March 6th , I have been In receipt
of several letters from people living
In Iowa , Illinois , Ohio , Ac. , sever
al of which were from Chicago
statins that they say saw my letter
In the BEE , and mating further
and more numerous Inquiries into
tthft different advantages of this
-county for settlement by emigra
tion , as tney all eay there u a great
many thinking of coming out to set
tle m tbe westarid as many of them
never thins of sending a stamp , It Is
too expensive for mo to write and
famish the materials and time
to them ail individually , as I am no
paid agent , and write to try and in
duce some poor homeless , formless
person tocome.out , as I did myself
three years ago , and I am happy to
say tnat several have already come
and are coming ; so one don't know
what good a simple letter in a good
fe - paper may do.
* Crop prospects were never so good
as at present ; small grain is all up
and looking fine , and corn is being
planted , and every available piece
of tilable land will be planted , ai
there are no grasshopper eggs depos
ited in thla county to hurt the early
crops , and according to the prognos
tications of a good many tbe crops
will not suffer much in the fall , it
any , by ihe 'hoppers.
There is a great rush of emigra
tion comiuc in. Those few that left
last fall are coming back , and lots
more with them , and our county is
settling up fast. Hardly a day
/ passes but two or three families come
- - in , bringing their stock and agricul
tural implements with them , and all
seem well pleased with tne appea. "

and pre-emp ion ; plenty of good
water and timber for present usep ,
such as ash , box elder , elm , hlckoiy ,
oak , walnut aud cottonwood , with

for. The soil Is of a fine dark loam ,
from one to three feet deep , with a
good porous sub-soil mixed , and
great quantities of natural lime ,
which make it fine for wheat ana
corn. All grain and vegetables do
well here ; the soil never bakes
hard in the dryest time , and it
' will stand any drought well ; wild
fruits in abundance cherries ,
plums , grapes , currents , etc. Rail
road prospects are only a matter of
time ; the tirownvilla and Omaha
and Republican Valley railroad Is
trying to eee which will get the
lead. Claims are good , and Im
proved claims with timber and
water cs n be had cheap of old bach
elors who are tired of living the old
agony any longer. Stock does well
here out all winter and keep fat ,
only need ng a little hay in stormy
weather. We can plow every
month in the year. Our county
mills furnish a market lor wheat
and rye , and buy. nil * can rftloe ;
inireorn and oats ihe coming im
migration and our own hogs need ,
and all our eggs , butter , etc. , we
ship to the Black Hills orto Plum
Creek station on the Union Pacific
railroad 40 miles away.

Unnatural Conduct of Sterling ,
Who Was Hanged In Ohio
Saturday.
'The day of execution first Bet
by tt e court in December last was
March 23 , and all preparations were
being made by the authorities for
carrylns : out the order , when two
daya previous a reprieve came 'rom
Gov. Young. On that day the Gov
ernor received a visit at his office
from a woman who Introduced
, herself as Mrs. Sterling , of
Maxwell , Ontario , the mother
of the condemned man. She said
that she bad but a few days previous
Keardof bis conviction and the sen
tence of the court , aud wanted a
pardon , if possible , and ; if not , a
reprieve until she might Bee him in
person. The reprieve was granted ,
fend on tbo next day she arrived in
"Youngstown.and applied for admis B
sion to the jail Sue was at once
> received and went to the cell , but
when she attempted to rush to the
urns of her son a id embraoa him ,
be repelled her , and used Insulting
woids in denying a rtlitionship.
She Begged for a recognition ,
and after all the entreaties known
to human nature , otie waar'cdmpelled
to leave tbe jail without & single
ilnd word from him , and not even
thanks fur her kindness in getting
* his miserable life extended twenty-
four days. Onthe next day she
gain visited Us cell , but wl bout
ny better success. From first to
last be denied her , aud she finally
left the jail aud the oity , gem back
to her home au apparently broken
