The Establishment Will be Running in Six weeks. A Shot Manufactory Also Likely to be Boon Started. A BEE reporter yesterday morning paid ff visit to the Omaha White Lead Works owhcnme'u- ! tiou baa been previously made in this paper and found that rapid progress bad ben made in the en terprise during the last few weeks. The location of the works is in the vicinity of Twentieth street , juit south of the Union Pacific railroad track. A tide-track has been built to 'the establish ment. Tbe buildings ere now completed , with the exception of a tow finishing touches , and resdy for the machinery. There are three buildings , all connected , being m the shape of an JLi. Tne two wines are frame buildings resting ou brick foundations , while the corner build ing is entirely of brick. Thodimen- sions of the entire structure ore 120 by 180 feet. To the eouth , standing separate from the factory , is a very ueat frame office , 16 by 24 feet , which is being fi\ted up in good atyle The coat of the buildings is about 510,000 , and tne machinery will cost $10,000 , making an in vestment , exclusive of the ground of about ? 6POGO. The buildings are ready for the ma chinery , a part which has already arrived , and the rent is now on route from Baltimore. Tue bollera and engine are of the eamo power as those used in the amtoltiug Works Irom 70 to 100 horao power./They were made in Chicago. The works will be in complete running order inside of six weeks , under the management of Mr. S. E. Locke , who came here from Bal tirnore , where for many j eara pas ho haa been engaged in the manu facture of white loau. He Lad had for soui" time past an idea of coming to Ooinha to establish lead works here. He looked the Held over carefully , and ea\v that it was the bedt point in the country for euch a fictory , aa the raw material could bo obtained here , and thus save freight one way.Ho eaw that the competition in the Eust had run piices down to such an extent ihat ho iniM do Borcethinz in eclf defense. JLisad haa dropped Irorn 7 cents per pound to 3J and 4 within a yei'r past , and when a corroder had to p y freight on the raw ma terial /rom the West to the JEast , and Iho consumer in the West had to pay freight on it when it was Bout Dack m tne shape of white lead , the profits were too small , owing to the decline of the raw ma- teri'il. Mr. Locke accordingly came to Omaha last fall , and upon making aia business known he had no difficulty in organizing a stock company composed of William A. Paxton , president ; C. W. Mead , vice-president ; N. Shelton - ton , secretary and treasurer ; 8. E. Locke , manager , and Levi Carter ; whom the stock . - among v.-as en tirely taken and paid fo * . Mr. Locke , the practical man ot the company la one of the heaviest stockholders. He it was who saw the advantages of Urn aha forEuch a factory , and he engineered the enterprise from the start , and has personally superin tended the construction of the buildings. The company expect to secure the trade of the entire West. They can manufacture white lead , or , as it is more technically called , the carbon ate of lead , cheaper in4 Omaha than else vrhere , by reason of not having to pay frelgnt on the raw material , which is obtained from the Smelting Works , and thus they can , in sbif- ping their products t j the Ea&t , sayo freight one way , aid thus success fully compote with eastern corrod- ora. They propose to make the carbonate of lead dryer or in oil , and will sell it dry to tlo ; mixers , who mix it in oil , as mixing and corroding are two different branches of the trado. These works will employ about Forty men , ten ofwhom will be skilled hands , and who are already in the ground , having como bore from Baltimore , under contract tviUi Mr. Locke. The unskilled la- aorora will be procured in Omaha. A SHOT TOWER. It is very likely that a shot man- j factory will also be started in Oma- la at an early day , for the same eaeous that a white lead factory has jen established here , namely , 3maha can furnish the raw material , uid frek-bla one way can be saved. Jrr&lia ia regarded as the best loca- ; 5on for a-sbot tower in this country uitl although wo have not the mthrnty for making the statement , , -et we predict that within ono year * L&hot lowerwill be in operation here. L' e prooabilitles are that some if the gentlemen interested m the Works nnd White Lead , will bo the principal stock , loldera. It we remember rightly , Fay Uuuiil has oSereJ" to give , or nvear , f5OOD , or more , in such an interprif.o , but we thluk that it will te etarletl wHfout such aidfor there 9 no doubt of its being-a paying in. titutlon from the beginning , and lence Use stock vill find takera at louie without much trouble. It uanscs ( Inne.rth f Jolm Welcli On Tuesday ia jl a rather sinsula accident occurred at the Unioi "Pacino depot , the teault o which wa < s thb death of John Weld on Sunday. Among tlie west bound freight cars was one contain ing ten carboys of nitric acid for th < San Francisco mint , together will a lot of oils and other combustible material. Oae of the carboys o nitric acid exploded wbil < the car was standing at the depot , and ten men , employes ai the freight houce , were summoned to immediately empty the car of al the other freight in order to preveul further accident. Mr. Shelby , who know the char acter ot the acid , told the men tc hold their breath while in iho car , and to breathe freeh air every time they came out. They all heeded the caution except John "Welch , who probably forgot it. While he was in the car ho inhaled the fatal fumtSj and that eveuiug he was ta ken sick in consequence , and came very nearly dying before morning. Ho lingered till Sunday , when he died in considerable agony. The inhalation - halation of the nitric acid caused pneumonia of the very worst kind. The deceased had been in the em ploy of the Union Pacific railroad for over ten years , fle was a single msii , and was aged about 40 years. The funeral took place under the auspices of the Emmet Moiiu. raent Association yesterday. Since writiuc the above we learn that John Croft , another employe , bss been taken elck in consequence of the nitric acid accident.
