HE VERMONT DEVICE OF MASTER SAW-
YEK TO CU11E A HAD HABIT ,
'evr York Tunes.
In Korthern Vermont that peculiar
arm of a social outrage formerly ,
iiown na a "surprise party , " but of
ite commonly called a " .Bulgarian
trocity , ' . ' is still lamentably frequent.
> n a cold evening Rev. Sir. Sawyer
nd. his family were seated " quietly by
'icir social hearth , ' " "enjoying one
oothcr's society. The clcrgymin :
jading aloud the bishop's pastoral
itter ; his wife was busy calculating
ow to cut up her husband's qld'over-
sat BO as to supply liim with"a new
aistcoat , herself with a new over-
f irt , and Master Sawyer with a ne\v <
air of trousers , while that excellent
nail boy was reading the im-
roved adventures of an eminent Co
irate , and -wondering * whether he Coof
puld bo able te emulate them. Not of :
no of the family was prepared to re- ofU

eivevisitors. Mr. Sawyer had on his
ressing gown and slippers ; Mrs. Saw- 8
er hamlet down her back hair to give tl
;
rcedom to her mental processes , and fo
- had temporarily slipped >

ff his trousers to suppty his mother Pire
rith a pattern , while she wrapped the re
earth-rugabout him. Suddenly , and rect
rithout the least wattling , more than cthi
Dur dozen .people of all kinds and
exes , including men , women , reform-
rs , and theological students burst in- inT :
o the room , carrying cake and devaa-
fo >
ition with them. Master Sawyer fled il
.pwling ; the clergyman pushed back ilhi
is spectacles , and tried to smile a
hastly smile ; and his heroic wife ,
y hurriedly twisting her hair back
rith both liands , and holding her comb
'ctwecu her teeth managed to avoid
itering the welcome which the invad- sny
rs expected , but which her conscience sntc
orbade her to express.
tcy
The marauders conducted themselves y <
fter the usual custom of their kind. ai
le
! hey conversed with one another with leT
rcat hilarity , ignoring the sufferings tl
f the clergyman and his wife. They tl :
pread their cake upon the table , and
.ovouring it without plates , scattered
he crumbs over the new carpet. One
oung man having laid a large piece ot
cake the sofa sat
elly on , subseqoently of
[ own upon it. After having reduced ofc :
he furniture to that state of grease 'tt
hat jt was no longer safe to sit down , p
he miscreants gathered around the-
lianoaudsang , "What shall the Harj
est Bol ! * untilMr. Sa vyer , mild as ho fr
ras , regretted that he could not tak'e frtl
L scythe and reap ah immediate and tl
iloody harvest. tlni
While these blood-curdling outrages nidi
rcro in progress in the -parlor , the
; oed small boy kept himself carefnlly
iut of the room. He was not , how-
ver , wasting his time in idle rage.
le , too , heard the , melodious inquir
es as to the harvest , and remarked to
limsclf that they would find out all
, bout the harvest if they would ouly
rait a few minutes. Meanwhile , he
ras busily engaged carrying pails of
vater and emptying them on the front
itep and along the walk leading from
he front door to the gate. The night
vas cold and the water froze rapidly.
Under his admirable management the
cp acquired an unusually smooth and
ilippery character , and when the work
.vas thoroughly done the small boy re-
ircd to the second story front window
uid waited for the surprise party to
break up.
The moon was at the full , and shone
arightly when the first pair of mis-
: rcants the young man who sat down
an the jelly-cako and a heavy young
lady to whom ho was afllanccd issued
from the front door , and instantly sat
iown with tremendous emphasis.
Close behind them came the raiders ,
ivho with one accord strewed them
selves over the ground , until in some
places they were collected three or
[ our deep. The shrieks of the ladies
md the stronger remarks of the men
SUed the air. No sooner would a
struggling wretch regain his feet than
he would sit down "with renewed
riolence. The affrighted clergyman
and his wife gazed with wonder at (
the appalling spectacle , and the good ( |
small boy never ceased to sing "What
\
„ - .
Shall the Harvest Be ! " at the top of
his lungs interspersing that stirring
hymn with.a wild "whoop".whenever
a particularly brilliant pair of stockings
waved in the air.
Although only three persons sus
tained fatal injuries , there was scarce
ly a member of the party ivho escaped
without more or less serious wounds ,
either of body or clothing. It is gen
erally believed that there will never
be another surprise in Brookfield , and
it is under contemplation among mid
dle-aged householders to present Mas
ter Sawyer with a service of marbles
and a life membership in the Poreign
Missionary Society , as a testimonial
for tleir esteem and gratitude.
Grain Covers.
Prairie Fanner.
Wo think no one thing is more
needed on tire farm than good sub
stantial covers for both hay and grain
stacks. They are easily and cheaply
made of stout factory cloth of the
requisite size , and being tightly
stretched over the hay , when roughly
stacked with the hay-fork , will save it
perfectly from showers , or even pretty
.extended rains. ' As the hands follow
"to retop the stacks and finish all se
cure , the covers are removed to other
stacks , and thus do duty during the
whole season. So with grain. A cover
in catching weather will pay for itself
sometimes in saving a single stack from
serious damage. They may also be
used at any time in protecting loads of
hay when being moved , and for a va
riety of uses about the farm.
Wo lately saw specimens of clotk of
various kinds , coated with anew prep
aration , not yet , however , offered for
sale , jt is very light , entirely plia
ble , said not to crack either from heater
or cold , costs only about one-half that
of India Tubber cloth , and is adapted
to coating any pliable material , even
[ > aper ; and rendering it entirely water
proof. If it prove all it would "seem
to promise , wo may have something
more to say about it. In ihe mean
time farmers must still continue'to de
pend upon the muslin or canvass cov-
3rs as heretofore.
In England , caps squares of cotton
) loth are almost universally used for
protecting cocks of .hay and shocks of
jrain. ' In the eastern States , although
in no't bo universal use , they are there
juito common. In the West , tlfo
ibundance aud low price of hayj and
: he general drynessof the climate dur-
ng hayingand harvesting , has seemed
o prevent their use. Where much
ilover hay is made , thyre is no doubt
hey may be economically applied , es-
wuially on dairy farms. This , however ,
svery farmer must decide for himself.
L'hey do nut yet constitute part of the
ndispcnsuble implements in hay-mak-
ng. These should be put in complete
irder , that when haying fairly com-
nenccs there need be no drawback to
ontinuous work , and the crop may bo
ent to the stack or barn in the best
ondition.
The Petroleum Trade.
The trade of Philadelphia in potro-
jum has increased each.month of the
urrent year , although the total for
he live months is less than for the
amc period in JLS7T , while the busi-
ie.ss shows a largo increase over 1875
nd 1870. The prospects are favor-
bio to a continued improvement ,
'rom January 1 to June 7 , of 1878 ,
lie exports from Philadelphia were
4,708,010 gallons ; for thosameperiod
11877,17,55a,149'gallons. . The to
il cmprts of the United States from
anuary 1 to May 31,1878 , were 88-
07,703 gallons ; for 1878 , 113,072-
So gallons ; 1870 , SOJ39,741 : gallons ;
875 , 74,091,022 gallons. The large&t
mount exported to .my one port is
3.750,372 gallons to Bremen , from
"ew York and Philadelphia for the
ve months named. Philadelphia
jut to Antwerp during the snme time , I :
,310,043 * gallons. The exports to
ntwerp from New York were 4,340-
} 2 gallons ; to China and Japan ,

Transportation of Dressed Meats.
-The refrigerator car Philadelphia ,
: the Anderson Refrigerator Line of
hicago , containing dressed beef for
ic Philadelpliia market , arrh ed in
hiladelphia on Wednesday , having Cl
iado the run from Chicago in a little
rcr sixty-four hours. The car came
om Chicago over the Lake Shore and
< jnnsylvania railroads , and is the
lird dispatched under an arrange
ment for the rapid transportation of
rcssed beef from the west to Phila-
clphia. The managers of this enter-
rise claim thai .1 great saving can bo
il'ectcd by thusjshipping cattle , sheep ,
ic. , in dresscdforrrt instcad of on the
oof. In.proof they cite the facts
iat in 1870 there were handled at
10 Chicago stock yards over 01,000
irs of stock cattle , Which , with a
lirinkago of § 50 a car an acknowl-
3ged loss on a run of 700 miles
rould bo over § 3,000,000. To bring
liese cattle to Philadelphia , they
rould in proportion lose sinhrinkago
lone over § 0,000,000 in one year by
eing transported on the hoof.
To add to this must be the feed at
ho several stations , the pay of the
rovers , the loss by death , and other
iicidcutal expenses all of which , at
low estimate , would swell the loss
y the annual transportation of 60,000
ars of cattle , 1,400 miles alive , about
7,712,000. If to this is added the
uss by shrinkage , etc. , on hogs and
heep , a total loss of over 810,000,000
imually on the cattle , sheep and hogs
landled in Chi-ago alone in the year
.870 , is estimated. American Ex.
