ay. During the Mexican war Foit eavenworth was the outfitting point ir the command of Gen. Kearney id the regiments of Cols. Donlphan id Price , and the Mormon battalion L 1846 , and continued the frontier 331 from whence troops and supplies ere forwarded westward until after te settlement of Kansas. It waa for ore than twenty yean one of the oat important frontier stations , as : ing the gateway to the west and the acific. Most of the officers of the d army have , at some time or other , : en stationed there , including Jeffer- in , and the old sutler's store ; the east front has often laounded to the joyous laugh of Jeb. tewait or the mad pranks of "Shank" vans. It was here that CoL Fre- .ont was confined for some days hen returning from California in 547 , under arrest by order of Gen. iearney for insubordination , and hich rssulted in the famous court artial of that officer in Washington , i 1848 , and it was for this reason tat Col. Benton , then a senator from [ iEsouri , upon visiting the foit in 349 , . on business , -refused to eat icre , but returnee to Weston , say- ig , "I will not taste salt in a govern- .ent garrison where a patriot and 2ro has been ignominiously and pur- 3sely degraded. " From 1827 , to the cottlement of Beaten in 1838 , the nearest , point of vilization was at Liberty , then an uportant frontier town , and it wai te point at which the officers went for icreation , and many happy alliances ere the result of this intercourse. t that time an arsenal wai established : Liberty Landing for the storage of ms and ammunition in a place of ifety , and the repair of those domed - ; ed by use , where it remained until } 61 , when it was captured by the mfederatei , and ita arms , oannon id ammunition furnished the South * n army with much of the material sod by them in the battle of Wilson's reek. The arsenal was than removed i Leavenworth , where it is now a rge establishment. The government military prison ii cated here and haa connected with it large force , grounds and buildings , he Nez Percea , with Chief Joseph , ere confined here ( but only under md ) for about syear , in 1877-8 he re being removed to the Indian ter- tory. Chief Douglas , of the Plea , ia now L close confinement here , together ith a large number of deserters and .her military.offenders. The site of ie fort is one of the most beautiful i the Missouri river , and is embel- ihed with great taste and beauty. ho fifty-three yean since ita location ive made changes in it and the coun- y as magical as ever Sid the .wand ; the magician. She Floored flerselt Extract from 8 woman's testimony in the trial of her husband for abusing her : "He struck me in the face. I did not say anything to him , but I gave him a good talking to. " The attorney scratched his chin a moment , and asked her if she would please repeat her statement. "I say he struck me. I didn't say anything to him , but I gave him a good talking to. " Again the attorney scratched his chin , but finally told the woman to go on and tell what else happened. "That same ofternoon tie sbruck me again , and I can stand a great deal , and I didn't say a word to him , but I give him a good talking to. " Theattorney thought long and deep ly , and then asked : "Did he strike you the third time ? " 'Tea , sir , he did. " "Did you say anything to him ! " "No , sir. " "But perhaps you gave him a good talking to ? " E"You can just bet your life I did. " The lawyer began -to scratch his chin again , but the judge dismissed the case. " The Zoological Drama. Sensational realism on the stage is advancing step by step before the footlights , and the other night in Philadelphia , it came near bounding out into the audience , but happily the people did not know it in time to bo sensationally thrilled. Mr. Frank Frayno and combination are giving a play at the Netv National theatre , in which a lion figures. In the play , Frayno is accused of a crime , and as serts that he can prove his innocence by a scrap of writing which is con cealed in a lion's leathern collar. He approaches an apparently unfast ened lion on the stage and takes out the paper after wich the curtain falls on the act pic ture producing the required sensation. Now Frayne'a dog Jack , well known to audiences as ono of the actors in "Si Slocum , " was left out of the cast of the new piece and the lion , Nero , was substituted as the zoological feature. Jack was doubtless professionally jealous of his royal highness , Nero , and prowled around uneasily behind the acanes , taking a keen interest in the lion act. The na tive American mastiff wasjihelved and the foreigner was the reigning favor ite. Jack could not be blamed for making a dash the other nightat Nero's cage after he had done his act and been locked up. The lion got fu rious at the dcg's impertinence , and in his royal rage broke one of the bars of his cage and then another , while a third broken bar would have set him free to roam around , roaring , seeking prhom he might devour. The , dog itood his ground nobly , but the act- > rs , where were they ? Some flow to ; he "flies , " and some shot out into ; he street in their stage attire , and if he audience had only had a hint of a ooselion , what a rough-and-tumble icatteration there would have been in rout. But Nero was secured by his : eeper and Jack still lives , and no- iody was hurt. The zoological drama a gaining ground. Where Booth Is Burled. The fWaahington correspondent of Che Buffalo Commercial writes : It vas only after some patient inquiry hat I could ascertain the facts , which , ro interesting , and so far as I know ire yet unpublished. Booth died , as rill be remembered , In a barn in Ma- yland from a wound received from he musket of Boston Corbett. His > ody was brought to Washington , and ifterhavingbeenidentifiedbythocourt nartial before which his fellow-oonspi- ators were tried , wasdissected by the urgeon general of the army. The train and heart and some other parti if the body were preserved in alcohol , , nd are now on exhibition in the nedical muaeum of the surgeon gen- ral's office. The building in which he assassination occurred was Ford's heater. The government confiscated t , but afterward Ford was paid its ull value , and it has since been used a the headquarters of the medical orps of the army. * The bram and .eart of Booth are in jars , standing i a case that ia situated very near ho actual scene of the assassination. After the surgeon had done with tooth's body , it was buried in a grave i the arsenal grounds. Only half a ozen persons knew the exact spot , hich was unmarked. In 1867 Ed- in Booth , the actor , sent Mr. leaver , the sexton of Christ's church , ialtimore , to Washington , to request lat the remains of his brother might e taken up and removed to the imily burial place. After some de- y the request was granted by Presi- ant Johnson , who was finally ap- aaled to , and Mr. Weaver took ; the ody to the cemetery iu Baltimore id bnried it beside the cider Booth id others of the family. The remov- 1 was conducted with great secrecy , id waa concealed from Secretary tanton , who had refused to give his msent.
