An Old Family Tradition of the < * Mission Dolores. A Discharged Convict and Fire Friends , Folly Armed , on a Midnight Search for Gold , Sliver and Diamonds. Baa Francisco CSatt. Sept. 23. A violent tugging at the jingle bell connected with the Seventeeth street police station , at five o'clock jester ; day morning , attracted the attention of Corporal Haggerty and Officer W. F. Burke , who were quietly awaiting the arrival of the relief. The ponderous derous fine door was swung open , and the officers saw standing on the walk a woman , pale , trembling , and scarce ly able to speak. She was invited to take a seat , and when she had suffi ciently recovered to answer questions , she stated that her name is Peters ; is the owner of a milk ranch in .South San Francisco , and has a milk route at the Mission ; that aa she was passing down Sixteenth street she received in formation that a number of men had dug up the ground in a vacant lot on that street- had taken up an iron safe containing § 35,000 and carried it off. She cdJcd ± hc this money had been buried there by the father of an old Oaiifornian , who is now in the Insane. Asylum at Stockton. WHAT WAS LEARNED. The Call's criminal news detective , ' who was summoned by the telephone , yisited the locality at once to make an investigation , and discovered several holes and two trenches on a vacant lot on the north side cf Sixteenth street , between Guerrero and Dolores. He also learned that in the early days of Oalifotnia , when San Francisco was known as Yerba Buena , the old Gait- fornians , including the Valencia , Guarrero and Sanchez families , lived at the old Mission Dolores , in old- fashioned adobe houses , several of : which have withstood the ravages of time for over one hundred years , and are still to be seen. Along both lines of Sixteenth street , from Dolores itreet east as far as Valencia , were a number of these structures , built of sunbakedbrick , and on the north t lines of that street were two occupied by the Sanchez family , one of the richest of the Mission. When the > Americans took possession of this ; State when Yerba Buena was shanged to San Francisco , and whnn ut the discovery of gold ; Drought thousands to the State a jreat change took place at theTTHii- lion. Many of the old dwellings prare altered to suit modern ideas , ind some were taken down altogether , to make way for frame structure * , imong those that vrero levelled were hoe owned by the Sanchez family. ON TJIE SITE f one was put up a domodiona two- itory house. The other was taken lown in part , a frame front was erect- id and a shingle roof took the place f the old red tile one that had done lervice for many years. This house itood directly opposite an old adobe , 'ormerlv the adobe of a priest , which iUbiequently became a place of public esort known as "La Rigolette. The rest wall of the partly demolished Sanchez building was immediately op- i xisita a pear tree which grew in the ear of the priest's house and which . ras planted one hundred and three rears ago. After the death of the surrently reported that he had buried la n his grounds a large iron chest filled lacl irith Spanish doubloons , silver dollars ind jewels of untold value. After * safe he old adobea had b < * en taken down fo md altered it was whispered that old lo nan Sanchez arose every night from lom lis grave to watch over his buried it : ; treasures. of f The precise spot where the gold , illver , diamonds and rubies are , was mown by a young member of the wi 'amily , who had recieved the secret , widt fith the understanding that he should dt lot dig for it until he had attained a dtd. itated age. Before he reached that d.is i ige isda dam HE WAS MOKTAU.T WOU27DED , m ind before dying , confined the secret tviw a younger brother , imposing upon tvihs < lim the same injunction that had hs een laid upon himself. One night iffm ; he younger brotherwhile in his cups , m livulged the secret. After that he f.idi > rent into the mountains of Monterey didt ounty and was never heard of more. dt Che secret was let out about twenty- lal Lve yean ago , but the party who ac- ar uired it never derived any benefit rom it , either from a fear to under- ake the search or an imperfect know- edge of the hiding-place. About fif- een years ago , an old resident of this ity , and for nearly thirty years in- m labltant of the Mission , had occasion toAi Ai o visit the State Penitentiary , and Aiye here met a native Californian , who yebl bl ras under sentence for horse-stealing , blSI rho told him about the .hidden trea- m SI iure , and gave him , as nearly as SIof I xusible , the locality where it way re- th iresented to have been planted. Up- is in : his return to this city , ke > INSTITUTED A SEARCH n the vicinity of Sixteenth and Do- end ores streets. After turning over sev- onhe iral acres of ground without finding in nything of value , he gave up the inW earch. They continued m their labors until two i o'clock in { ha morning , when they left , ab enting themselves for an i hoar. At Ihe end of that time they returned , accompanied by another 1 man , and. the trio then went" to work. The men , wno _ were all armed with revolvers aud knives , prosecuted their work by , ' the.aid of a bull's-eye lantern , and continued . until _ five. o'clock. Once in a while'when they ' were at work _ 'the sound of an ap- ' preaching vehicle caused them to retire - tire and hide themselves under the shadow of a fence , and another" time the sound of footsteps on ttie side- "walk caused them to retire into se clusion again. After they had taken their departure , the lady and other inmates of'the house visited the lot , and found that an excavation about five feet deep.and three feet square had been made. During the.day- Thursday two men , whoso appearance indicated that they are California In dians , visited the lot , and , after sur veying it for some time , took a long airing and made measurements with it from the direction of the building opposite , in the rear of which is THE OLD PEAK TREE. They made a tracing on the ground , then took another measurement , the last crossing the first. Whese the two lines crossed tney placed a rock as a monument , and went away. Upon examination , it was discovered that the stone had been placed at a point whish would correspond with what was the inner angle of the. northwest corner oflthe old adobe wall as near as the old" residents can judge. The story as told by the lady , and the sub sequent action of the men , aroused the curiosity of the neighbors , who set a watch from secluded places. At nine o'clock that night , six men , ap parently all California Indians or Mexicans , went to work on the lot and dug in an easterly in and a southerly direction from the stone monument , making trenches several feet wide and deep. They worked uninterruptedly until three o'clock , when they ceased and left , carrying tools with them. Whether they found anything is un known , but at daylight one of the cu rious neighbors discovered a card pinned to a stake. On it was written in pencil : "We have found$43,000 buried here. May God be praised. " The matter was reported at police headquarters , and detectives were set to work upon it. The police theory is that some years ago thieves "planted" itolen property in the lot , and after serving out their time in San Quentin , went to look for it. Make The Best. There is nothing that better shows the importance of putting care and skill ( brains ) into ones effort to supply the market than does a little study of the quotations of butter. Tha lowest grade in New York market is quoted it five cents , the highest at twenty- two. There are twenty-four varieties mentioned , and the number of pack- ; jes for the week is set down at 33- 338. Western factory ranges from 6 to 12 cents ; Western dairy from 8 to 14 cents ; Western imitation creamery rom 12 to 15 cents ; Western creamery ill sorts , from 10 to 22 cents. This list of prices is full of matter ( m which every producer should most jrofoundly reflect. But the list does lot tell the whole story. Back of his ] lies the significant /act that the ' ligher grades are in such supply that ill that is offered sells promptly at the est quotations , while the lower rades are not taken so promptly , de- eriorate in the hands , of the sailer. uil are Boon lorced into st'll.lower rades , entailing losses on all that lava any interest in the goods. Even teyond all thh there are grades which re never quoted , which go into the lands of fastidious purchasers right rom the hands of the makers often iringing 100 per cent , above the high- st quotations. In such cases more is laid for the quality of brains used ban for all other nortions of the pro- luct. luct. But But while this is more fully shown u the butter market than in that of aany other products , it is found in aany other things. The highest quota- ions in begs and cattle do not really how the best figures obtained. Very hoice lota are taken on private terms , rhich if made public would cause lany inquiries to be mada of com- lission men by their principals. It hard for many to realize that any ne else sends bettor goods to market. .nd even on so common a matter as it pigs , there is Edward Burnett , oE outhboro , Mass. , who gets twice as mch for his choice porkers , and his ird , aa can be obtained by any one Ise. Ise.It It is with pride that we note the de of the finest Iowa tuba of butter li r the city trade. The grades next wer go to England , and the German " tarket absorbs those of medium qual- ' y.
