The election of Chief Engineer of the Omaha Fire Department takes place on the cecond Wednesday of April , and already there are numer ous candidates in the field. The usual manner of election is for the companies to nominate .their csndl- d.Ues at preliminary meetings , aud then at a meeting of the whole de partment an election takes place. The man thus selected by the fire department is then appointed to the office by the City Council , who thus confirm the firemen's choice. The Pioneer Hook ; aud Lauder Company and Engine Company No. 1 held meetings last night for he purpose of nominating candi dates ; aud engine companies JSos. 2 and 3 hold similar meetings to night. Among the names mentioned for his office are John Cane , of No. 1 ; 8. jN. Mealio , .No. 3 ; Harry Tagger and B. Shannon , No. 2 ; George Godfrey.of the "Hooks , " aud Frank Kleflner , the present chief. Wo understand that the content is likely o bo between Godfrey and Kleffnur. Tiie salary ia only $303 ; if it were more , there would , no doubt , be a greater number of candidates. KAIL FACTORY. The Contemplated Eulcriiriso be Brought Before the Board of Trntlo To.Nlght. At the meeting of the Board of Trade to-night the subject of build- us and operating a nail factory in Omaha will ba laid before the Board. We are thoroughly convinced that nulls cat , be made here or at some point on the Missouri river , out of old rails and scrap iron ( of which we have an abundant supply at our door ) 25 cautb leas cost per keg than they can bo made in Pitlsburg , Whoelmsr , or oven St. Loui ? , and transportation to Omaha added. This is a guarantee of 5 percent , profit per annum on the entire investment ; even should furnaces at those points operate their milla and sell at cost , which they are not like ly to do very long. They tried it last summer'aud the result was an advance of thirty cents per keg lately , and for many reasous nails are likely tti further advance. And we are further eati&fied that had Mr. Bayuon put this enterprise in the same light lost spring as it ia pressured to-day , we would have had a nail factory iu successful ope ration at this time. a Ax * fa li. Iiro Colored Women Have a Qnarrel , and One Shoots at the Other. Yesterday two colored women , named Mrs. Cornish and Mrs. Thomas , living on Tenth street , between Dodge and'Capital avenue , had very lively altercation. It seems that Mis. Thomas went to the house of Mrs. Cornish to ask her to KO with her to a neighbor to explain away some gossipy tales , which Mra.Thomas claimedMrs.Cor- nish had Deen circulating about her. The two women had tome words , about the matter , which finally re sulted ina quarjel and a lifht. They clinched each other , ua in thescuffie Mru. Thomas managed to get the bolter of her opponent , whom she scratched and pounded. Mhe then'started to go out of the house when Mrs. Cornish grabbed up a "bull-dog" a five-shooting revolver which she snapped at the departing assailant , but it would not go off. A second time the weapon pen failed to fire , but after repeated eiloris on the part of Mrs. Corui&b. it finally went off , the ball passing through the shawl of Bird. Thomas , but did no injury to her. If it had struck her it would have gone clear through her , as the ball was a very large one. Mrs. Thomas' retreat was consid erably accelerated by the pistol shot. Mrs. Cornish came to the police court aud swore out a warrant against Mrs. Thomas fcr assault and battery. Mrs. Thomas will probably rnuko complaint against Mrs. Cornish for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. Mnrrleil. Mr. T. Walter Read aud Miss Matio JLiitzen were married la&t Monday at the Eighteenth Street M. E. Church , the Rev. P. C. John son officiating. The church was crowded , the congregation belnR seated by the uahora , Mr. Will Clark and Mr. Will Nash , who , however , could not find room for all who wished to witness the interesting ceremony. Many persona were unable to get into the church at nil , aud went away disappointed. At 8:15 : the bridal party entered the church , as follows : The bride and groom ; Mies Laura Reed , bridesmaid ; John Guild , grooms man ; Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Bush ruuu , Mr. ami Mrs. T , C. Brunuer , Mr. and Mrs. John Staley , and little - tlo Maud Staloy , daughter of the latter. As they marched up the aisle to the altar , Miss Adah Kennedy , who presided at the organ , played a wed ding march. Arriving at the altar , Rev. Mr. Johnson pronounced the happy couple man and wife. After the wedding a reception was held at the residence of Mr. W. M.
